Re: [MBZ] now S600
W140 chassis cars are very complex, probably the most complex cars of their time. Multiple independent systems that do all sorts of things, like soft close doors, control interior lighting, ACC, etc., etc. That being said, they’re not all that bad to work on. Since each system is independent of the others, when something like your soft close feature stops working, you’re not stuck on the side of the road - you just have to slam to door to get it to shut. The V12 models bring another reality of complexity into view, as they’re essentially double everything (or thereabouts) that’s on the M119 V8s. So when one MAF goes bad, you’re betting the other won’t be far behind. This is where it gets ugly, as the costs involved to maintain these are the typical downfall of most owners, and the reason why these wonderful cars often get parked and abandoned. I’m not suggesting they are trouble prone - the W140 chassis cars are quite robust and run well - I had several that exceeded 350k miles without any major issues. They’re just very complex and require someone who has the time and interest to maintain them. -D > On Mar 11, 2021, at 12:03 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes > wrote: > > If you can buy it cheap enough, you can take your time with correcting its > faults. > It is not likely that there is a line up of potential buyers for it. > Worst case scenario, it becomes tasteful yard art? > > RB > > On 10/03/2021 9:00 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: >> FT, Thanks for the words of wisdom and guidance re the S600. If you can buy it cheap enough, you can take your time with correcting its faults. It is not likely that there is a line up of potential buyers for it. Worst case scenario, it becomes tasteful yard art? RB On 10/03/2021 9:00 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: FT, Thanks for the words of wisdom and guidance re the S600. FT, Thanks for the words of wisdom and guidance re the S600. This is an elegant car, even if it is 26 years old. That draws me to it.. The unbelievable electrical nannies push me away with equal force. The guy that presently owns it owns a pretty successful repair shop, and he parked it 3 years ago rather than get into it.. overwhelmed him, I think. My plate is pretty full as it is, I question my choice to even consider it, at this early point. Then, if there was / is a quick magic fix.. it might be an enjoyable car to cruise. h. First thing I would look at is the wiring (like my 95SL600) that features the biodegradable insulation. My guess is that is the likely culprit, shorting wires, but the coil packs (all one assembly, ) can go bad. The throttle body actuators (electronic controllers, one master one slave, can be rebuilt, some Russian guy does them) go flaky too but that wouldn't be a "miss." The wiring harnesses can be rebuilt if you have the inclination, or there are used ones around. The distributors (there are 2, one for each bank) get funky too. Not a hard or expensive fix but another easy thing to check. See if you can get it cheap, might not be anything too difficult to resolve, and the M120 is VERY entertaining! The engine itself is solid, the electronics can be wonky. I wouldn't go more than $1500 if you can get it started and running, however badly, $1000 if not, recognizing it could be a money pit. Note too that you will have hydraulic suspension to deal with, that can be a total PITA. These are extremely complex cars and the S class more so than the SL as it has all kinds of tricks in the interior. Send pics so I can live vicariously! --FT On 3/10/21 9:38 AM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: On a cross city run yesterday I noticed diesel prices in Phoenix are now well North of the $ 3 mark... best was $3,09 ... highest I saw was $3.29 with gas running more in the $3.20+ range. It ran when parked because of a "miss in the engine"... Anyone here have any words of wisdom about what that might be? Other than expensive? Did not attempt to start it, just gave it a look over. no body damage, clear coat on hood and roof needs redone. Ask was $2K... we're "talking about that". I seem to recall something with plugs was a common issue on v12. and parts were $1,000 per side for coil packs. Thoughts, advise?
