hmmmm. First thing I would look at is the wiring (like my 95SL600) that features the biodegradable insulation.  My guess is that is the likely culprit, shorting wires, but the coil packs (all one assembly, $$$$) can go bad.  The throttle body actuators (electronic controllers, one master one slave, can be rebuilt, some Russian guy does them) go flaky too but that wouldn't be a "miss."  The wiring harnesses can be rebuilt if you have the inclination, or there are used ones around.

The distributors (there are 2, one for each bank) get funky too. Not a hard or expensive fix but another easy thing to check.

See if you can get it cheap, might not be anything too difficult to resolve, and the M120 is VERY entertaining!  The engine itself is solid, the electronics can be wonky.  I wouldn't go more than $1500 if you can get it started and running, however badly, $1000 if not, recognizing it could be a money pit. Note too that you will have hydraulic suspension to deal with, that can be a total PITA.  These are extremely complex cars and the S class more so than the SL as it has all kinds of tricks in the interior.
