W140 chassis cars are very complex, probably the most complex cars of their
time. Multiple independent systems that do all sorts of things, like soft close
doors, control interior lighting, ACC, etc., etc.

That being said, they’re not all that bad to work on. Since each system is
independent of the others, when something like your soft close feature stops
working, you’re not stuck on the side of the road - you just have to slam to
door to get it to shut.

The V12 models bring another reality of complexity into view, as they’re
essentially double everything (or thereabouts) that’s on the M119 V8s. So when
one MAF goes bad, you’re betting the other won’t be far behind.

This is where it gets ugly, as the costs involved to maintain these are the
typical downfall of most owners, and the reason why these wonderful cars often
get parked and abandoned.

I’m not suggesting they are trouble prone - the W140 chassis cars are quite
robust and run well - I had several that exceeded 350k miles without any major
issues. They’re just very complex and require someone who has the time and
interest to maintain them.
