[MBZ] S600

[Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes]

I went and looked at this car maybe 3 weeks ago. Beautiful car in great shape 
except for the oil cooler leak (probably/maybe, could be valve cover gaskets). 
If it is the oil cooler it would be about $2k in parts and maybe 40hr work. I 
chatted with the guy, an Irish guy who has a shop with Beemers and rovers, 
about the likely issue and what’s involved. He didn’t know anything about it, 
car belonged to a friend. I explained all that was involved and offered him 
$1k. He came back with $3k. Looks like no one has bit. I might go back by there 
next week and see what the story is on it. Continue shrewd negotiations.

BTW what chassis is this?
I saw one today flooded out on RT2 in MA. For those that know Concord RT2 makes 
a right turn (eastbound) which they've got under construction. Apparently 
drainage there is inadequate, the travel lane had 6-8 of water in it which the 
Jetta forded just fine. The turnoff to RT2A goes under a new bridge and looks 
to drop down about 24, apparently thats more than an S600 like (I couldn't see 
the badging) car could handle. It looked to have made it mostly through, the 
front bumper was out of the water. I'm guessing water was ingested...

Heh.  I've wondered about that too.  Seems like any example in
less-than-perfect shape would constantly stink of hydraulic fluid inside
and out.  All it takes is one bad fitting in the interior and you would
have a heck of a cleanup job on the leather and carpets.

MB uses a mineral based hydraulic oil that is pretty much odorless.  Same thing 
in my SL500 top hydraulics as in the 600.

I seem to remember a 600 LWB sitting at a local indies.  It needed a 
hydraulic master control unit for the drivers door which either raised 
and lowered the windows or operated the locks; I think it was for the 
windows, and the reason it was hydraulic was because the conventional 
system made a noise!  The delay in repairing it was because the owner 
was trying to decide if he wanted to spend $2600.00 for the master 
control unit which was quite small.

Yeah one of those, why bother type things.
Far as I (well wikipedia) knows, VW already had vehicles in the luxury 
bracket, such as the Audi A8 and Bentley. I think the would have been 
better off to put money into the Bentley brand to build it up to be a 
competitor to BMW and MB. Or build Audi into a more fancy brand, trying 
to get a third horse in the race is a waste of resources.
You're quite right that VW is seen as a value for money brand and trying 
to be everything for everybody can soon leave you as being nothing to 
nobody.

Based on the M100 level of tech, the W140 is a technical disaster 
with massive economic impact to a future owner.  The S600 is twice 
as complex as the standard model, as it would be loaded with bells, 
whistles and subsystems that can not be hand crafted in the manner 
one could with a Grosser.  Door locks, closing assist, ACC, ESP, Air 
ride, magic windows, heated seats, moving rear seats, rear seat 
business tech upgrades, and the over engineered engine with 
biodegrading wire.  All in a shell that looks the same as any other 
W140 on the road, unless it is LWB.  Even then it looks much the 
same. 

I posit the w126 will be held in much higher esteem than a w140 as 
collectable in future.  The SEC and SEL were built much better, with 
higher quality systems.  Far fewer computers to go wonky, and still 
put together by well trained German employees.

them up plenty already.  No wonder Vdubs are a POS anymore.   They 
are supposed to be simple, folks cars, easy to work on, cheap to buy, 
cheap to own, cheap to operate, cheap to fix.   That is part of why 
bugs were so popular.


The other part was because they dared to be different, had great 
advertising by DDB, emphasizing the differences, and they were so 
homely they were cute.   It was the only thing to do after the mule 
died  Think small  I have a bunch of those ads I saved from my 
desk surroundings in college, along with toaster tank BMW ads and the 
MB 108 ad that was also brilliant.  some people think buying a house 
is the most important investment they will ever make


A VW fattylac deserves to be a resounding flop.

injection harness are the most replaced item and then the engine harness.
you'll go through alot more injection harness's because it sits on top the
motor where the heat is. alot of this has to do with the averall amount of
heat in the engine compartment. I added one of the 92 degree fan switch
modifications from the guy on prodigy so the electric fans come on at 92
instead of 100.

 In general you want to pay a bit extra for a 98 or 99, and ask about
 the evap and wiring.

	Yes, remove it and disassemble, clean, lube and put it back together. 
Most switches simply pull out of the dash/console.

Some cars (W140s for sure) got the biodegradable wiring (and all of the 
wiring problem associated with that) in 1992 while others (like the 124 
diesel) didn't have until 1995. Just depends on on the particular 
chassis AND engine.


Usually switching the Hazard switch on and off about 100 times will 
clean it or break so it requires replacement to restore reliable 
function. Have you tried cleaning (or buckling/unbucking about 50 times) 
the seat belt buckle switch? When it gets dirty in early '80s cars - the 
buzzer may sound.

Lastly I'll note that some folks have discovered that right behind  
the engine is a plastic water distribution device (dual mono- 
valves?). That has a tendency now to crack (age/heat) and dump all  
the coolant. It is a bit ugly to access for replacement, kind of  
stick on engine, put engine in car, what you to remove it later? Why  
is that firewall in the way.


In general you want to pay a bit extra for a 98 or 99, and ask about  
the evap and wiring.

recognized the error of their ways and reinforced this weak link? Was
it 96 or so?

Which also leads to the thought that perhaps the early 92 and up
replacements were not reinforced?

to install an evap
from a e-class and a baffle to fill in the gap because the e class  
evap isn't as wide.
However the internet is full of stories about evaps being replaced 3  
or 4 times in the 90s,

so I'm not sure when the alternate fix was put into place.

Sounds like it would be much simpler and cheaper to just keep the dream and
not mess it up with reality.  Perhaps I'll find a nice 300SDL or just put
some more $ into EM.
