[MBZ] stupid tranmission

2008-08-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
So I have spent all weekend trying to pull the stupid transmission on
this 190D Im working on. Its tight but I got all the bolts out with no
problems at all. Unbolted torque converter etc, then get ready to slide
the tranny back. At this point the damn thing is about out and is just
hanging there but there is NO ROOM for it to drop all the way out. You
see, instead of the torque converter coming out with the tranny, it
stayed where it was and the tranny came out of it. Well doing it this
way there is NO ROOM for the damn tranny to clear the firewall. Thats
the only thing I can figure is holding it in. I mean its just almost
touching the ground, I have tried every which way but loose to get it
out. It just doesnt have that extra 1/4" or whatever it needs to come
on out. If the TC would have come loose like it should have, it would
have practically dropped straight down after pulling it loose.

Guess my next plan is to loosen the motor mounts and move the engine
forward as far as I can. Damn.

Next question, I got a couple of 722.409 trannies that are out of a 2.6
Im going to put in. Supposedly they are good, I sure hope so and I dont
have to pull it back out. Anyway, one of them looks normal. The other
one has a strange fluid line assembly that runs from the very back round
cover on the drivers side, up to what looks like a switch block, then to
a small port near the front of the tranny. Never seen this before.
Looked in the EPC and found the assembly, it says its for increase in
transmission shift point. And the switch block which has 1 wire to is
says its a magnetic solenoid. So, anybody know what this does? I
assume if I leave it installed and not hooked up it will be normal, but
if you feed power to it the shift points will increase? Wonder if this
would be of an advantage to hook up in the 190D? Could wire in a toggle
switch or something to increase shift points?

When I had the tranny rebuilt in the SLC, I paid the shop to R&R it -
and it was GOOD choice. They fought the torque converter for half a
day to get it off the engine - the center protrusion (the right word
escapes me now) was corroded in the end of the crankshaft. They did
have the advantage of having the car up on a lift and used long pry
bars.

Kaleb-

Do what you can to get the TC back into the tranny. put the rear mount
back in and pound the TC free through the access hole in the bottom of
the block. Might have to rotate the TC 90-120 degrees a few times to
do it. I don't think that the trans will drop with the TC in place,
and having the mass of the motor free while trying to drop the trans
would cause me some concern.

WHen I did the rebuild on my 300d 2.5 the converter didn't fight much,
but it did try to stay in place. Also FWIW I found loosening the
engine mount bolts ~ 3 turns seem to help let the motor tilt a bit
more.

The tc is loose, but I cant get anything in there to get it to slide off
the engine, so at least its not stuck.

I guess the moral of that story is to smear the stub of the TC with
NeverSeez when you put one together.

Never have this problem with real (manual) transmissions!
Subject should be: Stupid Automatic transmissions!

Too bad the lords of Montvale never want to give us a choice!

You are correct. Manual trannys suffer from other stupid failures at the
input side that auto trannys don't suffer from, like worn out pilot
bearings and siezed throwout bearings and failed slave cylinders.
