Like buying Bosch ignition points from the VW dealer or the Porsche dealer.
Everybody knew, decades before the internet, that you wanted to cross reference
the Porsche part number to the Bosch number and buy it from an independent
parts store, or cross the Bosch number to a VW number and buy it from the VW
dealer. Prices on the VW parts were often less than half the price of the
Porsche parts, even if they came in yellow and red Bosch boxes from both
dealers.

I had a similar experience many years back buying a temperature sensor for my
Saab 99. The indy parts guy knew his stuff. He sold me a part listed for a VW
at about $20, the identical part # but listed for the Saab was about 4X that
price.

My father used to tell a story about buying oil filters. He was in a GM
dealership for some reason and decided he might as well pick up oil filters so
he went to the parts counter. The partsman asks what they are for and is told
one for a Chevy pickup and one for a Buick sedan (I don't recall what years
etc). Parts guy produces 2 filters with the same part # on them and the invoice
shows them separately and the Buick filter is much more expensive than the
Chevy filter. My father asks why and is given some weak excuse, so he tells the
guy he has changed his mind and wants 2 filters for the Chevy. Parts guy is a
bit miffed but produces a new invoice and the same filters are sold for the
lower price.

Now that's a very strange game.
When somebody calls for a price check, they're saying "I'd like to buy it from you,
but if the price is too high, I'm staying away". And their response to that is to
quote double the actual price to scare the potential customer away?

Now, what just happened to me has a clearer motive behind it, if it was
intentional.
A business customer calls the local Chevy dealer for the price on a couple of
seatbelts. My cost on them is $98 and $119 at Ed Rinke Chevrolet, but I'd have
to pay shipping or drive to the Detroit area to get them. I was going to see if
a dealer in Lansing would match Rinke's price, but my body and paint man
offered to get them for me wholesale. The local folks tell my friend that they
belts are the same price, $102.xx each. He says he'll take that. When the belts
came, he showed me the invoice, and they charged him 106.95 and 129.70, which
is more than I would have paid the Detroit guys to ship them straight to me.

I had similar happen when I was looking for 10 gallons of synthetic
75W-90 for our Kenworth's differentials. I called around and went to
Fleet Pride in Albuquerque to purchase it because they had the best
price.

When I got there to actually buy it, it was noticably lower than the
telephone quote. The fellow there said he wasn't sure I was coming in,
so he quoted a higher price over the phone. I was glad for the lower
price in person, having saved something like $100, IIRC.

Had a buddy call them for a price on an SLK oil filter. Phone guy quoted him
$20.

Had him walk in ahead of me at the counter so they wouldn't associate him with
me and it was $10. I stepped up and said he was with me and it went to $8.

It's the games they play. Why, I have no idea.

"genuine" I think when I got it years ago.
