I'm looking for tips and knowledge for getting my SDL high enough to
 RR the
trans using floor/bottle jacks, jack stands, and ramps. Ideas? Any
 experience? TIA all.

450 SL tranny replacement. Had to get it scary high in the air
in order to actually have room to work the tranny out from under.
I think I had to jack it up in two steps, using big firewood rounds
as spacers. Not my idea of great fun, but fairly stable if the
wood is big enough. (And sawn square on the ends!)

Luther,

Harbor Freight sells a tranny handling adapter (about $30) which replaces the 5
inch saddle on your standard floor jack.? If you are thinking one man job, this
will make the difference.? Unfortunately, it adds about 5 inches to the height
you need to clear the frame.?? Worth it tho.? It straps the tranny down and
tilts to permit angling the trans into place.? I just resealed my son's Dodge
Caravan, by myself, and I am 69.? I did saw off about a 3 inch strip on the
adapter to let it fit more easily in the space available.? Mine is available if
you live close.

For height, in front, I filled two std cement blocks, two pices of 3/4
plywood?which then I set my jack stands on.? In the back, the two jackstands
were sufficient.

Letting the engine/ trans assembly drop in the rear (keeping close watch for
firewall clearance and cable strain) will make it easier to get at those
honkin' big hex bolts, best reached with about 20 inches of extentions and a
1/2 breaker bar.? Clean the hex sockets (10mm) thoroughly with a brake
cleaner, you don't want to round one of these and have it slip!? When they
break loose, you will swear you broke something!? Heavy gloves will cushion the
hands but watch your elbow.?

Finally, get as much of the trans fluid out before you start, as it will run
out the tailshaft when you pull the driveshaft.

Good luck!

Luther:

I did my 300d (w124) w/the 6 ton stands (4 of them, under still sound
lifting pads, front higher than rear) and the 800lb jack above. With
the stands about 3/4 up and the jack down and plate tilted forward a
bit to lower the bell housing I cleared by about 1/2 inch. Don't
screw w/the scissors jack; not worth the hassles (800lb one much more
stable and adjustability saves time and grief). can always sell the
jack when done! Personally I don't like ramps.

Would advise against wood as replacement for jack stands. If using
wood at least bolt together- screws break WAY too easily.

While you're in there- great time to replace the rear main seal.

Are you putting in a reman/junkyard tranny or DIY rebuild? The
rebuild isn't as hard as it might sound!

No need if you have a bit of heft in you. Just drop it on your chest and

If renting a transmission jack is too much, ride a bike...

In _their_ standard floor jack. I bought the adapter for

bought the matching jack too. (You can always use an extra

Didn't work for me on the SL tranny, I'm not that beefy. I
did end up bench-pressing the manual tranny back into place
on the 190D. I think to get the auto out, since I didn't care
about it, I lowered it on the jack and then dragged it off
and onto the ground to drag it out from under the (too low)
car. Scrape, bang, scrape.

Re: [MBZ] trans RR shade-tree style

2008-04-30 Thread R A Bennell
They should have a scissor style jack intended for transmissions as well. I
bought one of the adapters for my floor
jack and discovered the height problem too. I went back and swapped it for the
scissor style jack. That will drop
the transmission down to about 3 inches from the floor. I still had to slide
the tranny off of the jack in order to
get sufficient clearance to drag it out from under the vehicle without jacking
the vehicle up further. The jack
works well. It is raised and lowered by a screw. I use an air ratchet in the
input of the screw and move it up and
down with ease. It helps to have 2 or 3 people for reinstalling. One on either
side of the jack and tranny and one
under the front looking up into the bellhousing to ge the alignment right - at
least that was the way we did it -
on a manual tranny 4X4 with the transfer case attached which made the tranny a
bit unbalanced to the back and one
side. Might be easier on a basic tranny that would balance better.

I'm thinking I need about 2' of clearance under the engine to squeeze
the tranny
in and out. Maybe those leftover 2x12s that I have will work when stacked and
screwed together.

My advice would be to see if you can find a local private owned, private run
garage that has a couple of bays and ask to lease one for a couple of
weekends. There was a guy I used to know around here that ran a garage out
of his old pole barn, had a couple frame lifts and a ramp lift, and if you
talked to him right he didn't mind letting you use one for a while.

Too bad it's a subdivision now with McMansions in it. *sighs* I could use a
lift for rent right about now.

Also, you are a big truck mechanic, correct? This may not mean as much to
you then, but when I was working as a mechanic for a Chrysler dealer we
always had more bays than line techs. Large shop, three rows of lifts. So my
General Manager never cared if I pulled my car into one from time to time.
You know, had to ask first and make sure it was ok at that time, each time.

Yes, 11 pounds per square inch to break a forearm (per bone, laterally).

I had no problem letting it come down on my chest and then wrestling out
from under it. 6-2 and 280lb. Like I said, if you got a bit of heft to
you. Manual on the other hand is super light and is no problem (just
another reason to go to manual :) ). I have done atleast 4 transmissions
in the same manner. Just make sure you have someone near by

When I worked at a Honda dealer, one of my coworkers showed up on Monday
with a huge cast on his arm. It seems that Kelly had pulled the tranny
(THM 350 or THM 400) on his Chevy pickup on Saturday. He braced his
elbow against the driveway with his palm under the oil pan, grabbed
the tailshaft with his right hand, and pulled the tranny off the locating
dowels so he could catch it on his left hand. Shattered his left forearm
like a toothpick. Scared me off from manual tranny catching for life.

 Mitch.

Bench Pressing the 280 lb. back IN A CONTROLLED MANNER would be the better of
me at any time or size and I was 5'14 and 305 pounds.

Thats 20 year ago, today a brake job leaves me panting.

This is just like the one I used and referred to in an earlier post.

The only thing I would suggest is that you might want to modify the top as it
is a bit narrow and short to balance
the transmission on and the strap is not a whole lot of help. The adapters that
fit a floor jack have adjustable
arms that probably work better to balance the tranny. Would not be difficult to
rig something similar to the
scissor jack.

An oft-overlooked factor is the height of the transmission

Borrow an engine hoist (a good one!) and pull engine and tranny
together. Vastly safer than jacking the car high enough to get the
tranny out from underneath. I'd only attempt that with a lift.
