Re: [MBZ] Unimog Camper Conversion

2024-05-25 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Big national gathering of boondockers and campers last weekend called the
“Overland Expo” at the local fairgrounds. Nearby is a local landscaping
business that sells flowers/plants/trees, etc. We were over there getting some
plants for the yard, and as we were loading up the car noticed that there was a
significant traffic jam forming on the road. Looking ahead, I saw a Puch-Styer
(Austrian versiion of a Unimog) configured as an off-road camper trundling up
the road at about 25 mph, clearly close to full throttle from the sound of it.

I’m sure there were probably some Unimogs there, too, but we did not
investigate.

Yeah, Schmidt used to (probably still does) make
a lot of Unimog attachments. Basically, any
attachment/implement that can be used on a
tractor can be used on a Mog.

Hwy depts have been using the articulated mowers
on tractors for many years. However, the post
trimmer is unique. Most post/tree trimmers are a
spring loaded small mower outside the larger
mower. Hedgers are used a lot in the vineyard
business.

The Nat. Guard had a display several years ago
featuring a Diesel Mog, outfitted with a
backhoe/loader and some other goodies. I wanted

[MBZ] Unimog snowblower

2009-01-14 Thread Jim Cathey

I bought one, for $3500. Mounting and any repairs will
be extra. If merely owning the device will prevent future
debilitating snowfall then that's OK with me too.

Story:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/moglog.html#Blower

Just the picture:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/Mog/blowerload.jpg

I'm not sure how I'll get it mounted yet, nor whether my
lowly 406 will be able to effectively drive it. Heck, I'm
counting on the Mog's crane to unload the pickup, but what
if it balks? I haven't used it in awhile...

I bought one, for $3500. Mounting and any repairs will
be extra. If merely owning the device will prevent future
debilitating snowfall then that's OK with me too.

Story:

Just the picture:

I'm not sure how I'll get it mounted yet, nor whether my
lowly 406 will be able to effectively drive it. Heck, I'm
counting on the Mog's crane to unload the pickup, but what
if it balks? I haven't used it in awhile...

Those are great stump pullers. Put it in first (normally start in
third), let the clutch out, and wonder exactly how much slack was in
that chain as I haven't yet felt any resistance from the tree uprooting.
Turned out I'd pulled the (admittedly not very big) dead tree five
feet. Who needs horsepower when you've got gears?

I think 1956 is still a non-synchro transmission. Might want to hold
out for a newer one.

As far as I know all 404 Unimogs are synchro gearboxes. In any case I
would be surprised if the trans hasnt been replaced in which case it
would have any upgrades.

This is however a early french 404, no real meaning in that other than
it probably tuns a little quicker due to the shorter wheelbase and
there are some other nitpicky differences like the wooden bedsides,
different hood latches, etc. It also has the nifty safari windshield
that tilts out at the bottom for ventilation.

I have a mog, its a 68 404 troop carrier that I converted to a 4-door,
you can see pictures at http://www.mogtech.com (site is a little bit
broken right now but all the pictures are working)

I would hardly call a mog a hummer for a benz guy, that would be the
current G-class. The mog is very much a street-legal tractor. They
are neat trucks and a lot of fun, and the owners tend to be
iconoclastic individualists much like the die-hard diesel benz guys.

If you are truly interested in mogs you sould come to one of the big
gatherings, especially NorthWest MogFest which is an event that my
friends and I put on every summer in Oregon. You can find more info at
http://www.northwestmogfest.com

[MBZ] Unimog down

2007-01-02 Thread Jim Cathey

A friend called, and said that he'd scored a used 6kW UPS from work,
and that he'd trade me the 3kW he'd already gotten from there in
exchange for my help with the crane to bring home the new units.
(Think small file cabinets, one filled with car batteries.) No
problem, says I, if I can get it going! Hard to start in the winter,
and the hydraulics have been freezing up. Obviously there's water in
the system.

Anyway, I get it all going and go off to meet him at his work. The
Mog was making weird intermittent crunching noises, for which I couldn't
see any cause, and it even started pulling to the side a bit. I'm
trepidatious, but made a commitment and decide to finish the job,
though slowly. We got the units loaded (easily, the crane didn't even
seem to notice the weight of the battery cabinet). On the way to the
guy's house he noticed that my noisy wheel had a camber problem.
(Much easier to see when you're watching the thing drive than when
just looking at it statically.)

Great, that explains a lot. The oil leak at the axle must be because
the wheel bearing is shot and has allowed the axle to chew up the
seal. The noise is explained as well. I wonder how long it's been
like this, and what it'll cost to repair? I kept the speeds very low
on this trip, and it made it home in apparently no worse condition
than when it left. But it's grounded now, for sure.
