Ha!  My first MB was a '69 280S - we put a lot of miles on it but I
struggled with the dual carbs, window mechanisms and the rockers were
getting pretty rusty.  I replaced both rockers but the front fenders
needed work.  I rebuilt the engine and it ran great! but it's days were
numbered and I finally traded it for a bunch of parts for my 1st diesel
(78 240D).

Never dreamed a 280S would bring such a high bid - but I bet that
restoration cost a Bunch!

Love those 108s though - my favorite was a '72 280SE 4.5 we had for
several years. What an awesome engine that was!  So much power - it
would chirp the tires under full accel when it shifted from 2-3 (at
least I think it was the 2-3 shift) that occurred at 45mph

Sunroof is a big plus. I don't like the 68... the safety bits ruined the
interiors. But a 250SE is a very nice car.

If its not rusty, its certainly worth saving.

I know in the 70s Dogde had the same wheel bearings as the 110
chassis. I fixed up a friend who needed to get back to KC, but his
dogde had a bad front wheel bearing. I told him to come out and I'd see
what I could do. Popped it out, looked at the number, recognized it was
the same as MB. Went out to my junker 190c, popped off the front hub,
stuck the bearings in the dogde and sent him on the way!

I love it when a plan comes togetherespecially when there was no

What vapor lock?

My 108 (280SE 4.5) had the pump about 6 inches from the tank
- and down low. Pretty much no chance for classic vapor lock.
(fuel is vapor at the fuel pump so the fuel pump can't pump)

And mine had the electronic fuel injection (D-jet? I don't
remember which "jet" it is) again making vapor lock nearly
impossible.

I
agree. That is the problem with phones that have 12 terapixel (I am
being facetious) cameras. The inferior optics plus the over sized image

There is a reason for

It depends. If you have a yahoo account, Flickr is yahoos photo site. If
you have a google account, Picasa is theirs. They are pretty simple to
use, a couple of mouse clicks and every thing gets uploaded.

I've been using Picasa occasionally since it was created but didn't realise
its storage program was accessible publicly. Early Picasa was simple and
easy to use, but its upgrades seem to have made it more complex.
Already being a Yahoo member, perhaps I'll try Flickr.

Correct - you are wrong. They maintain their passenger compartment
size/shape. However, the decelleration is rather fast - you might not
survive the G-forces, even if you don't get crushed.

If I'd spent two hours downloading that 18mb message via dial-up I

Re: [MBZ] 108

2013-08-30 Thread Larry T
I had a slightly different epiphany - when i was doing 90in my 911 I
could see way in the distance a big Buick slowly pulling out in
front of me. I thought - "They have no idea how fast I am
approaching" as I got on the brakes and slowed dramatically. That was
the last time i drove in "Go to Jail Territory". It's just too
dangerous. People just don't expect a road rocket to be heading toward
them and the fast driver has _/all /_the responsibility to avoid the
accident. Many people can't even see a small sports car several hundred
yards in the distance much less estimate how fast they're approaching.

BTW, i know I was being irresponsible by driving so fast on a public
road and never drove that fast again...

BTW, a few years ago the speed limits in Montana and N. Dakota were not
enforced. I've even heard that people from Europe have brought their
fast cars over specifically to drive on those interstates because the
Autobahn was becoming so congested. That was on a program called
/Modern Marvels - The Autobahn/ and included a great snip of a SL
tumbling over and over from "high speed" then seeing the driver hop out
and walk to the hill next to the highway. They said the Germans built
cars that could survive and excel on the unlimited speed zones. It was
pretty impressive. I believe it's still on Youtube in several parts
BTW, there wasn't much left of that SL!

drive fast anymore in the USA after decades of believing the driving time

ago on I-85 in NC. i had been driving with another guy at about 120 but he
turned off, so i slowed down to a comfortable cruising speed. about 5
minutes later the blue lights came on behind me.

"do you know why i pulled you over?"
"yeah, you felt obliged to because of my speed"

"like 85ish. maybe closer to 90"
"what?? why did you tell me that???"

of jail, you'll have to return in person to stand trial"

That's true, but the way it used to be, pictures over a certain size were
saved to the server's disk and links added to the bottom of the email.
That way an external picture site (which might require registration)
isn't necessary.

think I would rather have a v8. I have had a couple of 4.5s none drivable tough

Now that was a car that was an example of a car that was a mistake to buy. Toad
had it a long time, stores it inside so it could sit for a long long time. I do
not have any indoor storage so it sat outside. And old car like that will ruin
quick because they usually leak water. So that car filled up with water and got
all musty and moldy inside. I ended up selling it for about $600. So that is
what I would be worried about with this car. If and when I get a big shop build
and can store cars inside, then I will think about it. I would still like to
have one someday. It's bad enough leaving my 115s outside. As to more modern
cars like a 124, you can leave them outside and they will not leak water etc
like an old car

I agree. That is the problem with phones that have 12 terapixel (I am being

crappy pictures to be huge.

There is a reason for Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, DropBox, etc. They are easy

2013-08-29 Thread Andrew Strasfogel
I owned a 280SE 6 cyl. sedan, several 280SE 3.5 coupes and a 3.5 sedan.
They were all awesome and fun to drive. The 3.5s were fast, dependable,
and reasonably fuel efficient. The 280Se was my first concours winner. I
loved driving at night with the colorful dash lights and slightly growly
EFI engine.

It's almost twice as big and gets about the same milage -- 3.23 gears
instead of 3.88, uses less fuel.

I suspect at 4.5 can be safely tuned to get around 18 on the highway
if you use only premium.

No comparison in terms of power, the 4.5 is a real beast. Factory
specs are 9.5 sec 0-60, and most of that is on the "fast" end. It's
actually a pain to drive on the open road, it keeps wanting to go
faster and it's necessary to keep lifting your foot to stay near the
speed limit. Top speed is 125 for the 4.5 and 118 for the sixes,
although if you are brave you can push them faster. You will wear the
cylinders out pretty fast if you do (as in a couple runs).

My 280SE 4.5 got 17 mpg on the highway, and really wanted to run at 90
and up  Enormous power out of the 4.5L, much more (and at much
lower rpm) than the sixes, which were screaming at highway speed and
as a result very fuel hungry (upper teens to very low 20's mpg).

My pick of the 108 litter would be a 280SEL. If the FI got too
costly, I am sure I could snag a FI system off a 3.3 dogde or
similar and adapticate it. However if the pump is cared for, they
will last a lifetime or more.

The M130/M180 is so smooth and quiet. They are nice engines,
especially euro/pre-smog

250SE is not bad
250S with webers would be nice

Dan can have all the warped nasty zenights he wants. Another
possibility is to snag the dual 2 barrel solexes off an early 220S
M180. those just run.

111/112 is nice too. This grille is not as big though.

Me too - I've owned 3 W108's with the last being a 4.5 - that engine was
amazing - really smooth and powerful - that 280SEL was great on the
interstate! Got terrible mpg's but a joy to drive. My 280SEwas an
awesome car also - and the engine got low 20s mpg's. Also a beautiful
car only lacking a big honking V8!

Now don't start trashing the Zeniths.

Jaime and I will have to start defending them. Again.

Maybe it's just me, but I had at least three MBs with Zeniths over the years,
and I never had a problem with them once they were adjusted and set up properly.

The "E" originally meant "fuel injected" - and I think for the 108
vintage cars it still did.

Until the letters came in front, in the 90's, that's
exactly (and only) what "E" meant. Not definitive,
though, as SL's (starting with the gullwing/300)
never had an "E", even when fuel-injected.

I have never owned a 108 with a V-8, but the ones I had with the inline six
were good cars and did well in the road.

I like the simplicity of the sizes and the amount of space in the engine
compartment they give you. The V-8s always sort of scared me with their fuel
systems and the appearance of being shoehorned into the car.

FI sixes are mechanical, and you gotta have really deep pockets to
keep them running these days -- on top of the fact that several
parts were NLA a decade ago.

Still weak in the knees compared to the V8, and fuel hungry.

Peter

Buy a 280S and let Dan show off his carb expertise.

Or you could buy the webers from Larry

or you could convert to EFI with the holly kit or parts robbed from
merkun iron in the junkyard.

Or you could pay Neil at Star motors to convert it to EFI. He was
converting a $$$ M100 $$$ when I was there to visit.

any way, the 280S/SE is a nice car if you can afford it.

injected models also.

The six is rather breathless at high speeds and doesn't get better

available with FI, only with a pair of 2bls that are often roasted by
stuck hear risers.

If you are lusting after a V8, I have a parts car for you.
