Re: [MBZ] 115 Headlight trim? How do I separate the plastic from the chrome part?

2013-03-28 Thread Randy Bennell
When you say "blinker lens" I assume you refer to the orange piece. It
looks to me like it can be removed from the larger clear plastic part
from the back of the unit. It appears that the unit was originally put
together by the use of some sort of heated tool that melted the plastic
to form tabs that hold the clear part into the chrome ring and also the
orange part into the clear part. I think I can either use a bit of epoxy
to hold the parts together or maybe heat the end of a bolt or something
similar and melt the plastic near the original spots to create new tabs.

I shall see how this works in due course. Right now I am trying to get
an adjustment on the price given that the condition was not accurately
disclosed and I have advised that I am not happy with them. They were
advertised as being in good condition and the photos did not show the
pitted chrome or the one spot that is broken. I think I can use them if
I can salvage the inside plastic bit but I had not planned on having to
do that. Based on the description and photos, I thought I would be able
to just put them on the car and have my old ones as potential spares. Oh
well, nothing in life is perfect I guess.

My car has good chrome but a badly cracked plastic part on the passenger side.
I bought a pair of these on ebay but unfortunately, the chrome is not as good

There is a fair amount of pitting on the top of the chrome trim part on the
ones I got from ebay.
I have been looking at them and trying to determine if there is some trick to
taking the plastic part out of the chrome part.
Anyone been there and done that?

Dunno 'bout the USA lights, but on the Frankenheap's euros
the trim ring just lifts off when you remove the bottom screw.

Does not look as though it is intended to be removed.
It looks as though they set the plastic part inside the metal part and
then used some source of heat to melt the plastic in spots that
essentially forms little tabs that then overlap the metal.
I think, I can use a dremel type tool and grind off enough of the
plastic tab to let me remove the lens from the ring of metal. Then, I
will either use some epoxy to add a bit back onto the tabs or else try
to do what they originally did by heating up th end of a metal rod and
using it to melt a new tab next to the original. I think I likely only
need to do this to the two tabs located at the top of the unit.

We shall see how that works.

2013-03-26 Thread Randy Bennell

1. I will put them on photobucket and add a link.
2. The plastic part is relatively loose. I can wiggle it a bit. I just
don't know if it is intended to be removable or if it is not.
If it is, there must be some trick to it. It there is not, then I need
to figure out how to do it without ruining it.
