Subject: [MBZ] 126 Electrical Gremlins

Well, although the paint job is done, the car's now got a few electrical
problems.

I already mentioned the tach not working, but today, I had a dead
battery...purchased in '03, I figured it was time to put a new one in.
~$125

from the dealer. (I get a discount for a 'vintage' car.) Car now cranks,
but won't start. GP light not coming on. Plugged it the block heater for
about an hour (31 degrees outside) and after several attempts, I got it
running.,

Now, when I try to start the car, (as before) no GP light, but after it
starts, the GP light comes on for about a minute and then goes off. Now I
could see loosing one or two GP's and still being able to start the car,
but
I suspect with as difficult it was to start and as rough as it ran, maybe
I

lost all of them? Or should I be looking at the GP relay? Is the GP ckt
fused? Can't find it in the ETM or the fuse list in the box.

As an aside, even after it was warmed up, about 5 minutes, it still runs
rough at idle, but smothes right out when I hit the throttle.

Any clues as to what may be wrong?

Thanks,

Angelo

In my case, it was telling me that the tiny five year old 700CCA battery was no
longer up to the job. When that finally died, and I put in a brand new Group 49,
the glow lamp in my W116 started working properly again.

Not nearly as often as it is telling you that the GP relay itself is bad.

This has been discussed before. It should be in the archives. IIRC
Marshall opined that the GP relays in 60x-engined cars had a finite
life, such that any originally installed was surely faulty by now, and
a NOS Mercedes part might have been sitting on the shelf long enough
to be faulty as well (due to dried-out electrolytic caps or some
such). This was after several people described glow problems that
*weren't* cured by replacing the relay after all plugs tested fine.

Pete, Since the GP light is coming on/off, does this mean the GP fuse is
OK? I only see two plugs on the topside, One for the GP's, the other for
power. The ETM shows the fuse internal to the relay. (Yes, I did find it in
the book!) Does is dis-assemble to access the fuse? I'll bug out the GP's
tomorrow in the daylight.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] 126 Electrical Gremlins

2009-12-28 Thread Dieselhead
To check the plugs, pull the cap off the GP relay. Pull the harness
to the GPs off the relay. Test each pin in the plug to ground. As
Peter said, they should be about 0.8 ohm to ground. You can find op
GPs easily with any cheap multimeter. to measure 0.7 to 0.8 takes a
good meter. Most fail open. Some fail grounded, and that takes out
the fuse. If one plug shows 1 ohm higher resistance, it is on the
way out.

If you have a 4 cyl or a 5 cyl, one or two pins are blank.

You have at least two glow plugs bad, maybe more. It's possible the
fuse has cracked (they do, with age), but I'd guess you have more
than one bad GP, too.

Fix the fuse, but check all six GP for resistance to ground, should
be 0.8 ohm. If one or more are bad (open or very high -- or lower
than 0.08), get all six and replace them all.

Don't use Champions, get OE Bosch -- the champions are meant for 6v
via duty cycle, not 12V even though they are rated 12V, and will
fail very quickly. I've put them in my Volvo, not a good plan.

The GP relay is self diagnostic -- if you don't have balanced
current for all the plugs, the light will either not come on at all
or flash, then come on again after you start the car. This is to
tell you to fix the glow plugs!

It's a flat plate/strip fuse held in place with screws at each end - not a
standard autop fuse in a holder. It can look OK, and still be cracked.

Time to test them individually. I take them all out and, using vise-grips
to hold them because of the heat, jumper them across the battery and look
for the bright orange color.

The glow plug circuit is fused; the fuse is in the glow plug relay.
