I like your suggestions. Driving it today, I experienced no slipping, just
slight bumping when it shifts. I think an experienced MB shop is a very good
first step. I live in Evanston, IL, just north of Chicago if anyone has
any recommendations.

Also, thanks to all who responded to my door lock and water leak requests.
The water leak was solved by cleaning out the hinge wells under the hood, and
the vacuum door lock problem was solved by Rusty's replacements of three
actuators.

Thanks, again.

That sounds like low mileage for a bad transmission. You need to find an
mechanic that has experience with this type of MB transmission. He will be
able to either adjust it for no slips, tell you he can make it some better,
or pronounce the tranny is toast. Your run of the mill repair shop will not
know how to do the adjustments. I'm not sure where you are located, perhaps
a list member in the area can recommend someone. You might ever consider the
MB dealership.
If the tranny is toast, don't use a regular tranny shop. They have probably
never worked on a MB transmission. You can get a rebuilt from Rusty for
around $1,850 and get it installed for $300-$500. Of course, shipping of two
transmissions might cost a bit. I think there is another rebuild shop in
New Jersey that some have used. Since the car is in great shape I wouldn't
hesitate to replace the tranny. As other posters have said that is 4-5
payments on a new car, or if you get another older MB it will likely take
that much to get it into the same shape as your car.

There are 187,000 miles on the car. I'm not the original owner so I
don't

know what has been done before I got it. I got it 40,000 miles ago.

The fluid/filter was changed/flushed very recently. The mechanic said he
adjusted "something." It seemed to have changed the shift pattern
slightly.
Today when I drove it, it didn't seem to race/slip as much, but
tomorrow's

another day!

Last week I took it to a tranny shop, and they said they would "fix" it
for
1,800-1,900 dollars. Someone else said I should put in an
exchange/rebuilt

one.

Even though the car is in great shape and I love driving it, I know the
car
is not worth the price of all the repairs that I could make to it. I
would
like to keep it though, and I'm having a great time fixing some of the
other

things. (door vac system, water leaks, etc.)

Exactly, David! Too many people have a problem with a nice car and instead
of spending a few thousand $'s getting it as near perfect as possible
they'll spend $15k for a Toyota/Honda and end up with much less car than if
they'd fixed their old car.

Of course, there's times when a car has too much rust or too many problems
making repairing uneconomical - but the thought process needs to occur
rather than just going and getting a new car loan.

I went thru this on my '78 240D and granted, it's easier for me to do work
since I provide all my own labor. Anyway, I spent approx $2200 fixing
everything needed - from shocks to rebuilding the engine to fixing interior
stuff. Now, I have a 240D that's in near perfect condition. As someone
said (sorta) , "it's not what your car is worth, its what it's worth to
you'. I still have the 240D -- it's the perfect backup car for us - it
sits for weeks sometimes yet stll starts and drives as it should.

I'm glad I didn't go out and buy a Accord - I'd just be paying off the loan
now and it would just be an old anonymous car - that I see thousands of
every day.

Also, in many ways, having eBay makes it easier to find good prices on
parts.

Have a nice Sunday!!

The cost of repairs and maintenance, including a $1800 - $1900
transmission,

are recovered through use of the car & have nothing to do with the market
price of a car.

I think I've said this before, but my rule of thumb is, "can I get a
better car for the amount of money it would take to fix this one?"
Usually the answer is no, especially when I figure in that I know what's
wrong with the one I have, while one I buy will have a new, unknown set
of problems.

How many miles are on the tranny? Have you changed the fluid/filter? Have
there been any adjustments made to the transmission modulator since it
started slipping? Have you checked the vacuum system for leaks? My
experience with 82 & 83 300D transmissions is not good. At lot of them start
slipping around 250k and you have to go with a replacement.

The engine races trying to get into 2nd and 3rd and eventually makes it.
When the engine is not up to full temp. the racing does not occur or not
as

much.

Thoughts?
