A friend of mine laser engraves wood for pistol grips he sells at gun shows.
More recently he takes ammo cans, coats them with some magic stuff and then
burns it back off with the laser. He gave me a couple with the Maine state seal
on them, pretty cool stuff.

The little machines use a diode laser, some are supposedly 5W but
probably more like 2.5W.  Those will engrave on wood and leather, maybe
cut thin stock in several passes.

Yeah that is like the ones I’ve seen cheap. You can put a laser diode on them.
Look at Lightburn for the laser software. I think these low-end machines have a
GRBL arduino controller, very simple stuff, but powerful and gets the job done.

It will be fun.

There are now cheepchinee 3D printers on banggood and dx, $300 or less
for small ones that maybe have a 6in bed, you can put them right on a
desk, I am almost tempted to get one at some point just to play with it
and learn how to do it, then maybe build a good one like I did my CNC
router machine.  They sell all the bits too, really cheap.  Probably not
something for high-quality parts printing, but for random hacking and to

them is now open-source, and free software.

I bought a little 12x12 solid state diode laser engraver a couple years
ago, used it a bit but the software was crap, now there is much better
software that will control these little machines as well as my 60W big

Re: [MBZ] 3D Printer

2018-12-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Dan:

https://www.thingiverse.com/

Is the place to find ready-to-print files.

Autodesk has a free software called 123d design that you can use to design your
own items.

Most use PLA filament to start with, it prints easily but has a low melting
point (not suitable for automotive) and is not very strong. ABS is stronger and
suitable for higher temperatures, but is fussier to print and emits unpleasant
fumes.

I have settled on PETG for my default material. It prints pretty well, is
stronger than PLA, and survives temperatures in the passenger compartment of a
car.

I get my supplies from the River of Big Wimmen.

My printer is a Qidi, it's an open source design with a heated bed and dual
nozzles. I have added a glass bed and use hairspray to ensure good bend
adhesion.

The software that creates the machine instructions from the STL files is called
a "slicer" there are several free slicers available, but I have opted for the
Simplify 3D commercial slicer.

Subject: [MBZ] 3D Printer

I now have access to a Creality Ender-3 3D printer. I know nothing about this
thing but plan on learning. Looks like it prints using a filament.

There were discussions recently in one of these groups about 3D printing and an
online repository of files for Mercedes parts. Can someone forward that
information to me?

Also, if anyone here is doing any 3D printing, I would love to know where the
best resources are online. I’ll be doing some googling, of course, but t would
be nice to have some direction from someone who has gone before me…

Thanks!

Good luck! From what I understand it is complicated and there is a real
learning curve. I participate in a metal working forum that was
initially about lathes and milling machine work etc but seems to have
evolved into a forum about these printers. I don't have one and have no
intention of acquiring one any time soon but I continue to read most of it.
