Re: [MBZ] AC Leak

2016-11-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Replaced a bunch of O-rings yesterday, everything I could get to without a
major undertaking. Still leaked down to around 20"-25” Hg after 30-45 minutes.

I replaced the receiver dryer, charged the system with R134a and used the
Cliplight sealer that saved the 500 evaporator. 24 hours later it’s still
making ice cubes. I’ll continue to watch it to see if it leaks down, but
previously it would be dead by now so I guess I had a leak somewhere and the
compressor shaft seal is intact.

I went back and looked in my purchase inspection notes and saw that the PO said
it would leak down every season, not completely but enough that it would need a
can of refrigerant to make it cold again, so maybe it’s the leak that he was
experiencing and it just got worse…

It will probably work OK. I decided to get one of the high end

I’m sure I’ll find them as soon as the new ones arrive.

And Kaleb, this is the leak detector I got:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P90BKOG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Seems to work pretty well. I tasked it with a “sniff” from the supply line at
the can to see how it reacted and to set the sensitivity, then cleared it out
and went at it. I did notice that if you block off the end of the probe it
will go off, so if you’re poking around in an area you can’t see into you could
get a false positive. I was definitely getting hits at and around the plate
where the two lines attach to the rear of the compressor, so I’m comfortable
that the leak is in this area. I don’t think it’s the original compressor, but
if it is I can understand why the O rings would have failed in this area. I ran
it over all of the lines and fittings that I could reach and got nothing
anywhere else.

I’m going to replace the O rings on the compressor fittings, install a new
receiver dryer, then pull it down and check for leaks. If it holds vacuum at
that point I’m calling it done and charging.

You can find complete sets for a specific application for around $15.00 or
less. You can also buy the individual O rings, but I figure it can’t hurt to
have the whole set. About the only thing you might not need is the big seal/O
ring for the manifold on the compressor if one is used.

I would add that this is a native R-134a system, not a conversion. Also, low
side pressures did come up to the 30s when I added refrigerant, but dropped
when I closed the service valve to the can. I would assume this is due to the
low charge?

Re: [MBZ] AC Leak

2014-09-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here's what it was doing this morning, with an ambient in the low 80s:

Low side was at or near zero, high side was around 150. I put about half a can
in the system and got bubbles, but it was cooling slightly. Low side barely
came up, but high side remained at 150.

I left it at that, as I'm probably going to take it to someone to troubleshoot.

Interesting enough, I did notice that the low side service valve was bubbling
when I was putting the cap back on.

Based on this I don't think I have anything catastrophic going on - it didn't
leak down completely over a week's time, so I'm suspecting a leaky valve or a
bad O-ring maybe. Not sure how to interpret the pressures I was seeing, though.

Thanks to all who commented. Any other observations are welcome.

Dan

Yes, get a sniffer, they can make quick diagnosis easy, especially a leaky

Always suspect the high side service valve. For some reason the
"standard" quick-connect valves are anything but on the high side, and
I've resorted to getting adjustable depth connectors on my hose set.

It's very very easy to damage the Schroeder valve in the high side
fitting if the hose set plunger is too long, and every conversion
fitting I've seen (along with factory ones) is a different operating
depth. I've wrecked a few myself.

That said, you need to check all the high side (read hot) o-rings and
lines, the one between the condenser and receiver/dryer is prone to
failure, there are four 0-rings on the receiver/drying and the ones on
the expansion valve tend to fail as well.

UV dye is a great tool.

Drop some UV dye in it, or an oil recharge with some in it.

If it's the evaporator, you'll (eventually) see it around the condensate
drains. Regardless, you'll have a good idea of where to look.

I wouldn't be surprised to find a leaky service valve, especially the high side
one.
