Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
$800?!? Dude, this is the Northwest, and don't forget that I converted the car over to run on biodiesel, and have the sticker to prove it. This baby's going up on CL and Ebay, and I'm not settling for less than $6K! It's not just biodiesel ready, it's already living the dream, baby! Yeee hawww, it gets 40mpg, lasts a million miles, and runs on boiled organic goat piss. It's a sure-fire granola magnet. I can't lose! btw: I'm on crack, again. Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
Hahahahahahaha! It's amazing the claims of MPG and of money spent to convert to biodiesel when all it takes is viton fuel lines and only when running B100. One is better off hunting in the Southwest or just about anywhere other than the rust belt for a good MB diesel at a reasonable price. Kevin in Hillsboro Oregon 1973 220D project, biodiesel ready and probably has at least a million miles on it
Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
Larry - as long as the glow cycle works OK, and the engine starts right up on 1 or 2 compression strokes, I'd leave the GPs as they are. My 2.5 (1990) still has the original glow plugs and injectors, and they work just fine after 221k miles. A good Italian tune-up once in a while wouldn't hurt, either. Bring it out to V.I.R. the next time the Washington section holds an event there! But I would strongly recommend switching all the lubes to synthetic (Mobil1/Delvac1(truckSUV)) as soon as you can get to it. With proper care, you should be good to go for at least another 100k miles, probably much more if the service previously done was done well! Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
A nice diesel with under 100K miles for $8K is a rare find. It's a lot better than my $100 junker that's not going anywhere yet. Ah, but is it 80 _times_ better? Probably not, and to lots of us that is a factor. It's nice when you can afford the best ride possible (relatively speaking), but many must (and may) be happy with the best _valued_ ride possible. All part of the rich pageant, so to speak. Few would be all that happy with the steaming pile that is the $100 Frankenheap, yet to me a large part of its charm is the fact that it only cost $100 in the first place. (To be fair I've probably put another $200 into it since, not counting enhancements like the lighting and preheating system.) It's great fun knowing you've already put more into it in fuel than in capital expenditure. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
One thing I'm curious about. Air bags are critical to surviving an accident - my wife lived because of the air bag she had when she was in a wreck last Oct - but I'm not sure how you *know* they're still ready and willing to fire should the need arise. Does the car do a self test of the air bag to make sure it's working? The SRS system self-tests at each start, but obviously the test can only do so much. It does test the continuity of the squibs, at least. But whether or not they'll go BANG when they need to? That's an open-loop question. But I believe they're rated for 15 years, and probably will work well beyond that. At 99k miles the GPs might be getting long in the tooth. What's the best way to test them? Resistance? what value should they have? 0.6 ohms for the mid-80's ones. -- Jim
