I assume a large item would drop the temp when it first enters the oven and the oven would need to recover to the 425 needed. So I think heat recovery time is more critical than max high temp. You need to get the metal part itself, not the air around it, to curing temp for the duration of the cure time. If the part weighs 20 pounds, it will take a while. Powder coating wheels probably takes a lot longer than ceramic coating pistons. Mitch.

Hmm... What temperature do you need it at? I've got an oven sitting in my barn that works other than the normal range of the thermostat. i.e. it'll still hold like 700F for the clean cycle... Probably not much use for most things. I think I'm gonna have to chuck it... You need a *really* hot oven for a good pizza, it's not unheard of for people to override the cleaning cycle lockout on their home ovens to get the temperature into that range. Commercial pizza deck ovens run at about 600 or more, the convection/conveyor style (which IMO produce an inferior pizza) are a little cooler. My gas oven at home has a digital thermostat, it will go to 550 which is just barely adequate for a good homemade pizza if you use a pizza stone. I've not tried the cleaning cycle trick, myself. Re: [MBZ] DIY Powdercoating
Then the next thing would probably be to defeat the oven lock. Otherwise I'm guessing that pizza would be good and crispy since you'd have to put it in before it reached that temp and couldn't check it and you'd have to wait until the oven cooled down before it would let you open the door.. Hi Levi, I am not certain of the exact temp needed but I do know it must be an electric oven or it will explode. Is your oven electric? If nothing else tin price is up and that old oven is actually worth a couple bucks at the scrapyard. I bet a toaster oven would work for really small parts and practicing. Ahh, sounds like the powdercoating is flammable, or otherwise gets that way in an enclosed heated area... Yeah, probably just a couple bucks though. Some guy stopped by last weekend looking for scrap. I may make him up a pile of stuff, just doesn't quite seem worth the hassle to me if someone is willing to take it for free. AAAhhh, I kind of understood what you meant, but I was thinking you meant to defeat it so that you could take the oven to temps above what the cleaning cycle was meant for... This makes more sense... I see a host of old stoves for free on CL and am sure you could shove one in the garage with a huge extension cord to your dryer plug in. Bound to be able to reach at least 500* for a few hours as needed. Also will not upset SWMBA by baking your own wheels and brownies out there. On May 25, 2007, at 1:23 AM, Peter T. Could easily make up a box and use stove elements and oven control too. Have seen that sort of thing in electric motor rewind shops. They bake the rebuilt motor over night to cure the varnish type stuff on the wire if I recall correctly. Re: [MBZ] DIY Powdercoating
Levi, Where I take my scrap(Champion's in Lodi) I am getting over $100 per ton for junk cars stuffed full of old appliances and suchIf you have alot and a reasonable way to haul it it's worthwhile. If not, like you said, just best to give it away for the convenience. Keep an eye out for catalytic converters and set them aside, they are worth very good money and can make a load of scrap pay pretty well if you can get 3 or 4 as the smallest ones are bringing $35 as long as the honeycomb is intact. Copper is paying well over $1 if not $2 a pound now as well. Pretty easy to come up with a couple hundred bucks worth of junk in a big hurry.
