Those vids are still on Utube, a new comes out maybe once a week and
they are still quite good.  He also does a shop walkaround occasionally

Read the instructions and go from there. The longer you can let the stuff soak
in under hot conditions, the better. When it’s done, you’ll be concerned
because the feel is weird. You can use the Prestine Clean to knock it down, or
just let it flash off, which it will do over time.

2024-01-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
They’re all pretty good (Leatherique, Griots, Zymöl) as the results are pretty
much the same. Leatherique does require a bit more effort the first time if you
do it right, the others offer instant gratification.

George (Leatherique) is still kicking, as far as I know. I used to talk to him
regularly, but I haven’t done so in a couple of years.

When it comes to detailing, a lot of it comes down to personal preference.
Whatever you’re the most comfortable using and it gets the results you want, go
with it!

I have been using Groit's Leather 3 in 1 product with some success. I have
a Ford F350 with the King Ranch full leather interior, and with Arizona
heat and sun, the leather takes a harsh beating, so it needs regular
treatment.
The Groit's product seems to work, but with Arizona sun, the leather gets
baked quickly, so regular treatment is required.
There may be better products, Groit's is available at local FLAPS, so my
choice [for now].

I like the products made by Zymol. The car polish smells like a floral
bouquet. The leather cleaner is very gentle yet effective. Sold at

I’m not criticizing, by any means, just pointing out that they’re clearly
offshore. Please be sure to let the list know when they arrive and what your
observations are as far as the fit/finish and quality. We really need some
reasonably priced alternatives for the W211 and similar vintage cars that have
the perforated panels that make them so easy to rip.

matched full skins, deliver them to a better than decent upholstery shop,
have them make a set of patterns, then make and install seat covers..
I would call this a fair deal.
Also, noted. They state they can make and supply other model Mercedes cover
sets.. worth adding to my bucket list, I think.. Even if pricing is more
for "one off" set for a different model..

Re: [MBZ] Leather is in emaculant condition - 1993 500SEL - 94k miles - $9, 500

2022-07-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I had Tarek’s old 1995 S500 coupe, and the only issue i had with it was the
evaporator was starting to leak before it got totaled. I used some sealant and
it was holding pressure, and did so for about 6-8 months before it was
destroyed. I suspect it would have gotten worse over time, however.

W140s are like R129s. Avoid the “pre-facelift” models, which would be from
1991-1995. Why?

Wiring harness issues (likely resolved by now)
AC evaporator issues
Fuel systems are not as refined
Facelift have better (6 speed) transmissions

1996 and later are good, and are pretty bulletproof. One of my former W140s is
still on the road at over 325k with no major repairs.

Re: [MBZ] Leather seat restoration

2022-04-12 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I used connolly leather spray dye when restoring the green interior (dash,
seats, and door panels) on my long gone '69 280SE 3.5 coupe. The results
were quite presentable, although IIRC it took forever to dry past the
sticky phase.

2015-10-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Nearly 40 years ago, I did a lot of business at a foreign car specialty
parts house that had a "lifetime warranty". The parts were always a bit
more expensive and the line I always got from the owner was "well, it has a
lifetime warranty"..

One day, after laying a couple thousand dollars on the counter I ask him..
"Exactly what does it mean when you say 'Lifetime Warranty' " ... His
reply, with a straight face and a stern look, no hesitation, was :

" If you ever bring it back, I'll kill you" . We laughed.. but I've
never forgotten it because it seems to be the true meaning behind the
"warranty" clause.

Full service repair and some custom leatherwork. I used to take
boots there, some 300 miles each way for me. Good folks. Family run.

Bells in Beatrice, NE is out of business, or i'd recommend that too.

Probably is a good shop in Red Wing MN, but since I've only been
there on Sundays, I don't know for sure.

I'd bet Max can find ya a good shop in Italia too. But that means a
long trip...hard to do over the phone.

BTW, mention of SWMBO's purse reminds me: My SWMBO has a Coach
leather purse purchased in 1972 in prep for her 2-to-3-week visit
with me in Thailand while I was flying BUFF missions to Vietnam.
The trim around the top is getting slightly worn, and she asked me
yesterday to try to find where she might get some repairs done to
it. It's her favorite purse, and she'd like to keep it "on the
road." It still looks good; just needs some additional TLC around
tope edge, much like our MB's.

I checked Coach site and found lots of em at $495 ea. (paid $40 in
'72) but no comment about repairs; did get a customer care # she'll
try tomorrow.

Anybody know good leather repair shop for such repairs, in case
Coach can't, or won't, handle it?

Yes, indeed! When I was a grad student, Shirley and I checked into a motel
in the west-Texas town of Alpine to be greeted by a moth that was about 4
inches long and had a wingspan of about 6 inches. The room was dimly lit
and I thought it was a humming bird at first.

Re: [MBZ] LEATHER SEAT MAINT QUESTION

2010-02-08 Thread E M
I use Eagle One leather care, and it's done a great job for me over the
years. I've never really had to use a product to bring back leather, just
maintain it, so not sure how it would be and bringing something that's wore
back. I've used neats foot before, I think my Lexol or something, but never
cared for it. I found it made dark leather spot easy if it got any water on
it. Just my experience.

2010-02-07 Thread Redghost
Take a look at Cadillac boot and shoe care. I find it is superb at
keeping leather items in top condition. Does not do miracles, but
does keep it good as when first applied. Best to give the item a coat
when brand new, or as close as possible and it remains looking that
good.

But, after reading more about it, including in the maintenance of
riding leather boots. it appears that most formulas of Neatsfoot oil
contain thinning agents like kerosene. That's disappointing.

THe 28 year old leather seats in my 300SD are in pretty good shape but
are beginning to dry out even with annual leatherique applications.

The problem is, the finish on the top of the leather keeps the
leatherique from penetrating, except in cracks and wear spots.

What seems to work very well is applying neat's foot oil to the
unfinished back sides of the leather, which I've done with great
results indeed to the top of the rear seat, and the skirts of both
front and rear seats. THese areas are now very supple, even though
the seatback especially had gotten very hard and brittle. The leather
there soaked up a huge amount of oil--three heavy brush applications.
I'd now like to do the same to the backrests and seats themselves, but
don't know how to get at them as the padding is in the way. Has
anyone ever done this? Can the padding be removed and replaced? Or
would it all have to be resewn, which I'm reluctant to do for fear of
further damaging the leather?

Thanks!

Did they make gray MB Tex similar or matching the gray leather for the later

I'm not sure, but as much as I like BMW's, I've never cared for their

don't last, just feel like they wouldn't last to me.

Re: [MBZ] leather seats W109

2007-08-06 Thread Tom Hargrave
Complete leather seat covers are expensive.

Stop by your local upholstery shop & have them take a look. I had the seat
portion of a 300D re-done a number of years ago. They were able to re-use
the side panels & the skirt & I believe the cost was $185.00.

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] leather seats W109

2007-08-06 Thread Peter Frederick
Took the old ones off, made patterns, sewed them up (hehe).

The side bolsters have a foam pad, best to use 1/2" folded over. The
cushion "ribs" are cotton filled in the orignials, you can use that or
do what I did and put in 1" polyurethane foam, it's softer and rides
MUCH better.

I sew the center sections flat, the sew a pleat in the backing (best to
use woven polyester here, cotton sometimes deteriorates in contact with
leather) to make the space for the pads.

Make piping by sewing a strip around a weed eater cord.

Worst part is sewing the apron to the seat and the sides to the back
with a normal sewing machine -- if you have access to an upholstery
machine, it will be much easier.

New covers are $500 to $750 per front seat.

Re: [MBZ] Leather care products

Thanks Dan.

The leather car is garaged and most always out of the sun, so it's pretty
much just maintaining it at it's current level. However, since the 300E
came along, the Benz bug has really bit, so maybe there is an older car in
the future for me that will require such a product to bring back ages
leather. I'll be sure to tuck this message away. :-)

someone told me recently, that the fuel mileage of a 2.5 manual is not
appreciably different than that of a 2.2 manual?

I believe this myself. If we can ever get our 190D manual 2.5 deployed
we'll have some more numbers. But IIRC it's 35-42, depending on
conditions.

I see what you're saying. I kinda realized that after i had sent him my
email with a bunch of questions. I realized that, hey, even if the engine is
bad, I get a replacement and still am not that bad off. And I've gotten the
2.2 five speed I'm seeking.

And thanks, Clay for the link to the decent looking 190D. I am pretty
insistend on a manny though. I do wonder how accurate it is, however, what
someone told me recently, that the fuel mileage of a 2.5 manual is not
appreciably different than that of a 2.2 manual?

You're right - it was a rarely chosen but available option.

I realize it's not very common. Just wondering.

Apparently they do. I sent them a request for a price and a sample.

He told us he wanted leather seats of a particular color and this will be
sort of a surprise, so we better just get him the seat covers.

www.leatherseats.com quoted about $650 on their website, so if World
Upholstery isn't a lot higher, the price will be okay with his wife who is
buying them.

Based on pictures of cars for sale I've seen, I think we're missing the
obvious way to tell:

- If it looks good, it's MB-Tex.
- If it's cracked, shredded, and/or ripped up, it's leather.

Larry,

The easiest place I know of to look is on the material that fills the gap in
the rear arm rest. Look on the back side of it to see the raw leather or
the distinct appearance of molded plastic. Of course the car could be a
mixture of the two.

The pattern that the tex interiors use and the pattern of leather are
different (at least thru '87). I have a leather and a few tex 201s.

I've attached a picture of a car with leather (driver's side) and tex
front seats.

2006-02-23 Thread Chuck Landenberger
The hole pattern in leather has smaller holes and "bolster" area is
smoother and will show more creases/cracks..

MBTex has larger holes and the bolsters have some pattern and no
creases, generally.

Not very scientific, but best I can come up with.. Since I
didn't do the "cigarette" test.

Re: [MBZ] Leather Vs MB-Tex and Proper Oil Level

2006-02-23 Thread Werner Fehlauer

Larry -
Yes, the proper level for the oil is below the max mark, probably about 1/2
to 3/4 way between the top and bottom marks. Take Marshall's advice,
though, and look at the level after the car engine has been off for several
hours - the Mobil1 does stick to internal engine parts, and does take some
time to flow to the sump!

As for tex vs. leather, a clue is found in the code for the interior -
usually, a 1xx number is MB-tex, and a 2xx number is leather. You can check
out all the codes in the build sheet (available from MBUSA or the dealer, if
it isn't with the car documents), and also should be on the metal plate in
front of the radiator (at least the exterior color is embossed there). The
codes were listed sometime back by Dan Landiss, and I think I can find the
link if you don't have it.
