Well I had my new ML350 health checked today at the Mercedes dealer. On bad thing was found and I didn't really see it when I looked at the undercarriage. They say the seals of the oil cooler is leaking and is draining down the side of the engine to the undercarriage panels. I have looked at several YOUTUBE videos and it is a bit of work to complete. The oil cooler is located in the vee between the heads and many things on top of the engine need to be removed down to the 2 intake manifolds. Apparently this a weak point and the oil seal begin to flatten and leak due the higher operating temperature of the engine. So I will not be doing any long trips until this gets fixed. Mercedes wants $3600 do complete the repair, seals are only very small part of the cost. Between completing and engine swap on BMW 5 series and changing a starter on BMW X3 which required disconnecting the intake manifold, and replacing head gaskets, I think I should be able to complete the repair. Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes
The issue is not the lights per se (although the lighting nanny will not like the extra power draw and will want to tell you there are various faults if you plug stuff directly into the light circuits). For my 163 ML I got this thing that basically sees the voltage going to the various tail lights (via some of those clamp-on connectors) then sends power to the trailer lights through separate power so it is not in the nanny circuits. I'm sure there is a similar item for whatever flavor his ML is. The biggest issue is that the brake and stability control sensors will feel the trailer back there and the nannies will go insane trying to compensate for it. That is why you need to get the towing nanny and get it working in the overall system. The 163 does not have this "feature" so it is kinda indifferent to the hitch and load, other than the lights. --FT On 1/17/22 2:06 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote: For my Volvo I got an adapter from etrailer.com that plugs into the factory harness at the taillight pigtails. I have also seen adapters that clamp on to the wiring and detect current by induction. I'd try to avoid splicing directly into the wires, either with cutting/soldering or "quick splice" crimp-ons that pierce the wire insulation. It has many new features that the X3 or my previous 1995 Mercedes E300D didn't have, so it will be a bit of a learning curve. I will get a nice initial drive in it, with a 120 mile trip North this coming Sunday to visit with my mother in law. Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes
Maybe. Sometimes in a photo, shadows and reflections can look like dents -- that said, if you're shopping for 8-10 year old cars it is going to be rare to find one without a ding or scratch somewhere. Good question about the engine cover, maybe removed for the photo but certainly would be a question for the seller. Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes
Price seems high. If you aren't set on a large SUV, the 250GLK Bluetec is awesome - reliable and highly fuel efficient. It might be adequate in size to suit your needs. They are mfd. in Germany rather than AL, which IMO is a huge plus. Re: [MBZ] Looking for My next Mercedes
I can only speak to the 2011 W164 ML diesel. bought one for my wife at the time, it was a nice car, very entertaining what with a very large torque rating. She is still driving it as of a few months ago so from that standpoint it seems to have held up OK. I think I managed to instill in her the idea of ongoing maintenance, oil changes and such, so I presume she is sticking to some routine in that regard. The 164 is more civilized than the 163 but might be a bit less capable in terms of "truckish" behavior -- the 163 is very solid in that regard, off-road and towing, and the 722.6 trans is a solid unit. The newer 722.9 version seems more problematic and more finicky but regular fluid changes will probably help it behave. I know nothing about the newer models you are looking at, other than seeing them around. --FT On 1/5/22 8:47 PM, Robert Massmann via Mercedes wrote: I am starting to look for my next Mercedes as I had sold my 1995 E300D because is was getting harder to maintain and had close to 500,000 miles.
