Re: [MBZ] M112 Breather Cover Reseal

I want to say the valve covers themselves can leak, as can the oil filter
housing and the oil cooler (if it has one) can leak.

Subject: [MBZ] M112 Breather Cover Reseal

Youngest son just made a trip to Denver and back and was complaining about oil
consumption, which, I thought, was excessive. The car (2002 W210/E320) has
about 145k on the clock and has been well cared for. It's been in the family
since it had about 91k on the clock. Has always run well, been trouble free, no
issues and only a few repairs. M1 0W-40 is the staple oil, always has been.

Based on what I could glean, he's using about 1-1/2 to 2 quarts every 1,000
miles. No obvious smoke or leakage that I have noted in the past, nor the
telltale smell of burnt oil from it dripping on the exhaust. It got one of the
"updated" oil filler caps with the bigger handle when it was new.

I do know that the breather covers are leaking on the valve covers, so that's
the first thing I'm going to do. Other than OE valve cover seals, I presume I
use the Mercedes sealant for the breather covers? It's the stuff in the white
tube with the black plastic plunger, 003989982010 I believe?

If anyone else here has resealed breather covers on an M112 have anything to
share, I'm all ears. I'm sure it's a simple job, just want to know if there are
any things to avoid or watch out for.

Thanks!

A follow-up on this:

I talked to Jono (Jonathan @ Blue Ridge Mercedes) and the first thing he said
to do was bump the oil viscosity to 15W-50 (Mobil1). I’ve used the usual 0W-40
in it since I’ve owned the car or it’s been in my stable.

It’s been running since June with 15W-50, and has about 3,000 miles on the
clock since then and there’s been little to no oil consumption. No dripping or
anything on the garage floor, so for now I’m leaving well enough alone.

On a related note, the 2003 ML350 is now throwing CEL because(I think) the EGR
tube is clogged. It’s about the right miles for it to be happening. Not a bad
job, but sort of fiddly, especially if you’ve never done it before. It’s one a
few bucks in parts for the seal/gasket, the rest is R&R and cleaning.

Re: [MBZ] M112 Breather Cover Reseal

2023-09-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Angie's car likes a heavier oil. For the BEW engine VW spec includes 5w30 or
5w40. Her car will leak a quart of 5w30 every 1000 miles regular as tiddles.
With 5w40 it leaks/burns a quart in about 8,000, quite acceptable for an 18
year old car I think.

I was pretty surprised at the difference. I totally understand and expected
consumption to decrease, but not that much.

Guess I ought to look at using it in the 98 W210 wagon, as it’s approaching
220k but it doesn’t use anywhere near that much oil. The 2002 W210 sedan hasn’t
quite reached 150k.

2023-09-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'd consider 5w40 too, back when I was trying to get a 240D to start in the
cold I found it to be the best balance of "easy to start" and "easy to keep in
the engine".

I changed the oil in my mother's 2014 Jeep Cherokee the other day. It takes
0w20, dang stuff is like water. Fortunately the process of changing it is
pretty easy. The skid plate even has a little door to get the filter out.

I pretty much run everything on 15w40 now days. On the breather covers there
are tiny holes in then that you have to clean out that IIRC can cause increased
oil consumption. Also, if the seal that goes from the air intake to the valve
body gets hard and somehow supposedly caused increased oil consumption.

Yes I don’t really get this m112s that use a lot of oil. Our 05 seems to use a
lot of oil. I think I have 15w40 in it now and perhaps it slowed it down but it
still using oil. I’m wondering if these things need to have valve seals
replaced. Seems like I looked into that once and concluded it might be a swine
of a job.

Re: [MBZ] M112 Breather Cover Reseal

2023-09-11 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The breather issues are well-known and documented, and despite the small sample
I’ve worked with/owned, there doesn’t seem to be any consistency of when you
can expect it to occur. It seems like the breather tube that goes into the back
of the engine will clog up around 100k or thereabouts, but the rest of the
system doesn’t seem to clog up on a predictable basis. I suspect that’s
probably due to differences in how the engine has been driven, the type of oil,
etc., etc.

Youngest son just made a trip to Denver and back and was complaining about
oil consumption, which, I thought, was excessive. The car (2002 W210/E320)
has about 145k on the clock and has been well cared for. It's been in the
family since it had about 91k on the clock. Has always run well, been
trouble free, no issues and only a few repairs. M1 0W-40 is the staple
 oil, always has been.

Based on what I could glean, he's using about 1-1/2 to 2 quarts every
1,000 miles. No obvious smoke or leakage that I have noted in the past,
nor the telltale smell of burnt oil from it dripping on the exhaust. It
got one of the "updated" oil filler caps with the bigger handle when it
 was new.

I do know that the breather covers are leaking on the valve covers, so
that's the first thing I'm going to do. Other than OE valve cover seals, I
presume I use the Mercedes sealant for the breather covers? It's the stuff
in the white tube with the black plastic plunger, 003989982010 I believe?

If anyone else here has resealed breather covers on an M112 have anything
to share, I'm all ears. I'm sure it's a simple job, just want to know if
there are any things to avoid or watch out for.

 Thanks!
