Thats a decent although not outstanding price. Ought to be able to get a 5 ton
for that price and its more than twice as much truck. Difficult for most people
to own though...
MA is a bastard about owning a big truck, dually trucks require commercial
registration with yearly medical checks. Can't imagine what hoops they'd make
you jump through for a 6x6.

I bought a set of hard top straps from them, mainly because I was too lazy to
look for something elsewhere. Very nice, well constructed, not bad for the
price. ($50)

Everything else I looked at in their catalog was froo-froo stuff or grossly
overpriced, I thought.

$34,500 in 1986 equals $68,225.95 now (if you can believe the
gummint---see http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm). Base
price for the 2010 C63 AMG is $57,350---close enough.

A bound collection of '80s Road & Track Mercedes reviews I have ("Road
& Track on Mercedes: 1981-1987") lists the base sticker price of the
300E as almost the same as the 2.3-16 (and there were only two options
available for the 300E in the first couple of years IIRC---leather vs
MB-Tex and 5-speed vs automatic), so all you guys driving $1000 124s
can feel pretty smug at the 98% discount you got. ;)

An '85 500SEL's base price was $52,200 in '86 dollars, or $105,147.59
now. Assuming a gray-market '82 500SEL would have gone for about the
same amount, I feel even smugger about the 99.5% discount I got when I
paid $500 for mine.

(Yes, I know this is silly, doesn't account for depreciation, etc. etc.)

I doubt I will ever buy a new vehicle again, short of winning the lottery.
Spending $30k-$40k for a vehicle and having that monthly payment is just
something I don't want to be burdened with.  Just doesn't make a lot a sense to
me, especially when you figure in the depreciation.

Yep, the plain jane pickup trucks are 25k, with few options.  Get some options,
a diesel, something like that and you are over 50k.  Get a Tahoe or something
with nav, dvd etc and your are close to 60

Yeah, the C300 was lighter, more like 3500lb. But that's still too heavy.
Heavier than a W123, about as heavy as a new Saab 9-5 (which is a pretty big car)

I think the Kaleb household needs one of those Freightliner Mercedes vans.
The dealer I pass everyday has the MB window van.
I wonder if it has a diesel engine.
The other one at the dealer I like is the Mercedes Hummer - whatever
the name of that baby is... Not Hummer really, but the boxy all
terrain little toy that the wealthy-class can afford, but probably not
enough toys for them to desire SUV.

The Cheep class MB are what the yuppie larvae (wanna-bees) lease. They
are all over. A few years ago I thought about picking up an off-lease
one for SWMBO, cause A C230 mit Kompressor could be had for $10 K.

I saw a 66 Frod pickup yesterday, driving around. It looked all
original, even the paint and hubcaps. If I could find something like
that, and put in an OM603 or even a 606, if they don't have to have
too much electonics hangin on, that would make a nice vehicle for
hauling and towing. Take out the junk frod seat, and put in a couple
of Volvo seats, or better, Bostrom air-ride seats, and it would even
be comfortable for long trips. I have been thinking a mid-sixties
Detriot pickup, or better yet, one ton with a low ratio rear end,
would be way better than any of this new crap.

65 to 67 frod pickups had thick sheet metal, as did the dodges of
about the same time frame. But I'd take 64 chevy pickup just for
sentimentality if I could find one that was not rusty and I had
the $$.

I was shocked at the price tag on these new cheap class cars. WOW.
What I was seeing was low 40's prices on those.

Wow! a 2 ton C class! That was what a 60s full size big block car
weighed! like a grand prick 383 or an Impala 396 or 427 Or a
chrysler or a lincoln or a caddy. 2 tons in a c class is putting a
lot of metal in a little package. A vw or such was about 1800 lb.
(course, a 6.3 IS a big block, and that accounts for a few hundred
extra lbs) I bet workin on a 6.3 in a cheap class (like
changing spark plugs) is a ton of fun!

My Cheap Class had a sticker price of $34,500 or so, in 1986
dollars. That W201 might have been a performance model at the time,
but I bet a $40k new one would blow its 167hp doors off. It looks
like #34k gets you 228hp (C300 Sport) and $40k gets you 268hp (C350
Sport). The C63 AMG is probably the inflation adjusted price match
for my 2.3-16v, but the C63 weighs 1000lb more (3924lb!!!) and only
makes 451hp.

Re: [MBZ] New Mercedes

2010-04-11 Thread Dieselhead
uh, ever looked at the price tags on plain old Detriot iron? I
looked at a Chuby PEEckup last week. Sticker was a very
Mercedes-like $50K. I told the sales lizard that for $50k, I would
buy a REAL Mercedes Benz. Crazy!

The Cheep class MB are what the yuppie larvae (wanna-bees) lease.
They are all over. A few years ago I thought about picking up an
off-lease one for SWMBO, cause A C230 mit Kompressor could be had for
$10 K.

I saw a 66 Frod pickup yesterday, driving around. It looked all
original, even the paint and hubcaps. If I could find something
like that, and put in an OM603 or even a 606, if they don't have to
have too much electonics hangin on, that would make a nice vehicle
for hauling and towing. Take out the junk frod seat, and put in a
couple of Volvo seats, or better, Bostrom air-ride seats, and it
would even be comfortable for long trips. I have been thinking a
mid-sixties Detriot pickup, or better yet, one ton with a low ratio
rear end, would be way better than any of this new crap.

The material has two modes - if you apply pressure or deform it, it
will generate electricity, per the article. However, if you apply
electricity to it, it will deform, or move. Hence, you can use it to
very quickly open and close a valve

These

Subject: [MBZ] New Mercedes Diesel

Hello,
Was reading about the new Diesel on the MB website and they talk
about
new "piezoelectric fuel injectors" which contribute to the efficiency of
the
engine.

I'm trying to understand how the piezoelectric concept helps the
injectors? I read Wikipaedia and it says Piezioelectric is "the ability
of
some materials (notably crystals and certain ceramics) to generate an
electric potential" and while I understand what they are saying (sort
of),
I can't grasp how it helps fuel injectors.

Previous injectors were controlled by electrical pulses from the ECU
as
I understand it - but I can't see how the Piezio effect would be better.

Can someone provide a easily understood paragraph or 2?

BTW, the new diesel is now available in the E Class, ML, GL and R
class.
While I cannot afford a new MB perhaps in a few years I can find a nice
used
one.

Thx -
