Re: [MBZ] New addition to the fleet: 1995 Mercedes E300 DieselSpecial Edition
Max: The vacuum pump on my 95 E300D disintegrated. So the pumps from that year must still be vulnerable. And Marshall was correct. There is a cam mounted on the front of the fuel injection pump that drives the vacuum pump. It is kind of like a wobble disk. The surface of that cam was trashed on mine. I can't tell if the vacuum pump ruined the cam or the cam ruined the vacuum pump. But the entire assembly around the cam had to be replaced. Can't buy just the cam. And it requires some engine disassembling to do that. I don't know if I would recommend this, but I pulled the entire engine with transmission. That way I could remove the oil pan and inspect around the oil pump, timing case etc. I found a few stray bearings inside. It was a sizable job. I used the opportunity to change ALL the fluids, inspect and replace lots of expendable parts. I wish I had replaced the motor mounts. I also was prepared to replace the timing chain, but the existing one was OK. I don't remember how many bearings are in that pump. But you can inspect the failed pump and figure out about how many bearings should fit in the races. Thank Kaleb, I'll bet it is unplugged as there was recent work on the fuel system. OK, now I've got two things to worry about. The oil pressure gauge seemed to be malfunctioning - it would peg at 3.0 BEFORE the engine was started, and stay there. Also, just read a Marshall post saying that if the pump fails on the OM60x engines, there is very likely damage to the cam face of the injection pump timer. Ned, Thanks, I'm really looking forward to getting this car sorted. When did the MB vacuum pumps finally get re-designed so that the parts don't fall into the engine? I was hoping before 1994 (when this car was built). If it has already dumped, how many ball bearings should I look for? How do I get them out? I'm thinking that raising the front of car and draining the oil at the plug may do it, and then pulling the oil level sensor if I want to fish around inside. The vacuum pump has failed. Try not to run the engine until you replace the pump. The pump has a lot of little ball bearings that often drop into the timing case and/or crank case when the pump fails. You'll love this car when you get it fixed up. It eases up on the throttle and applies the brake to the spinning wheel if necessary. It did not appear on diesels until they used the electronically controlled injection pump. I'm thinking that was 1999? Maybe 1998?
