I agree, Dropbox is a great service, but IIRC the original request was for software to "clone" a hard drive. Dropbox won't do that. Dropbox kicks butt. With my recent move and home sale, it has been a lifesaver due to it's ability to handle large files. I had an inspection report I had to get to my realtor that was far too big to send as an email attachment. I created a public file, emailed her the URL from Dropbox, and within minutes she had the file. I got more space since she signed up, too. I also used it to get copies of manuals to people who bought some of my woodworking equipment. I didn't have much trouble with setting it up, though I still have not figured out how to have it run automatically [or at least I am not sure]. I subscribe to a "deal of the day" web site where you routinely get something cheap, only to find out they are going to gouge you on shipping. The last time I was going to buy an HDMI cable that was $1-$2, I went through the purchase process to find that shipping was $14.95. So much for a cheap HDMI cable. Got my fingers crossed. Been using Amazon with good results until this last order. One item Amazon listed was from "Directsupercenter.com". The receipt Amazon sent showed a shipping and handling charge of $27.76 for four bottles of pills that weighed a few ounces each. After playing tag with Amazons computers while trying to let them know that a mistake had been made, I did find a support address for Direct Super Center. Got an email off to them today. The order for the Acronis disk from a different company looks like it has no problems and the Amazon customer reviews are very positive. Segate and Maxtor has the free edition of Acronis on their web sites, but for each you have to have one drive of that make on the computer you are using it on. Clonezilla works fine. I have used it when upgrading hard drives in various laptops. It can, for example, clone an internal drive, partitioned for Windows, Linux, and the "secret" emergency boot partition that most laptops have, to an external drive, growing and defragmenting the Windows partition along the way. Then swap the new external drive for the internal and the machine boots without a hitch, the only difference being more space. Free *and* Idiot-Proof/Plug-N-Play may be hard to find. Much of the good free software for Windows is written by techies for techies. If you want to get your hands a *little* dirty you can boot a linux live CD and use the 'dd' utility. dd does a byte-by-byte copy of one disk to another. So you could copy your internal hard drive to an attached drive, for example. Careful though, if you get the command parameters backwards you'll wipe your internal drive instead. Here's an web page that talks about how to do it. http://www.backuphowto.info/linux-backup-hard-disk-clone-dd On Fri, 29 Apr 2011 08:26 -0400, "Gerry Archer" wrote: > Can someone suggest a free disk cloning/imaging software program that's > idiot-proof/plug-n-play, > that only has to be loaded in a computer and an external drive and it does > its thing without > getting into a lot of technicalities? > > This would be for a laptop/ running Windows XP Home that doesn't have a copy > of Windows Backup. Re: [MBZ] OT: Backup software needed
Thanks, Douglas. Couldn't find an Acronis download that was free for more than 30 days. After that it costs about $50. Do you know of one? Gerry - From: "Douglas" I have used Acronis (Free version) several times and seems fine. This would be for a laptop/ running Windows XP Home that doesn't have a copy of Windows Backup. (Couldn't find a download for Windows XP Backup). Someone on another list suggested Clonezilla. What do you think?
