Just came across a par of DCM Time Frame 500s.

For you DCM fans out there, are these worth looking into?

Thanks,

Those look just like mine.  SWMBO thinks they are ugly, I tell her to
close her eyes and listen. ;)

Does she think these are ugly? I'll trade you a pair of my TF275s for your
 TWs.

I have a pair of those too!  (Or an outwardly identical model.)  Got
them for $100 also.  She thinks they're better looking but to my ear
they don't sound as good---the treble reproduction is shrill compared
to the Time Windows.

Just came across a pair buried in a CL listing.  The guy is asking $245, but if
I look at them and am satisfied, I would probably offer $200, maybe $180.

Thanks!

K in KLH was Henry Kloss who designed the Advents. Advent got bought or
something, and turned into Cambridge Soundworks and various other
incarnations. I have a pair of back channel Boston Acoustics speakers
that emerged, somehow, from all the mess. I have a small pair of BA
speakers I got at a flea market for nothing, that need new cones when I
get a roundtuit. Excellent speakers.

Heh.  Looked at the JBLs tonight.

Somebody replaced the woofers with some cheap stamped steel knock off speaker.
Popped on out and showed the owner.  I think he got scammed a while back.

Found a pair of JBL Decade L36s on CL.  Owner wants $225/pair and they need
surrounds.  He has the kit but hasn't gotten around to doing them.  I offered
him $175 with the kits and an inspection (gotta make sure the coils aren't
dragging since the surrounds are worn out.)  Waiting for a response...

No Time speakers around here

What's the price on the Marantz?  I have a 3300 preamp/control console
sitting on a shelf in the basement.  No idea what it's worth.

Anyone here know anything about BO, other than it's pricey?

It's Danish.

I always thought of them as style over substance. But as
they're very _high_ style, their lesser substance might still
be quite good, or not; I don't really know.

Personally it would not be my first choice. There's no doubt in
my mind that the high-end stuff of the 80's (when I was doing my
shopping) was stellar, and that if maintained/reconditioned would
satisfy any functional need I might have. (I still have my NAD
gear, but it's rarely powered on these days.)

My first stereo was Hitachi gear, and I slowly upgraded most of
it over time. The amp got upgraded to NAD early when the EPI A70
speakers were upgraded to DCM Time Frames, an excellent bang for
the buck whose only flaw was limited bass, which a subwoofer
(originally used with the A70's) corrects nicely. The subwoofer
is operated by my bought-new Richter Scale active crossover, and
a half-dead 100W power amp I bought from a roommate. (Didn't need
both channels, got it cheap.) Later at the thrift shop I found
the Nakamichi tape deck, and a matching NAD tuner. The
still-working $850 Kyocera CD player was retired in favor
of a Sony rotary CD changer.

The garage system, and the one in the music room, are old Luxman
receivers. The home theater system is more DCM Time Frames,
and DCM bookshelf speakers for sides. All driven by a Sony AV
receiver. (Seems I have a lot of Sony. Not my first choice,
but the AV receiver was free.)

2011-08-28 Thread LWB250
Tune or early solid state.  I don't have a preference, really.  As long as it's
got BIG coupling transformers and no hybrid ICs in it, it would be vintage
enough for me.

I like both the Marantz and the Fisher, although the Fisher is a tube unit and
is a little lower powered than the Marantz.  These are definitely what I am
looking for - the BO is going to go into one of the guest rooms, as I don't
want it as my primary unit.

I am familiar with BO, but it's from over 30 years ago.  Right after I got out
of school I worked for an industrial electronics firm that also had a retail
store that dealt in nothing but high end audio - Nakamichi, BO, Marantz,
Crown, etc.  I saw a lot of the stuff, but never really played with it or
looked closely, as it was so far out of my price range I knew I could never
afford it.  I recall the BO linear turntable - I always thought that was cool.
At the time I had a Pioneer rack unit with the whole line of rack mount
equipment - power amp, preamp, cassette deck, RT-909 reel to reel, you name it.
A lot of it was used stuff from my employer's trade-ins they took for the high
end stuff.

I still have plans for EV Eliminators and Altec A7s, but I'm not sure I'm going
to go that far with speakers.  Wasn't someone on here talking about some really
nice vintage speakers that were still available for reasonable prices?  That's
one area I'm going to need some recommendations and opinions, as my previous
speakers were spec built by me, based on my learnings from a Purdue University
course I audited on audio design.  I have the means in the near future to build
my own, but I really don't want to get into such an undertaking.

Thanks,

Dan

Here's some price history for you:
http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_nkw=dcm+time*_sacat=0LH_Complete=1_odkw=dcm+time+frame

A set of $200 Time Windows, especially TW-3, would be a good deal if all the
drivers/crossovers are still functional. How far away is Deltona?

At least you probably have the ability to rebuild a failed crossover, but those
Phillips woofers aren't all that reliable either, and they're becoming hard to
find used, and impossible to get new.

I wouldn't pay $200 for Time Frames myself, I've got about $80 plus maybe 6
gallons of gas invested in four TF275s. Two separate eBay purchases about a year
apart, the first just over $40, the second just under $40.
What he's asking is half of original MSRP for 20 year old speakers. The original
owner probably paid $300-400 for them.

Time Frames below TF500 don't seem to sell for real money. I have seen people
asking north of $200 for 500/600/700s, I forget which of those are supposed to
sound the best. The 250/275/350/400 were all budget stuff, under $500/pair when
new. Most TFs use the same woofers/tweeters as TWs, but don't have the same
'presence'.

These are a better deal than the 350s:
http://search.ebay.com/220841215856

Florida, Michigan, Texas and California seem to account for 2/3 of the better
DCM speakers I see on eBay. I never understood why Florida, they've got more DCM
auctions than Michigan, and the factory was up here.

I am not exaggerating when I say that my DCM Time Windows...
Best $100 I've ever spent (or probably ever will).

Buddy of mine has Magneplanar speakers, very little will beat
them for quality of sound. But they are very fussy about
installation, and really require much room behind them.
(Not rockers/rappers, just very accurate sound reproduction.)

I remember that the TW's were very good when they were
au courant, but beyond my budget at the time.

My TF500's were about $500 new, and were only beaten by
speaks costing about 2x that and up, of what I could audition.
I followed the rule of thumb of spending half the sound budget
on speakers, half of what remained on turntable/cartridge,
and the rest on the electronics.
