Yeah but then again with the slow dialup it would probably take
till next year to get done with the taxes that way. So far I seem
to have worked things more or less around to get win10 do it my
way. Or at least enough to at least use it for the taxes for now,
till they stop support for win10 probably in a couple of months
the way M$ seems to do things.

There is no "turn off updates" in win 10. You can turn off upgrades, but
upgrades are the large version changes. Like from 1511 to 1607.

Once you set the connection to metered you should effectively stop the
 normal updates from happening.

OK I got kind of sidetracked with this but the bottom line is that
disabling the update services seems to have worked. I've been able to
connect with the external modem and things seem to work except for the
connection sounds don't work and it doesn't show a connection speed or any
such notification at the bottom of the screen like with XP.

HAHAHAHA! :-D Sorry but that won't work.Even if the ISP will let
my modem stay on that long how much data would be transmitted at
about 5KB/sec? I'm thinking it would take the rest of my life. :-)
First I'll try going to the library and see what it does there. I
will also try Kyle's suggestion on the metered setting. That
should at least cut down on the number of updates. I'm thinking
that they will probably still do the critical security updates.

I'll see what happens.

No, you don't have to "get under the hood",
if you don't want to. It is what I use, and what I
install on machines for those who are not
computer literate.

If all you have is dial up, I can burn you
a dvd.

Manfred,

There is no "turn off updates" in win 10. You can turn off upgrades, but
upgrades are the large version changes. Like from 1511 to 1607.

Once you set the connection to metered you should effectively stop the
normal updates from happening.

I'm going to try this and see if it works for the dialup
connection cause that's where I need it. If it doesn't work there
then it won't help much. I'll keep looking there's got to be
something.

However I have some questions about win10. I seem to remember that there
was a way to keep it from updating all the time. I tried getting on line
with a USB phone modem and couldn't do anything because the darn system
took all the bandwidth to do some kind of updating or communications of
some sort. So after about 5 frustrating minutes of being told that the
internet is not available or that google or Mozilla could not be found even
though the first two little pictures on Google chrome had started to load,
I gave up and pulled the phone line. The modem had been working away with
both LEDs blinking away so it was doing something. The communications
monitor list of the security showed a bunch of updates and other stuff that
either worked or after I pulled the plug showed a fail.

The other little problem I have a question about is does anyone know why a
modem would cause all the other phones in the house to ring in a continuous
tone as long as it is trying to connect. This happened with the internal
modem but not with the external usb connected modem. The only thing I can
figure there is a bad driver or possibly a bad modem. Not a problem but a
puzzle that has me wondering.

or better yet, turn off the auto updates.

Alternatively, haul it in to the local welfare book store and use their
wireless to let it do 17 hours of updates and 6 or 8 restarts

For the updates, set your connection type to metered.

To change this option, open the Settings app, head to Network & Internet >
Wi-FI, and click “Manage Known Networks”. Choose your modem network and
click “Properties”. From there, enable the “Set as metered connection”
option. This option only affects the Wi-Fi network you’re currently
editing, but Windows will remember this setting for each individual Wi-Fi
network on which you change it. (If you haven’t gotten the Anniversary
Update yet, this option will be in Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced
Options.)
