On this day in 1865 the United States flag was once again raised over Ft. Sumter in Charleston harbor to mark the end of the Second War of Independence. President Lincoln, unable to attend, sent a letter marking the occasion. The president sent his secretary John G. Nicolay. I'll bet you can still teach the current pups a few tricks the ol girls can do. I'll bet you can still fly left seat, with a good crew. Kinda like the story about Fangio doing a few laps in a W196 in CA a few years ago. First lap he was smiling and waving, Second lap the new SL camera car was having trouble keeping up. Third lap the SL spun out on the back of the track and Fangio was flyin and dead serious as he went past the crowd. Not bad for 80-something. (repeated in the current Star, letters column) Streaked? ;) Anyway, sure looks familiar. 'Hard to realize my last flight aboard 'em was nearly 34 years ago. Re: [MBZ] OT Wilton your call-up is coming
Under the judicial system, as it works, each murder committed in the bombing is an individual act of murder. Each person maimed is an individual harmed by a separate act accountable under the law, thus multiple counts. If your neighbor was killed in the blast and your wife also.. and the perp was only found guilty of killing your neighbor would you have closure, feel justice had been served? Further, all capital counts go to automatic appeal. On appeal, each count is treated, rightfully, as a separate case. If one count is set aside on appeal, say in this hypothetical, the murder of your neighbor, and the perp was not found guilty of the murder of your wife, under the double jeopardy rule which basically says, you can only be tried once, opening yet another case to charge the perp with the murder of your wife would be legally difficult and unlikely.. so the perp would be released, knowing he was guilty of the second murder.. Thus,,, cover all the bases in one trial with multiple counts. On Wed, Apr 8, 2015 at 7:17 PM, Mountain Man maontin@gmail.com wrote: Grant wrote: On another note.. Re: [MBZ] OT Wilton your call-up is coming
Our public TV channel here in SC has made some very good documentary-type shows about the history here, and the second war of independence and how the people in various parts of the state conducted themselves. One of them had a good part being an interview with SF based on his books, he was extremely interesting and a character himself. I don't remember which show it was, but they tend to show them every now and then, and I think you can stream them off their web site. If I see it again I will post it. You might want to look up Dr. Walter Edgar, he is a prof who has written a lot on the history of SC, and has a radio show every Friday on the public radio, usually an interview of someone who has written a history of some aspect of SC, the war and whatever else. He spoke at an event I went to last fall, he seemed a bit scattered but his talk was still interesting. You can get the podcasts if you want to listen to them, or stream it live. http://etvradio.org/programs/walter-edgars-journal Last week's was pretty good Dr. Heather Andrea Williams of Pennsylvania State University joins Dr. Walter Edgar for another Conversation on the Civil War, 1865. The subject: emancipation and freedom. Williams is one of the world’s leading historians of the experience of slavery in the 19th century. Her award-winning first book, /Self-Taught: African-American Education in Slavery and Freedom/ (University of North Carolina Press, 2005), argued that education was inseparable from the fight against slavery. This Friday is about the sonofabitch General Sherman In his book, /Sherman: A Soldier’s Passion for Order/ (Free Press, 1992) John F. Marszalek presents general William Tecumseh Sherman as a complicated man who, fearing anarchy, searched for the order that he hoped would make his life a success. Dr. Marszalek talks with Dr. Edgar about Sherman as a military commander who came to abhor what he saw as the senseless slaughter of the War, and who sought a different strategy to bring the South to surrender. --R On 4/8/15 5:18 PM, Jon Agne wrote: I’ve been searching around in the barn loft looking for my Shelby Foote trilogy.
