Re: [MBZ] OT iPhone battery cost?

2014-07-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I bought:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CHJ3UU4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8psc=1

and used the instructions:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+4S+Display+Assembly+Replacement/7277

and it worked out no problem. The hardest part was getting the cables all in
correctly which I'd actually done right the first time but didn't believe I'd
done right... The home button has to be transferred over which is kind of
fiddly. I ruined its adhesive but substituted a very small drop of super glue
which worked fine.

Keep the screws organized...

2014-07-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You can buy replacement screens on eBay form any number of vendors - you'll
find the prices all seem to hover around $25, I believe. The better kits
contain the tools you need, spudger, hexaglobular screwdriver, etc. You'll
need some jeweler's screwdrivers and a clean work surface.

You can go to ifixit.com and see the process with pictures.

Mine is cracked from the edge near the volume buttons to the speaker slot, so
it's not that bad. I'm just miffed as I have had an iPhone 4 for almost three
years only in a bumper case I never got so much as a chip. I haven't even
dropped the iPhone 4S I have now, and somehow in the first week it got cracked.
 Grr.

I'm holding out for the introduction of the iPhone 6 or whatever will probably
come out in September. When that happens I'm going to buy a 5S when prices
tank.

Be careful.

I am in a quandary with the mother-in-law's iPad. brother in-law's girlfriend
set it up for her a couple of years ago, including an iCloud account. She
activated the Find My iPad feature. No one can remember the password and the
mother-in-law's email address has changed since then as well. Can't even
remember the recovery questions.

As a result of this I can't set up a new icloud account on it for her, nor can
I install or remove any apps. This came up yesterday when she asked me to set
up Skype on it.

I'm at a loss as to what to do short of contacting Apple. If I could get her
into the Apple Store they could probably sort it out.

And no, doing a factory reset doesn't change or delete the iCloud data. The
device is linked to that account for ever and ever.

Re: [MBZ] OT iPhone battery cost?

2014-07-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Mitch, we may have escaped with just a little inconvenience, but I
need to evaluate further.

Bought some tools, watched a couple YouTube videos, printed out an iRevive
screw chart, took it all apart and cleaned/rinsed/soaked liberally with
isopropyl alcohol, scrubbed off the two corrosion spots (one at battery
connection, one at what I think is the screen connection), dried with a
blow drier and put it all back together. The dock connection and charging
cable also had a little green corrosion going on, so a little Deoxit there
did the trick.

Hurray!!! The phone seems to be charging, gives the battery charging
symbol when plugged in, but very faint like the screen is not getting any
back-light.

I'll let it charge a bit, then try to turn on and access via USB cable to
PC. At a minimum, getting all my wife's contacts off the phone would be
huge. I recently downloaded/saved all the pictures/videos (about a month
ago) so not too much video record may have been lost.
