I don't recall how the first gen perform, everybody seems to like the 2nd gen, even know a couple of guys who switched from 2G Cruzes to 2G Volts, but on paper it's hard to justify the 2G, because the Volt is much heavier, noticeably slower, and you'd never make up the (new) price difference in 200kmi of mostly battery driving. I'd want them to hand it over fully charged for a test drive. Then I'd put it in EV mode, drive it 25 miles, and see how many kWh the dash display thought I'd used and what percent was left. From that info you can calculate a reasonable estimate of current battery capacity. Then you can decide whether a nicely appointed overweight Cruze that doesn't need gas is worth as much as a nicely appointed and less overweight diesel Cruze, for I think a 140k 2014 diesel is worth about 6k also. That said, I'd rather have a 2017 Volt for the same reasons I'd rather have a 2017 Cruze. But you're not buying a clean 2017 Volt for $6k.
