I can sell a new master cylinder for far less than a rebuild kit. Why
rebuild?

It's not that rebuilt have a bad reputation, but if a new master cylinder
can provide decades of reliable service, why try to save a few bucks? If
saving $ is your plan, then get the kit and do it yourself so you know it's
done right. As mentioned previously, inspect your old first to make sure it
is rebuildable, then order the kit.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilt master cylinders any good?

2013-03-05 Thread Dieselhead

To borrow a phrase from Wilton; Zactly

One time in the 70s, I found a master cyl worth putting a kit in.
All the rest have been so rusty that it is not worthwhile. If you
have a very rare (unobtanium) master, Silver Post restorations will
bore and put a SS liner in your master (for a price).

I did buy a rebuilt booster from FLAPS 3 yrs ago for a 107 because
there was a significant (BIG) difference between it and the new one
from Q. (Rustysee below) Only time I can think of that I didn't
buy from Q. That rebuilt booster has been fine.

I can sell a new master cylinder for far less than a rebuild kit. Why
rebuild?

Yes. If their MBZ master cylinders are as poor quality of a rebuild as the
VW Beetle ones they sell then you are much better off with new ATE.

Swapping a master cylinder is a quick and easy job. A very good justification
for a set of flare nut wrenches if you don't already own some. An
indispensable tool for any sort of work on solid lines, such as brake or fuel.
