OK, here we go again. You all remember the 190D I bought with a bad
tranny, put a used tranny I had it in, would not shift past 2nd. Yanked
it out, put another tranny in. It too would not shift past 2nd. I played
with it for a bit, shifting it back and forth from forward to reverse etc
then all the sudden it started shifting just fine. So, I have been
driving that car for the last 2 months without a bit of problems.
Yesterday on the way to work, I get off the highway, stop at the light at
the end of the ramp, then go, guess what, wont upshift!! WTF? I drove the
last 3 miles to work in 2nd then after work I messed with it a bit. The
fluid level is fine, not burned or anything like that. The cable seems to
pull out and go back in just fine. I dont really think its the kickdown
stuck. I drove it around the parking lot and I was thinking it was in
first, but if I put it down into low you can then feel it shift down to
first. SO apparantly its starting out in 2nd, and not downshift to 1st
upon takeoff like it normally would. If you do kick it down to 1st, it
will not upshift to 2nd. Otherwise, if it starts in 2nd, it stays in 2nd.
What the heck could the problem be? Im going to change the fluid and
filter again thinking maybe its plugged up or something. What all else
would prevent an upshift?

Kaleb- found that I posted this, so this might be useful for the archives
here.

Listers,

After rebuilding the transmission in my '91 300d I wanted to make sure
pressures were correct. I found pressure data and a way to set the
modulator pressure ONLY without a proper gauge set.

Your local dealer should have the following pieces:

915036 005100 Hollow Bolt
102 990 00 88 Banjo Bolt

If not already spotless clean the area below the modulator around the
12mm pressure port bolt. Remove bolt, checking again that all is
clean. Replace with hollow bolt/banjo bolt combo- will also need
sealing washers, but I had those. In my case the pressure to aim for
was 47psi so I was able to use 1/4" PVC tubing as mine was rated for
50 PSI. I used a water pressure gauge that read to 80 PSI; a bit more
coarse that I would have liked but it got the job done. Gauge was
checked for accuracy beforehand. It should be noted that all tubing,
fittings and the gauge were all new and previously unused. This isn't
somewhere I wanted to chance contamination. I used about 8 feet of
tubing to have enough to read inside the car.

Connected the gauge and confirmed that there were no leaks. Was
curious to see that there was very little difference in pressure at 31
MPH or at idle, but I did both. Adjust the modulator by removing the
cap, pulling the tee out a bit and rotating- a little rotation goes a
long way. I think I replaced the cap between readings as my modulator
(new, updated style) leaked vacuum with the cap off- I can't remember
if that made a difference on the gauge.

I'm writing this up ~ 3 months after the fact so if there are more
details needed give me a shout! Modulator pressures for a range of
transmissions are below; these are all I have.

Note that this method is appropriate for the modulator pressure only:
The pump/line pressure can get to 200 PSI which will spectacularly burst PVC
tubing
of the type I used.

KAleb- to set pressure for the modulator I used the banjo bolt combo used on
the top thermostat housing of certain w124 cars. SInce pressure was ~ 50
PSI PVC tubing worked fine, but sounds like you need to measure pump
pressure and working pressure.

If you need the p/n for the bajo bolt let me know; have them at work and can
get them Monday.

I have a 1000 PSI gauge you can borrow or buy. oil filled. sweep is
something like 330 degrees. commonly used with working pressures
around 400 to 500 PSI.

For my Chevy transmissions, I just bought a 4 ft (1.5 m) piece of
high-pressure hydraulic line with the appropriate size fitting
and a 400 PSI (or so) gauge. Next time I'll probably get a
longer hose so I have more routing options.

a 124. I changed the filter and fluid and all was well. Sun Valley
said to always use Mann filter in the 124. I had an elring from
Rusty. Since then I have been buying the Manns from Rusty, but you
have to also order the gasket. The elrings come with a gasket. BTW,
I have several elrings, if anyone wants to buy them.

OK, here we go again. You all remember the 190D I bought with a bad
tranny, put a used tranny I had it in, would not shift past
2nd. Yanked it out, put another tranny in. It too would not shift
past 2nd. I played with it for a bit, shifting it back and forth
from forward to reverse etc then all the sudden it started shifting
just fine. So, I have been driving that car for the last 2 months
without a bit of problems. Yesterday on the way to work, I get off
the highway, stop at the light at the end of the ramp, then go,
guess what, wont upshift!! WTF? I drove the last 3 miles to work in
2nd then after work I messed with it a bit. The fluid level is
fine, not burned or anything like that. The cable seems to pull out
and go back in just fine. I dont really think its the kickdown
stuck. I drove it around the parking lot and I was thinking it was
in first, but if I put it down into low you can then feel it shift
down to first. SO apparantly its starting out in 2nd, and not
downshift to 1st upon takeoff like it normally would. If you do
kick it down to 1st, it will not upshift to 2nd. Otherwise, if it
starts in 2nd, it stays in 2nd. What the heck could the problem
be? Im going to change the fluid and filter again thinking maybe
its plugged up or something. What all else would prevent an upshift?

If I end up having to pull this thing back out, Im converting it to a 5
speed, I got everything I need in another car to do it.
