Nice!If the flipper is a "Mercedes technician" why didn't he put in
the new antenna? that is a very easy job. Maybe 15 minutes.

This car would be a great candidate to put in an OM60x Diesel, then you
could nearly double the MPG.

Re: [MBZ] someone needs this

2017-06-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
When I was first starting out in the working world in he early 1980s and the
token “shop boy” running around looking for buckets of prop wash, I was given
the chance to paint the cab of a big old International flat bed truck we had.
I think we got it from a customer who couldn’t pay us for something and ended
up giving us the truck to settle a bill. It wasn’t in bad shape at all, just
really weathered.

I think I got elected to paint it because I had a professional paint gun that
had been my Dad’s.

It got painted sort of a Ford engine blue. Turned out pretty well, as the
surface was good and required little prep. I spent a long time masking and
prepping before painting it. Single stage acrylic, I believe.

When I went back into business with the same guys in 2008, the truck was still
there and the paint was intact. So I guess that says something for my painting
skills…

The bottom line is that none of us are likely to become show car painters.
But, if one is working on a bottom feeder beater, then the paint will
likely be better than it was and will provide enough film to better
protect the metal under it.

I painted a Mercury back in about 87. I struggled but it did not end up
too bad. I had the biggest issue with the hood. It was difficult to get
a smooth finish as I may not have overlapped enough. A bit of overspray
left me with sort of lines in the paint. It was a white car so did not
look too bad unless the light was right. The sides, roof and trunk
turned out pretty decent. Probably a good thing it was not a black car.

Back in 2002, some guy in Dayton had 3 he wanted to get rid of for $800 OBO.
IIRC, it turned out to be a 280, a 280SEL, and a 280 SEL 4.5. I think all three
were 1972s, and they looked about that condition.

I rank this with reclining rear seats. A nice option if you can get it, but
since it’s unlikely I’ll ever be riding in the back a waste (to me.) And it
doesn't make a lot of sense considering the price. Ouch.

Still a beautiful looking vehicle - almost 45 years later.
That cannot be said for all cars. Some stand the test of time better

Ok, I'd say of you're interested in passing some time, please go check it
out!  But don't go out of your way.

Most important to me is lack of rust and rust repair.  And condition of the
interior.  Original everything is good, even if its in desperate need of
service.  Hack job repairs and non original parts are a major turn off.

But clean original rocker panels would make this car.

Thanks

I had them on my '59 Alfa Guilietta Spyder Veloce.

As the website says,

They were first seen on the 300SL Gullwing in 1955.

Positively locked into position, the mirror is virtually
vibration free.

That's the truth, and they don't get knocked out of adjustment.

I would have used the older non aero type of mirrors that were

I can't remember the brand of those mirrors, but they were all the rage for
sports cars in the '60's and '70's.
What is that thing where the star is suppoed to be in the center of the
steering wheel?
At least they cleaned up the interior before taking photos -

They need to post some pics of the engine compartment.

And what's with the fender mirrors??

Otherwise it looks interesting. Bet that $985 current bid is going to go up
considerably by the auction close.

Well it's not a fully manual CC, there are electronics involved to
maintain temp but they tend to be reliable, it's the pods behind the
dash that like to cause trouble and grief.
Bit pricey for a rusty 124 base model. Had one for sale over here a

How slow do you reckon that would be? Its the same OM601 as in my 190D,
actually a 200D you'd figure would be smaller than the 2.2l in my 190D. Its got
to be 240D speed...

Should turn out fair mileage though, or kilometerage anyway.

Curt,

It was General Eisenhower who had the civilian towns' residents filed thru the
camps to see the dead bodies piled up and the condition of those who were
alive. I did see one old movie clip that showed American GI's shooting some of
the German guards. They were insensed with what they found. Some of the
prisoners also went after the guards when given the opportunity. It was a sad
day for humanity to have the camps at all.

Re: [MBZ] Someone Needs This -- now social commentary

2012-03-13 Thread Dan Penoff
Went to the Holocaust Museum in DC not long after it opened, Got a government
buddy to get me a ticket, as they were booked well in advance.

Very powerful place. Right up there with seeing the Constitution (something I
saw e4very time I visited DC.)

I went to one of the German camps when I was in high school, made quite an
impression...

Which general was it that brought in the press as they liberated camps because
he was so sure nobody would believe what they'd found?

# 1 grandson, a college student in France, visited Auschwitz and Berkinau

He went to Dachau during his junior year in high school. I've never been
able to get him to say much about it.
I'm not sure they have the same impact on him as they do on me, but I hope
they have enough impact.

Dachau for me. It is tough to visit there. But every one should go
there, not mec Ca at least once in their life.

Re: [MBZ] Someone Needs This -- now social commentary

2012-03-13 Thread Dan Penoff
I can't imagine things being too stressful in a suburb of Green Bay. Granted,
there are some "big city" issues there, like Asian gangs, but the general
quality of life around those parts makes for a pretty dull police blotter, I
would suspect.

When I lived in Sheboygan the locals were still talking about a murder (the
first in like 30 years) that had taken place several years before I had moved
there.

I can think of a lot worse places to do police work, that's for sure, eh.

I knew a guy like that 30 years ago. He's now the chief of a medium sized suburb
of Green Bay. I always wondered how much the job changed him.
