You were always supposed to pay sales tax on on-line purchases, but it was
on the "honor" system. You declared it on the State Income tax form and
paid it there. Enough States got together and forced the issue of sellers
having to collect the tax. I don't remember whether congress got involved
or not, but they probably did.

Re: [MBZ] Taxes on online purchases

2022-10-23 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
In WA, the "Amazon tax" is complicated. They tax on _facilitators_ that
do more than X (for some value of X that is very low) amount of business
in that State. All Amazon and eBay sales are now taxed, full retail.

So, if you do business _directly_ with an out-of-state provider that has
neither an in-State presence _nor_ does an appreciable detectable amount
of business in your State, the transaction remains tax-free like before.

For a brief time when WA was first doing this I had big-ticket items shipped to
my work address in ID. But now they've gotten into the game too.

State tax revenues were getting hugely diminished by online purchases so the
states all got into taxing them just like a store purchase. Even stuff from the
chinee sites charge sales tax
