I used to drive my 1951 VW manual, no synchro at all, with no clutch - match the engine speed when down shifting just as if you'd double clutched, but with more accuracy, or "crunch". Granted, the power used ws considerably less (25hp when new). UPS trucks do a lot of slow, stop and go, city driving. Diesel might not be the best choice. Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?
UPS destroys their package cars when they are retired from service. First, the package car is stripped of its badging, decals, etc. Next it is painted white, crushed to pieces and photographed. There are still a lot of vehicles in service from the mid 90's and even many of the new package cars still come equipped with the Spicer 5 speed. The new automatic transmissions are prevalent on the smaller size package cars (e.g. P500, P570), but the reason behind them is not to lure drivers who cannot operate a manual transmission. Every service provider who goes through driver training at UPS is trained on a specially designed 'training' package car, equipped with a manual transmission. -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mitch Haley Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 10:31 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas? Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?
Big change on teh UPS trucks is auto tranny. Have a friend who delivers the to the hubs when new ones arrive and they have had to replace trucks with automatic transmissions because they couldn't find drivers who could drive manual tranny's. I remmeber when the same thing happened to the bus line I was driving for. Sad day and definitly less quality drivers. Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas?
LNG has always been a part of the UPS fleet, though in limited quantities and only in select areas (e.g. the Pleasantdale GA hub). Typically, the size of the package car (correct UPS term) dictates whether or not the engine is diesel or gas. The larger package cars (P1000, P1200) always have diesel engines, whereas the smaller package cars (P500, P570) have gas engines. I haven't seen a feeder truck with LNG until that picture. Usually we would try to incorporate those technologies into vehicles that are more "customer facing", so to speak. -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Brian Toscano Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 8:19 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas? http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/22/u-p-s-finds-a-substitute-for-diese l-natural-gas-at-260-degrees-below-zero/ On Tue, Apr 24, 2012 at 6:01 PM, TE wrote: > UPS has always had both gas and diesel trucks. > > -Original Message- > From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com > [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] > On Behalf Of WILTON > Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 7:39 AM > To: mercedes list > Subject: [MBZ] UPS Diesel or gas? > > #2 son was at UPS warehouse coupla hours ago; new UPS gas driven truck > sitting there; son asked them why a new gas-driven truck 'stead of the > usual Diesel.
