Re: [MBZ] Why are these things priced this high? 2012 Smart Car - $5, 995

Like when I pass by the local Shriner’s Hospital, I look for the smaller
cars/parking spaces where the employees park.

Or, the one I like far better:

There is a building in a run-down part of downtown Tampa that I drive by
frequently where the Longshoreman’s Union hall is located. I’ve always wanted
to go in and ask if they can teach me some good swear words.

That’s a quite good price. The engine is very reliable, the rest of it is
beefed-up fairly simple drivetrain under a mostly unchanged 40yo (or more?)
solid military body. Somewhat agricultural and utilitarian but usually tarted
up in newer versions. This one not so much given 20yo age. They have the price
reflecting a limited niche pricey supply, and are sorta cool, and not totally
impractical for soccer mommy or rich toy use, and will climb straight up a wall
if you want to do off-road. If I had a lot of disposable money I would consider
getting one just because, and this one looks to be decent.

I actually don’t think this would be a separate part as it is all an assembly
and getting it apart looks quite involved, but it’s worth checking I guess

Because those are awesome cars. Super simple, overengineered, slightly
underpowered, very comfortable. At 6'3 I can stretch out in the back of a

They made a diesel v6 but wow is it a dog.

Re: [MBZ] Why I Hate Traveling

2022-08-22 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
We’ll get there. This flight was cancelled yesterday for the first time this
year. There are only a few flights in/out of Flagstaff daily - 4 on American
and two on United. United is dropping their service the end of October.

There’s no question it’s a staffing issue, but in fairness, weather has
exacerbated things the last day or two. I tracked the original inbound
equipment earlier today. It was going from Midlands, TX, to DFW, then to
Jackson, MS and back to DFW. The Midlands flight (this morning) was already an
hour late, delays at DFW and Jackson would have pushed it out so far it would
never have made it back here before midnight.

To American’s credit, they saw this and found new equipment. The rub is that
they had no crew. I figured this would happen.

Inbound equipment is coming from Corpus Christie and is on the ground, so as
long as a crew shows up we’re good to go and will only be in two hours late.
With all the other havoc in the system today I’m counting myself lucky.

And this is after having to reschedule from Sunday because the Flagstaff flight
was cancelled. At least they anticipated that well in advance and we knew long
before we would have left for the airport.

It’s still a cluster. We usually take an early morning flight from Tampa to
Phoenix, but that’s been taken out of the schedule until October. If we could
have done that we would have been home hours ago.

3:45 out of Tampa to DFW. Only one of four flights to DFW that went out today,
the other three cancelled. Lots of very, very unhappy travelers in the airport.

Boards on time, everyone gets on, we’re ready to go. Ground hold for 10 minutes
due to weather in DFW. No biggie.

Ground hold clears. No action. Nav system is unhappy, calling maintenance.

Maintenance comes after 20 minutes or so. Clears fault.

Maintenance has to update logs. Another 20 minutes.

No pushback crew or tug. Another 10 minutes.

No counter person to move the jet bridge. Another 10 minutes.

Get out to the threshold. 5 minute traffic hold.

Got out an hour and 20 minutes late. No biggie, got a two hour layover.

Get to DFW with and hour before flight to Flagstaff. Inbound equipment is about
20 minutes late, no biggie. Inbound equipment arrives, passengers deplane. No
fresh crew available until 10:00 pm (flight was scheduled to depart at 7:45 pm).

Rescheduled to 10:26 with new crew and equipment. Will try to get crew before
that, unlikely to happen.

Gates have been changed from the original gate six times since 8:00. Moved all
over the place, now back at the original departure gate after all the changes.

30 minutes to board. Looks like the inbound equipment has just arrived.

This is a major league cluster. Larry, Moe and Curley must be running the place.

They will claim weather, maintenance, whatever. I think it all goes back to
staffing. The airlines are running on skeleton crews since the pandemic. All
the old guys took retirement and the young guys look at the scheduling and pay

for 3 to 10 times the price.

I do. It doesn't seem to matter. Some people are decent, and respond even if
the vehicle is sold. Some people just never respond. And some are such a holes
you can be the first responder, be on the way, and they sell it before you get
there.

The internet is a huge audience. Any good deals you spot, so do thousands of
others. They don't last and it's more or less down to luck who sees it and acts
first.

Likewise if something looks reasonable but has been for sale more than a few
days there's probably something wrong with it or it's actually overpriced.

I seen to be seeing more and more CL ads with email only. What stinks is that
the sellers are either inattentive, the car is sold, or they don’t check their
email regularly. It’s tough to get a response, or so it seems.

Re: [MBZ] Why Do I Bother?

2021-12-30 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Their opinions do not conform to my experience. I had the OM603 SDL running at
80 mph through MT on I-90 and I-94 to cross the state with no issue, other than
a 3am blizzard that was tossing other cars into the median and ditches. The
OM617 in the SD only got lead footed to 80 for long stretches on I-5 for about
3 hours. Steady and no runaway. The OM606na would run at those speeds for 10
hours at a stretch, tank to tank. Even the W220 on 24 slogs at 85pmh had no
issues… only gasser benz I can speak to. The OM615 was ok blasting along at
70mph all day long and held 84mph for many minutes (floored) until I chickened
out and let up. None unstable at top speeds.

Yes that is myth. I drove my 240D commuting 140 miles RT for 2 or 3 days a
week for 3 years. Ran middle lane on 3 lanes in MA. Ran it about 80-. In MA
the left lane is 85-90.
Had 300K on it when I sold it. Needed blower and body work. Engine and
trans had M1 only.. My Dad was a truck driver in the 50's. His motto was to
drive it as if you don't own a bolt on it..

The Mustang II was a crime against humanity. Whoever okayed that design should
have been flogged in the center of Detroit.
Same with the new electric Mustang SUV thing. Doesn't tick any of the boxes
that say "Mustang is cool because". I figure the design discussion went "People
like Mustangs, people like SUVs. Lets make an SUV Mustang, oooh, and make it
electric!" As if the average v8 loving, Mustang owning motorhead is suddenly
going to say "You know what I need, an electric station wagon!"

I have sometimes wondered if that is why the throttle is responsive over its
entire range of travel, unlike many gassers where 90% of the throttle response
seems to be in the first 25% of throttle travel and it doesn't seem to have
much effect beyond that. Note that I've never driven a modern MB gasser so
maybe they are the same.
