I regret making that Traction Avant comment.
Looked up a picture of it after I sent that message, and it was pretty nifty.

I can remember a R&T writer doing an article on taking a trip in a 2CV truck,
which he likened to "a sloth trying to escape from a quonset hut", and I had to
agree with him. (that truck compared to a regular 2cv like a VW pickup compares
to the Rabbit, if the pickup had a rounded corrugated aluminum shell)

I had a friend when I lived in San Francisco that had a 2CV .. Had a dip
stick for a gas gauge and a knob on the dash that adjusted the ignition
timing that was calibrated in octane.

What about the 122 and 544?

My dad and I once had a 1958 Volvo 444, black with orange flames on the
front end (PO must have thought they were cool. Perhaps, the flames were an
easy way to spot his teenaged daughter around town?
It is basically the same body as the 544 but with oblong tail lights and a
2-piece split windshield where the 544's was one piece of curved glass.
It's original B16 engine was swapped out by a PO for a B18 (even a B20 would
fit). It was a decent car that wasn't too abused, and it was a California
car all its life and had absolutely no rust anywhere. It wasn't nice enough
to be a show winner, but it was a great 20 footer. The bogus moving company
didn't ship it to Oregon right away, so it sat in their yard and got
vandalized inside and out. The engine never ran the same ever again. They
went bankrupt before we have a chance to sue them. The Volvo ended up being
sold.

My family bought a new 1969 144s, 4 spd. I "inherited it at about 75Kmi. Drove
it to about 160Kmi, it started using oil.
Being young & dumb, I yanked engine to O'haul it.
Everything inside (Cylinders, Bearings, etc) were at NEW product specs! The
damn thing only needed valve seals.
I reassemble and drove it well past 200Kmi, sold it for $400.
Problem: I never could figure out the oil damped carbs. I should have made a
2barrel intake for it.

2008-08-07 Thread Frederick W Moir
  Hi, All.
Yes, what about the 544 and 122?
I Had an 64 PV544 for two whole weeks, before the center mount for
the rear suspension tore free from the body and pole-vaulted me into the weeds.
Also had a very fine 1967 P222 (122S wagon ) that I adored.
Unfortunately it was mine during my divorce and I neglected it. Rust
Central did for both cars and the basic clues were 1. Close
encounters of the weedy kind. 2. That the (left-handed) parking
brake lever came off in my hand. Messy that.
Ah! Sunny days of yore.

I had a 1959 Volvo P 544S IIRC back in grad school (1969) that was great fun
to drive. It could cruised along at 77 all day long, 4 speed on a LONG
stick, and when you got out of the car you felt refreshed and not the least
bit achy because the orthopedic seats. I bought it for $425 and sold it a
year later for $325. The only problem was the wiper transmission. Both
sides got stripped (leading to floppy wipers) within a couple weeks of each
other. I ended up using just one wiper mounted in such a way that it
actually cleared most of the w/s.

You want preppy, you gotta drive a Saab. Volvos are for a different
crowd, the prepster's parents, or handed down to the prepster from the
