The basic idea is to heat the coolant by having an electrical heater inside
the block, NOT by having a fire in the engine compartment.

On 12/11/05, L. Mark Finch [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Decided to plug in the block heater on my car (an '82 300D) tonight,

wait until morning to see just exactly where the problem was, but even
without seeing it I'm sure I'll be replacing some wiring

The W115/W108/W109/W123/W116 cars all lock ONLY from the driver's door
since that is the only place there is a valve. All cars with a single
line system can be unlocked from either front door or the trunk.

The key will unlock the PS and trunk on the earlier cars, but will not
release the vac locks. There is a spring loaded override that will be
VERY stiff with lack of use.

I would suspect either the VIN got garbled or the lock set is not
original (or the VIN isn't -- check the one on the radiator support vs
the one on the door pillar!)

FWIW, when we ordered the new lock cylinder from the local dealer (rusty
couldn't get the vin coded ones at the time), the dealer did something
stupid, and the car's key (which works for the glove box and trunk, as well
as the doors) did not work. After finding someone with marginal intelligence
behind the counter (wow, it doesn't work. are you sure this is the key that
starts the car right now? yeah, car's in the parking lot, go check for
yourself) the counter guy made some nasty phone calls and told me to come back
in a couple of days. New cylinder worked fine.

Untrue, as there is an early 126 system that still only operated
from the driver's door, yet was single-line. It's nasty, btw, that
pump is poorly-designed and fragile. I don't know if this same system
was ever in other cars of that vintage (107, 201), I do know it's
_not_ in a 123.

I tried unsuccessfully to lock/unlock all the doors from the passenger
side on my '84 300D, but just thought something was defective. Are
you saying that's normal?

That's normal. And if you've ever been inside the doors of one of these
cars (versus the later ones), _why_ will be instantly obvious. You are,
however, supposed to be able to unlock the passenger side all by itself,
unless the lock spring toggle mechanism is broken (as it was in the
Chicken Wagon for a period of time).

The advantages of the later system are legion. The only downside
is when the pump fails. (Rare, unless we're talking about the
evil early 126 system.)

My 84 has a aftermarket alarm/remote lock-unlock system installed and I
don't think I have ever used the key to unlock/lock it.
I know I should lubricate the door locks now and again but that remote

123 cars don't centrally lock/unlock from ANY lock but the driver's side.

It's a distinct possibility that the dealer-cut key was cut incorrectly -
I've had it happen to me. Of course, when it happened to me, I had
another

key to compare it to, showed the parts guy at the dealership, and they
ordered me a new (properly-cut) one.

Every 60x engine shipped to the US had a block heater installed. The

Every 60x engine shipped to the US had a block heater installed. The
block heater cord was only installed if the owner asked during the first
year or two. A cord costs about $25.

At 14F this morning, our 603 at 290k miles, without using the block
heater, started after less than 5 seconds of cranking. Glad I replaced
all the glow plugs this summer!
The 602, at only 240k miles, started just as quickly. Didn't have the
throttle even 1/4 of the way down.

I'm driving the 2.5 to OKC every day. My son is driving the SDL to
school and such. Doris doesn't care what she drives, as long as it
will start, so is still driving her van. Out daughter is driving the
240D - I assume it'started OK, since I didn't hear from her - from her
apartment to OU and work.

And MY son's friend broke off his ONLY key in the door lock (1985 300D). He

fits neither the front PS door (the broken key is still lodged in the

Some Mercedes (all of my 124/201s made after '84 on) can be
locked/unlocked from the trunk. Not sure about a 123, but worth a try.

That feature wasn't added to the 201 until 1985! At the same time, the
central locking could be activated from BOTH sides, not just the
driver's side. I don't know about 123/126s from that period (despite
owning an '85 123 for several years - I simply have forgotten how many
ways you could lock/unlock it).

YES! Also on all 201 made after '85 (at least my Euro '85 does). Didn't
work on either of the '84 201s I owned.

A tiny (!) drop of superglue on the stub, and try to fish out the
original key piece. Obviously you want to be _really_ careful
doing this, gluing the lock together is not the point of the
exercise.

From there you could get a copy cut from the piece.

Does the VIN key fit the trunk? Glovebox?

124/201, and later 126/107 all have the single-line
unlocks-from-any-lock
electric pump system. But not the 123. (Nor the 114, 115 or 116
either.)

You may be able to open the trunk with the new VIN key and from there
you can access the locking and unlocking vacuum hoses, but I'm not sure
you can apply enough vacuum to one of them to actually open the locks
due to the action of the vent orifice in the driver's-door vacuum
switch.

It has a block heater installed at the factory. You just need to
purchase and attach the cord.
