Vredestein Sprint Classics in 185R14 are a great choice for a 300SD, and
it’s the original size.

195 70 14 works, but the choices are getting worse and worse. Except you
can now get Pirelli CN36s in that size.

I just put a set of Michelin MXV 185R14s on my 300SD… pricey but super

The tires are tubeless, but would originally have had tubes and can be run
safely with or without depending on the application.

On the DS, with rim landings that are not "safety landings", you ought to
run tubes, but plenty of people do not. The 2CV tires are also tubeless.
But since the rims frequently leak, tubes are a help. In both cases the
tires are designed to safely accommodate tubes, not a given for most modern
tires because of heat buildup.

And yes, price is high, but again depends on how you use the car. Export
price is without VAT. Free shipping to the US.

Re: [MBZ] Tires for old cars

2023-07-25 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Longstone has Michelin XWX in 205/70/14, but they're even more expensive:

Ditto the Pirelli Cinturato:

2023-07-25 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Vague in a bad way. Not quite bad enough for me to get rid of them, but bad
enough that I would never repeat the error.

I'm thinking of ordering a set of Michelin MXV-P tires
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/185hr14-michelin-mxv-p.html from
Longstone. I've ordered from them for my Citroëns several times over the
years. Note that these are genuine Michelins, not licensed copies. For a
while they were made in France, lately in Serbia.

The 2CV got a set of
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/125sr15-michelin-x.html and the DS got
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/180hr15-michelin-xas.html on the *front*
and narrower https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/165vr15-michelin-xas.html on
the *rear*, as was supplied from the factory!

The tires arrived quickly (ordered from UK on Monday, received in
California on Friday) and were cheaper than Coker. Generally free shipping.
Of course vastly more expensive than the Kinergy ($250/tire vs $90), but
also vastly better, IMHO. Depends on how you use the car.

Re: [MBZ] Tires and such

2022-03-22 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Interesting parallel:

For years I gave my Dad crap about spending $200+ for a pair of Allen-Edmunds
dress shoes when I would buy some $50-$75 Cole-Haas or some other brand. Some
years after his passing, when I moved to Port Washington, WI where
Allen-Edmunds is based, I went to their “tent sale”, an annual event at the
beginning of every July where they sell factory second shoes in a tent out in
front of the factory.

I bought a couple pairs of nice wingtips, probably spent $300. Once I got
fitted, I knew why my Dad spent $200 on a pair of Allen-Edmunds. They fit like
they’ve always been on my feet, they were unbelievably comfortable, and they
lasted a long, long time - after which for $100 I could get them “recrafted”
and have them good for more years of wear and enjoyment.

I probably have 10 pairs of A-Es in my closet right now. Sadly, I don’t wear
dress shoes anymore, but when I did these were the only things I put on my
feet. I have two pair of their “driving shoes”, which cost about $150/each (or
used to), one of which are my “knock about the house” shoes, the other, a newer
and pair in better condition, my casual “going out” shoes.

Yeah, they aren’t cheap, but they’re far more comfortable, fit better, and last
much longer than cheaper shoes. Dad was right.

I was the one who recommended www.tires-easy.com. I purchased sets of
excellent H rated all season tires for my two 300TD wagons. They sell
unfamiliar brands for v. low prices but with a good warranty. Brands you
never heard of but they have excellent riding characteristics. Never had a
problem. IIRC I paid $50 ea., including shipping.

Can you mount/balance them yourself? Don't overlook the cost of having
that done, if not.

When I bought snow tires in early November, I was going to get them from
Tire Rack but after looking at what I would pay for shipping and then
having them mounted and balanced, I bought from my local tire shop. They
also give me free lifetime repairs and rotation.

I typically go with the highest letter rating as it means more polyester
plies in the sidewall and better cornering performance from the stiffer
sidewall. The td is supposed to have h rated but they are hard to find.

Have had good luck with Hankook. Put a set of kumo all seasons on the
touareg and they perform well but the tread blocks are so big that they are
very noisy, so look out for that.

You have to remember that simpletire is a consolidator of independent
tar stores.   Some great buys IF the store wants to move them.
Otherwise, it is pretty near the prices of a retail store.

Give discounttiredirect.com also.  That was Klebs tar source of choice a
couple years ago, and I have found them to be good many times.

Re: [MBZ] Tires for the 1993 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-12-22 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I've been happy with Nokian Entyre for the 124 from
https://simpletire.com   or Barum from Discounttiredirect.com
different that discount tire.  Both allow you to ship the tires direct
to a local dealer for installation.   They end up being around $80 each
installed.   In the last case, it was the firestone store that is maybe
1/8 miile away.  Very easy to walk there.

Michelins have not provided good service life for me, and are not worth
the super high price.

For the van I use Nokian Entyre 2.0 from simpletire.   Simpletire seems
to list the inventory of local tire shops, who often discount the
inventory deeply to move it out.

I tried Cooper 3, 4 and 5.   The service life is ok but they tend to
slip belts like all 'Merkin tars.  Rain/snow traction was good for a
road tar.  I think I got about 60k miles on the CS4 on the van.  There
was lots of tread left when the clown car ride got unbearable.   For
what I paid, the service life is ok, but could have been better.

One set of Barum has 30-40 k so far, and they seem to hold up well. Keep
in mind they are essentially Yuro Continentals, which were always my
first choice in tars when the yuro Continentals were available in the US.

Since Conti bought general, the USA contis are not as good.  They slip
belts like a general tar.  They also price them neat michelin.  I guess
that is ok, because they are equally bad.

The nokians are in the 10-20k mile range, so the jury is still out, but
Jim and others have sworn by Nokis.  So far, so good.  All are better
than warehouse club tars or dead sam tars.

After 40 years of building radial tar in the USA, there is no excuse for
USA tars slipping belts something like 90% of the time.  I've never had
a slipped belt on yuro tars except Michelin.  The  only difference I can
come up with as a theory is that turnover in Merkun tar plants is
multiples of a yuro tar plant.  In yurp, by the time you are 16-18 you
are put in an occupation, and pretty much have to stay there for your
working life.

French or spanish Michelins?  well we all know about the Frog work
ethic.  USA michelins=slipped belts.

I've had very poor results with asian tars.

Albuquerque is to get a new set of tires -- the car was sitting in
someone's yard for six years until six months ago so the tires are
toast (recall one of the craigslist pictures showed the right-rear
tire as flat and the rim sitting on it).

I thought of stopping by Costco, but then thought about Discount Tire
because of the abundance of their stores throughout the country and the
availability of a road hazards warranty.

So what manufacturer and model of tire is the next question!

One of the tires Discount Tire is pushing is the Michelin Defender T+H
195/65R15 91H SL BSW with an 80,000 mile warranty for $107.00 each.
It has: Tread Grade820
Traction Grade A
 Temperature Grade B
Speed Rating Up to 130 mph
customer reviews 4.8 Out of 5

Adding the filters "On Promotion", "Review Ratings 5 of 5", and "In

90,000 mile warranty for $66.00 each.
It has: Tread Grade860
Traction Grade A
Temperature Grade A
Speed Rating Up to 130 mph
customer reviews 5.0 Out of 5 (from one person who has a Prius)

Other tires available are:

Hankook Kinergy GT H436 195/65R15 91T SL BSW HK 60,000-mile warranty.
$66.00
It has: Tread Grade540
Traction Grade A
 Temperature Grade A
Speed Rating Up to 118 mph

Pirelli P4 Fourseasons Plus P195/65R15 91T SL BSW 90,000 mile warranty
for $80.00 each.
It has: Tread Grade760
Traction Grade A
Temperature Grade B
Speed Rating Up to 118 mph
customer reviews 4.4 Out of 5

Barum Brillantis 2 195/65R15 91T SL BSW 40,000 mile warranty
$62.00
It has: Tread Grade420
Traction Grade A
Temperature Grade B
Speed Rating Up to 118 mph
customer reviews 4.5 Out of 5

They also have tires by Goodyear, Bridgestone, Dunlap, and others, as
well as many others by Hankook.

So, what to do?

I got Kumhos for the $500E300 from Tire Rack, shipped to and installed at a
local shop, had a rebate thing so they were pretty inexpensive. Seem like OK
tires, they do what tires are supposed to do. Some reviews suggested they wear
quickly but I haven’t put too many miles on them so don’t know.

were as good or better stopping on wet roads when it was 50% worn.
Michelin claims that the wet /rain grooves expand and therefore are
better at dispersing water.

Looks like around $15 is the bottom price including disposal of the old tires.
Other places with better locations charge $20 plus $3 disposal.

My parents had a Jeep Cherokee that was worthless in any slippery situation
outside of 4wd. The tires lasted something crazy like 90,000 miles. Dad said
"I'm going to replace them with the same tires, they wear so good." I never
understood that. When we went moose hunting last year he wanted to go in my
pickup with the General Grabber AT2s...

And even worse in snow or on ice.
Years back I had a set of Michelin tires that would not wear out - But
they got to where I could get stuck on a flat parking lot if it was
slippery.
I was at a local auto parts store and could not move forward or backward
as the lot was a bit uneven from it being warm and then turning cold.
Small bumps in the ice prevented me from moving as the tires just spun.
I finally replaced them for that reason.

Last time I was there, maybe 20 years ago, it was free mounting and rotation,
but you had to pay for balancing. At the time Wal-mart only charged for
balancing, if you bought the tire and paid for the balance, you got lifetime
road hazard from Wal-Mart. Not any more.

My Farm Bureau charges $2 stem, $5 dismount, $5 mount, $5 balance.
So, $17 or $12, depending on if the rim was bare.

Mitch.

Defender is going to be a lower speed rated tire. I know it is only appropriate
on older cars. Should not be used on anything 124 or newer. I will say I have
the premiers on my 97 e300 and they are great tires. Order from discount tire
direct though, should be cheaper than tire rack. If you don't have your own

I don't think a bad alignment would cause that, but I agree that an
alignment is a good idea when spending that much on tires. The place I use
provides a before and after print-out, see if you can get that and then
you'll know if the alignment was off.

I change dino oil at 7500 per the maintenance manual. I am not
remembering if the older cars stated a shorter interval, I am
thinking 5k for some reason. I usually do the tire rotation at
the same time also since I have my own computer balancer etc. I
am thinking now if I should go with the MB 15k mile interval
instead. I admit lately I have not been tracking maintenace
intervals like I should and suspect I have really been running
about 10-15k oil change intervals, bad me. I am setting up this
maintenace program that I used to run years ago that works great
but after a hard drive crash i lost the program.

Used for the win. You could change them several times per year and still
come out ahead. People switch tires for all manner of silly reasons. Most
shops selling them stand behind them. They recycle the rest into concrete

There's quite an industry around here selling used tires on Craigslist. You
search by your tire size and get a bunch of returns.

To be honest, I have been tempted a couple of times, as I have seen some really
nice high end tires with minimal wear going pretty cheap, like under $200 for a
set of four.
