Re: [MBZ] watch out VW dizzelers
Some government jobs, both federal and local, seem to be a form of unememployment insurance that only requires the person to show up every day. If they sat at their computers and did as little as possible it would be better than just giving them money, but some think that if they don't "do something", they could lose their job. The result is laws and regulations that sometimes work a hardship on people. Following is a good illustration of this problem: "Doctors, hospitals and insurers are bracing for possible disruptions on Oct. 1 when the U.S. health-care system switches to a massive new set of codes for describing illnesses and injuries. Under the new system, cardiologists will have not one but 845 codes for angioplasty. Dermatologists will need to specify which of eight kinds of acne a patient has. Gastroenterologists who don’t know what’s causing a patient’s stomachache will be asked to specify where the pain is and what other symptoms are present—gas? eructation (belching)?—since there is a separate code for each. In all, the number of diagnostic codes doctors must use to get paid is expanding from 14,000 to 70,000 in the latest version of the International Classification of Diseases, or ICD-10. A separate set of ICD-10 procedure codes for hospitals is also expanding, from 4,000 to 72,000. Hospitals and physician practices have spent billions of dollars on training programs, boot camps, apps, flashcards and practice drills to prepare for the conversion, which has been postponed three times since the original date in 2011. Some coding experts warn that claims denials could double as providers and payers get used to the new, more specific codes.snip http://www.wsj.com/articles/70-000-ways-to-classify-ailments-1443397601 . Since this thing just went into operation yesterday, its best to keep copies of all medical paperwork until the health profession gets it sorted out; if it ever does. Sadly, voting for this or that politician or political party that promises to "make government smaller" has never seemed to work. Gerry . I'm also wondering how the "fix" will affect MPG. A work colleague has a VW diesel, and the rumor mill says the "fix" will cause fuel consumption to increase dramatically, so he plans to avoid the fix and stay away from the dealer all together. Car does not have the DEF/DPF injection tank or system, and he thinks the "fix" requires that to be installed. I wouldn't be surprised if EPA mandates that if a car which needs the fix comes to the dealer for any service, the fix is required by law to be performed, regardless of car owner desire. In reading some of the Bosch fuel injection pump training literature on Dave M's site, there is a trade-off of injection timing between fuel consumption and NOX emissions, so if the fix changes the injection timing and increases the amount of exhaust fed back in via the EGR, I can see that impacting fuel consumption and engine power, but I don't know enough about how the DEF/DPF system works to see what that does. I was under the impression DEF/DPF was simply injected into the exhaust stream ahead of one of the catalysts to reduce the NOX. - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Sep 30, 2015 at 5:22 PM, OK Don via Mercedeswrote: > How does injecting DEF in the exhaust effect mileage? A clear case of better living by government regulation, I believe. By using more fuel, you pollute less, generate a smaller carbon and heat footprint, and contribute to the social order as part of your "fair share". More forests will be cut down to produce paper for the multitude of copies of the regulations, which will deplete wildlife habitat and thus cause more employment for federal regulators. Am I following the logic points here yet? Ooops.. I left out, greater control over what you do as a person by larger and more powerful government with more agency power.. Fundamental Change didn't that happen during the French Revolution? Yeah.. I'm pretty sure it did.. but.. I'd call that goods hootin' Wilton, Thanks for asking. It is a "real gate" made from 3/16 wall rectangle tubing that weighs about 1,500 lbs, 20 ft across, on railroad track to "roll open". When closed, the ends are fully encapsulated with vertical uprights that lock it in place. Sign on front gate reads "Entry beyond this point by invitation only. Use of deadly force authorized." in 5 languages. 20 ft back and to one side are what appears to be 3 graves, 2 with head markers that read "Trespasser #1 and Trespasser #2" ... The third grave site is open [only takes a few minutes with a backhoe] and the head marker for that one reads "Next". To the other side, there is a 4 yr old, jacked up jeep 4X4, with an open beer cooler in the back and it still has the old gate laying in front of it after bulldozing it down. It also has the engine destroyed and hood blown open from a .50 Cal. round going through the block after the un-invited party drove through the gate, destroyed it, then stopped to relieve themselves and get fresh beers.. I happened to be on the mountain watching them when it happened sighting in the .50 cal. for a competition shoot. It seems the one round was all the deterrent force needed to convince them they needed to "walk to town" on their own.. 2,600' shot, 800' elevated position, 3 mph quartering wind, bullet entry point was 2 inches below hood line, trajectory was then through the top of the water pump [V8 engine] center of engine, through the cam, rods, crank rear 3 journals, clutch, then the transmission, exit approximately center of transmission. The other part of this I think the greenie weenies at CARB miss is that by using more fuel we require more fuel trucks and refining capacity both of which produce more greenhouse gasses. How does injecting DEF in the exhaust effect mileage? The effort to do the injection? IIRC, I get the same mileage as you in the 2012 Passat. I didn't care one way or the other about "green" - I bought it because it was the only Diesel brand I could afford. I have an irrational desire to drive behind a Diesel engine. Just finished a podcast interview with author of a recent book on "green" companies, and by chance the lady owns a VW. Gasser, not diesel. Lady is "green" herself through and through, and was adamant that she was going to sell her VW and get a Tesla as soon as she could afford one. From her perspective, VW has betrayed us all and is destroying the planet and is now so evil she pretty much said she hopes they rot in hell. I would imagine that a lot of the left feels the same way, and so that Jalopnik story may be credible. One clever caller asked about the sustainability / availability / future of lithium (for Li-ion batteries), and she confessed that she didn't know a thing about that. Hmmm, don't think I'm going to buy that book. - Max Charleston SC On Wed, Sep 30, 2015 at 11:05 AM, Rich Thomas via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > > http://jalopnik.com/that-angry-wise-ass-portland-note-left-on-a-vw-diesel-w-1733700671 > > --R > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I bought VW diesels because they're fun to drive an economical. I don't think I'd buy one newer than 2005 because of the DEF/DPF (diesel exhaust fluid/diesel particulate filter) both of which cost mileage.
