Mathieu - First, glad to hear that the driver came through OK. But the damage really doesn't look that hard to repair, assuming the door frames aren't distorted. By missing the bumper, the energy was absorbed by the fender sheet metal, from what I can see - which would mean that the frame and bumper supports are still pretty much in alignment. What I see from the pictures is a left rear fender, trunklid, and under the trunk sheetmetal. I acquired an '83SD with similar damage, and a very good body shop made it look like new for under 2.5K! With the insurance payout, you could end up with a very nice car - one that you know, have invested in, and probably better than what you can find on the market. The 601 (4 cylinder - 72 hp used in '84-'85) were very economical (35+ mpg), the 602.91s (5 cylinder normally aspirated ~90 hp used from '86-89) were NOT as economical especially with the usual automatic transmission) and the 602.96 engine (used in the rare - only 1400 imported - 190D 2.5 turbo - 125 hp in '87) is a blast - very fast and still economical on the highway. All are good engines. Only problem is that all can develop head gasket leaks (into/out of the oil passage). I've had to replace ONE head gasket and there is a slight oil ooze from a couple of mine (that have not gotten any worse over MANY years). That's most common problem with those engines. I used State Farm for the first 12 years of my driving record. Last summer they had the gall to send me a letter requiring $35 for each of my 2 cars or the policy would lapse. I called and asked about this, and the reason was because I had been rerated as a youthful driver at 26y10m of age. They sent me a $140 check for my 25th birthday, and now they wanted half of it back. I asked why, I have been with the company for the first 12 years of my driving, with NO accidents and only ONE ticket. WTF, is this how corperate America treats loyal good customers? It so happened that I received an offer for a quote from AIG (through a fraternal church group) on the very same day that SF sent the request for more 's. I called them up and was quoted $140 LESS than my raised/new premium's would be with SF. So, I called my SF agent to see if there was anything he could do, he said no, and I told him where he could shove the $70 and other premiums, where the sun don't shine. F'in SF! It was NOT emissions related, but related to creep when stopped when you took your foot off the brake. In the early '90s Mercedes saw the error of their ways and allowed the gas transmissions to start in 1st. Cars built a year or two before 1st gear starts became standard COULD be converted (it was NOT a cheap conversion - required that the valve body be removed and some pieces replaced) but cars with transmissions build before that (about '89 and earlier I think) can't be converted (you'd need a completely replace the valve body). I also noticed that at the same time, the warranty description said valve guides - intake wear - worn out. How would the intake be involved in this? I found out more history of the car. Incredibly noisy when compared to the Merc. I think that Merc had a 390 in it. I know it was pretty fast, and got sucky gas mileage. So, in fact, did the Granada. Just about the same mileage but without any of the acceleration. Handled worse in the snow, too, and was less roomy. -- Jim ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
Re: [MBZ] 240D RIP
Matt, It is good to see you on the list, even in less than desirable circumstance. THe good new is that Jennifer was not injured seriously. Loren At 11:38 AM 1/24/2006, you wrote: My fiancee, Jennifer, was rear ended in her 240D this morning. She is OK, the car did its job. Left rear of the car is toasted and there is frame damage. She was hit by a large Ford work van that went over her bumper at about 30-35 mph. I'll post a link to pictures as time allows. Off to battle the insurance company. The car was a rust free 240d w/ manual trans, 180k on the clock, been under my care since 108k miles. A truly nice car that was maintained to the T. I have over $6k in the car. Anyone care to start a pool to see what the insurance will settle at? Strange stains on the dash, mismatched seats... if he loves it that much, I think he ought to keep it...but wait, it's one of those rare million mile with free fuel cars...Where's that 'buy it now' button! -Robert Luther Gulseth wrote: So shiny and attractive, I’m in love with her. [MBZ] Why we drive old Mercedes Benz Cars
Today we learned that a HS friend of my daughter was burned beyond any recognition after her 2005 Toyota hit a rock pillar at the entrance to a park and then burned. It took them almost a week to find out who it was. There was not enough of the vehicle left to get a VIN from, and the aluminum license plates melted away. The fire was fueled not only by gasoline, but by all the plastic inside and outside the vehicle. This is a sickening event, and one that is unlikely in our well designed solid old cars. Many of us have been involved in accidents in our Mercedes and walked away. My daughter was T boned in her SL 2 years ago, and walked away. It was the kind of accident that had reportedly caused many lesser vehicles to burn. Each member of my family has been hit in their Mercedes in the past 4 years. Each has walked or driven away. Fortunately, my last run-in was 23 years ago when the Pinto pulled out into my ol rusty trusty winter 190Dc and was wiped out. I believe my SDL may be the safest car on the road, if there is such a thing with all the idiots they let drive now. Drive safe. Friends don't let friends drive Toyotas, , _, Or __! You fill in the blanks.
[MBZ] Movie car site
Every so often someone asks about cars in the movies. I was watching the Barrett Jackson auction last week and lo and behold someone emailed the program with this site. Thought I'd pass it on. http://www.imcdb.org/index.php Dennis Perkins 84 300SD

Wow! 7 appearances of 110 200D or 200 cars. I have never seen one! It is interesting that many are in the last 10-15 years! Maybe fins will be cool again some year!
