For those experiencing this trouble try ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v22.zip I've fixed a bug in the communication code - the error would have been quite rare. If v21 is working OK, continue using it. The new code uses modified Linux sockets code rather than the old HTTPNET.DLL. If you try this version and still experience troubles, then set "Debug=1" in the primenet.ini file and send me an annotated prime.log file telling me what happened. Also, let me know if any other problem occurs! BTW, RPC support is now gone. Thanks, George P.S. If this works, I'll port it to Linux soon. _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers

RE: Mersenne: Prime freezing when connecting by DSL to Primenet
As Xyzzy mentioned some of our team have had problems with client hanging as well. I personally have seen it in Prime95 and mprime (linux) both ver 21.4.1. In both cases the client occasionally hangs during communication with Primenet. The hang happens at different times in the communication during manual or automatic communication. In Prime95 the client is not completely hung as it still responds to some client menu commands including 'about primenet server' which communicates with the server, however it does not continue factoring or LL testing and if you do a client exit it becomes completely unresponsive. In linux killing and restarting the process seems to work, in Win2000,XP ending the process via task manager works. Another team member has reported having to reboot to recover in Win98. There seem to be no side effect to killing the hung client unless the client was in the process of getting work in which case sometimes you are left with exponents showing on your Primenet report which are not in your worktodo.ini. In this case adding the entries to your worktodo seems to work. I have done some packet captures of a normal communication and a failed communication which with my limited experience appeared to show a missing packet from the server prior to the hang. These were supplied to George and Primenet and I have exchanged a few email about the specifics of my set-up. I'm sure George and Primenet would appreciate as much info as possible from those getting the error. In my case OS - Win2000, WinXP, Linux Redhat7 Client - Prime95 21.4.1 and Mprime 21.4.1 Internet - Adsl via btopenworld.co.uk with Win2000 internet connection sharing. Rob Reid www.teamprimerib.com

Usually it happens when fetching a new exponent, once it happened when reporting a result, but I haven't seen it happen when updating expected completion times and all my machines are set to update every day. I am running version 21.4.1. I had suspected it was happening because of colliding with other traffic at PrimeNet, and PrimeNet never completing the transaction for some reason, leaving Prime95 hanging. But I can't be sure. It's been a minor annoyance since the machine doesn't lock up hard on me. _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers
Re: Mersenne: Prime freezing when connecting by DSL to Primenet
I wonder whether this is caused by Firewalling software or automatic virus detection software. Has this avenue been investigated? Some of this software might have the power to block network connections or basically suspend the program trying to make them until such time as Wild guesses: 1. Is the server actually closing its connection to the client (and vice versa)? I seem to remember seeing an active connection listed in netstat even thought the communication had finished and I'd dropped the dial-up connection. If the firewall software was trying to do some sort of content verification or other checking, might it be waiting for the connection to close? 2. Is something trying to do a reverse DNS lookup on the server before it allows it and failing? Does the server have a reverse DNS entry? (I've just checked and it doesn't.) 3. The fact that the HTTP request asks for an ".exe" (/cgi-bin/pnHttp.exe) might cause some sort of virus checker to kick in and insist on interfering with the reply. 4. Is the server somehow being blocked? If there's some sort of URL/content checker interposed in the connection, is it classing the server as an "unknown" group (we assume we're not in the "sex and violence" category :-) and trying to filter it or something? It seems to me that if the connection never closes, and there's virus/content checking in place, then there might be an explanation for a very long wait. Perhaps I've been able to offer some clues. I've been on DSL for several years now, and autoconnect ISDN-via-ethernet for 3-4 years before that, and have several clients running on machines that are on much higher speed connections, and have most of them set to check in every 2 days (that way I can easily find out if a client has stalled), and *NONE* of my 10 or so clients have ever had any problems connecting to primenet. Now, I don't use AOL at all. My ISP is a regional who uses static IP bridging, I'm connected to the DSL modem by ethernet, and don't run any special software, just TCP/IP. _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.ndatech.com/mersenne/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers

Re: Mersenne: Prime freezing when connecting by DSL to Primenet
We have been experiencing a similar problem for about 2-3 months... It has been talked about quite a bit in our forum... http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=122 097561&m=3680928671&p=58 Try looking around page 50 or so... I wish I could narrow it down some more, but our search engine is kinda lame... Our belief is that the error is on the server end... I can sometimes duplicate the error by sending large amounts of traffic to PrimeNet... I tested this by increasing the number of allowable exponents in the prime.ini file to 999 exponents and I then set the CPU speed to 1 and the days of work to 90... This allowed my client to pull hundreds of factoring jobs off the server... What happens then is when the client tries to send in the expected completion dates for all of those exponents it sometimes crashes... Personally, I have been very lucky in that I only experience the error when I try to, but one of our team members gets it nearly every time... We initally suspected that his client was corrupt or that maybe he had a physical hardware problem, but since we were able to duplicate the error then we decided that it must be a server issue... Several members on the team have been in contact with George and Brad about this... I don't know what the status is, but a simple fix is to set the client update to 28 days and download a big enough exponent that you won't have to connect very often... Basically, the solution is to minimize communication with PrimeNet... :) Also, backing up the Prime95 folder is encouraged before any major transaction...
