Hi there! I think that the fine white crystals you see are sulphate efflorescences that are on all specimens of Orgueil and are caused by terrestriallisation ie reaction of moisture with various compounds within the matrix. See Gounelle Zolensky, A terrestrial origin for sulfate veins in CI1 chondrites published in the Meteoritics and Planetary Science, Vol. 36, No. 10, Oct 2001 for the complete article! [meteorite-list] Re: Mercury Meteorite Puzzle
Hi Ron, all - Most fascinating to read the comments on the formation of olivine, particularly as it relates to parent body size(s). Pressure seems to be the key. It strikes me that there would have been at least 2 sources of pressure - one, gravity; and two, the cooled outer crust pressing against the still molten core. I imagine one could write up a nifty computer program relating the two, dump in the olivine formation pressure, et voila. Another question crosses my mind on this, which is whether anyone has ever added together the estimated masses of each of the known LPBE impactors. all the best - ep --- Ron Baalke [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The evidence of linking E chrondites to Mercury or Venus is that the pyroxene in these meteorites contains no iron, only magnesium. The pyroxene in most meteorites would be expected to have a ratio of magnesium and iron depending upon the availability of oxygen. The lack of iron in the pyroxene in the E chrondites is due to a low oxygen content, and one way to explain this if the meteorite had formed somewhere close to the Sun. Hence, if these E chrondites had originated from Mercury or Venus, then that would explain their lack of iron. This would also apply if the parent body was an asteroid that formed inside of Earth's orbit. Could be, except that olivine is found as massive formations of large olivine crystals without an iron matrix, just not in meteorites. One notable location is the San Carlos Apache reservation where unaltered mantle material was erupted to the surface. It is now mined for gem quality olivine, commonly known as peridot. So the question remains if there are olivine crystals 60 to 100 kilometers deep on earth (the depth of the peridot source) why haven't we found meteorites composed of just olivine crystals? 99% of meteorites come from asteroids, so your Earth analogy is not very applicable. There are large deposits of diamonds and gold in Earth, too, but I would not expect to find diamond meteorites or gold meteorites. The mineralogy formed inside a low-gravity body like an asteroid is not exactly the same as from the Earth. There is no currently accepted answer. I just suggested a plausible scenario with the iron molten core for asteroid, which you haven't countered, but I'll repeat it for you again. My guess would be the olivine crytals came about when the chondrite layer interacted with the molten iron core. Since the olivine is intermixed with the nickel-iron , that implies that they were mixed together when the metal portion was in a hot molten form, which futher implies the chondritic material was exposed to high temperatures and probably some pressure as well. Due to the exposure to the high temperatures, the olivine was converted to a crystalline form. That would explain why you only see the olivine crystals only in pallasites, the boundary layer between the metal core and the chondritic mantle. [meteorite-list] Re: IMCA
All, Regarding the IMCA and eBay, I think that only positive messages should be used. Something like, Member in good standing of the IMCA. All material sold is 100% guaranteed to be genuine. Then include the logo. Simple as that. Anyone who looks around eBay should notice this logo and text on a lot of meteorite auctions. If they're smart, they should wonder why the guy claiming to have a Leonid Meteor for sale does not have such a guarantee. This positive message says _nothing_ about anyone else or their auctions. Thus, eBay can't get its knickers in a bunch over it. The only problem is the subtle implication that any dealers who are not members are somehow suspect. Unfortunately, that problem is there no matter what. Any time a business is not a member of a professional organization (take the Better Business Bureau for example) people may wonder why not. Still, I see it as an important first step. SOMETHING needs to be done, and eBay won't/can't do it. Who else does that leave? Just us. [meteorite-list] More details.... thanks! Got had need help.
Hello list! First off, let me thank again everyone who responded so quicklyand thoughtfullyto my dilemma. I so much appreciate the kindness and generosity of this list. What a great group of people! Since I have given the seller ample time to make good, and right this situation to no avail I'm going to post all the details of the transaction in hopes that no one else will run into the same problems. The material is pale and orangy/tan in color. Some pieces are slightly attracted to a magnet (but obviously less than to a real CD), and others are not. They are mostly rather flat and angular with many having a layered appearance. The heft is also noticeably lighter than Canyon Diablos. Yes, the purchase was made on Ebay. The auction # is 1088631225 and is still available for viewing. The title of the auction is "30+ Pieces of Canyon Diablo Meteorite". As you can see, the photo is not the best. I have been tracking the sellerclosely and they have not posted any more "meteorite" auctions since the one I bought, just garage sale junk. I would be very suprised if they are members of this list, or of the "meteorite community" in general. There were some auctions of this material sold before mine, however. I do not recognize any of the bidders or winners of these auctions but I am not really familiar with people's Ebay user IDs. The user's name is Judith McCabe, with a user ID of "j.c.z.inc". This is a new user ID. The one in place for the sale of the "meteorite" material was "bubbamisen". There was no return address on the box I received in the mail, but the post mark was Oswego, NY. After expressing my dissatisfaction and wish to return the merchandise, this is the response I received from the seller: "The items sent you are deffinetly canyon diablo meteorite as listed in issue 5 of the meteorite encyclopedia. If as you say you have indeed been a dealer you would know this. We have over 150 satisfied customers with this material. And we can prove the material was collected from the crater rim. " I emailed back with a very straightforward and polite reply, explaining to the best of my ability why I felt the material was misrepresented and asking for an address to return the material. I received no reply. If anyone has any knowledge of this person, or this auction, or has had dealings with her please let me know (on or offlist). I would be interested to know. I'll keep everyone posted with what happens, just so you know. I'm also going to try to take some pictures this evening of the material I was sent next to some known Canyon Diablos, and if I can get a goodimage I will post it here so you can see it firsthand. Thank you again everyone, and any more replies I get will be most appreciated. Re: [meteorite-list] Got had and need help!
What you might want to do is find one of the many references that explains how to tell a meteorite from a meteorwrong, go down the list, and check off all that apply (i.e., meteorites are magnetic to varying degrees. Shale is not.) Submit the list to the insurance company. You might also want to bust out the listing in the MetBull or other resource for Canyon Diablo and write a short note explaining that the material in this box DOES NOT fit the official description. Hope this helps; it SUCKS to be taken. Tracy Latimer __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] IMCA
Hi everyone, This email covers a few things that have been discussed the past few days concerning the IMCA and possible meteorwrongs on eBay. First of all, thanks to everyone who saw the discussions and decided to become a member. We're up to 129 members now and still growing. As the saying goes, the more the merrier! As for statements to accompany eBay auctions, as it stands now we already ask people to use the phrase Authenticity GUARANTEED underneath their logo. When we formed, the intent of the IMCA was to help promote the people who agree to be judged by higher standards and not to attempt to hinder the sales of non-members. The IMCA does not control the meteorite market nor do we want to. We help ensure that people who are members are honest people who can be trusted to sell exactly what they say they're selling. Someone on here (I apologize I can't remember who) suggested that a website be made showing a list of people who are known to be safe to buy from. To those of you who have not visited the IMCA's website at www.meteoritecollectors.org such a website already exists. We maintain a page with all of our current members, their IMCA number, and their email address at www.meteoritecollectors.org/numbers.htm. Again, on behalf of myself and the other IMCA directors, thank you to all of you who have joined and/or supported us in the wild ride. Also, to those of you who have not joined, I would like to invite each of you to come join a great bunch of people who love the rocks we all love so much. Jeannie, The material you bought could be oxidized Canyon Diablo material collected on the surface just outside the canyon rim. H. H. Nininger used some of this in some copies of his little booklet, A Comet Strikes The Earth. This may or may not be what you have, but you might have someone check it out for you. The person should however return your money if you are not satisfied, even if it is from Meteor Crater. Thomas H. Webb On Tue, 21 May 2002, MuseumStore/NatureSource wrote: Hi listees! Well, now this person refuses to let me send the material back for a refund, even though I have nicely explained why this material is not what I wanted and I am unhappy with it. Since I purchased the material with a credit card, I have decided to dispute the charge with the credit card company on the grounds that the material was misrepresented and that the seller refuses to take the merchandise back for a refund. I am really hoping that this can be resolved. Either way, I guess I learned a good lesson. The credit card company is asking for documentation explaining why the material sent is not the same as what was described.
