[meteorite-list] Stone cairns on dry lakes
Hi Charlie and List, I wonder, if in some far distant future, an archaeologist will write a thesis on The stone cairns of Roach and other dry lakes of the Far West: towards a solution. :-) You're on to me! While I admit to a certain altruism for helping my fellow meteorite hunters by piling up all the offending rocks, my subconscious plan all along has been to build a sort of Kilroy was here legacy with all these cairns. Hard not to be motivated to leave some lasting calling card when you find so many Native American artifacts while searching for meteorites. Unfortunately, Mother Nature does not share my enthusiasm for tagging: it is amazing how quickly these cairns get scattered by water and wind. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Still many members like Michel Franco (sorry Michel but you are just only ONE example for what I want to say becuase you recently did it) have not accepted Steve's idea. So I don't know why I (or the others) should not make any announcements for my (or their) ebay auctions in future again. Nobody cared about except very few members like Mike Farmer, Dean Bessey, Matteo Chinellato, Phillipe Thomas, Me and two or three others, I THINK WE DID NOT REACH A NUMBER OF 10 OF MEMBERS who accepted this and now these members have a disadvantage as they did not post to the list since the ebay-group Steve created exists!! RE: [meteorite-list] ebay listings, steve choner's attempt for a new group
Chirsian and all: The list policy is already clear. Policy#8 states - "Do not post - major advertisement- emails to the list - use a 'sale' link". This policy was later ammended on the list to require the word "AD" in the subject line so that list members would be clear that the email contained an ad. I think the problem arrose when some list members posted their ebay auctions daily, spamming the list. For example one member in particular would say "I have ebay auctions ending in 7 days" then "I have ebay auctions ending in 6 days", then "I have ebay auctions ending in 5 days", etc etc. You get the idea. Members won't even quit fighting and using vulgar language on this list which is a much much bigger problem than theoccasional ebay ad announcement. As long as the word "AD" appears in the subject, I do not see a problem as this allows all list members to decide for themselves if they wish to open an "AD" email. Randy From: "Ing. Hello list, I can't find a proper definition of the schlieren bands, nor what causes them to be in ataxites. Not in my books, nor in the web. [meteorite-list] AD/Sale: 1 x 1 inch boxes and ebay sale
Hello Everyone, First, to address Christian's concerns. BEGIN LEGAL DISCLAIMER: These are just my opinions and mine alone. I do not have any malicious or libelous intentions toward anyone and I am perfectly happy with the knowledge that others do not agree with me. Live and let live, I'm okay, you're okay, one size fitsall, objects in mirror are closer than they appear, do not bend, fold or mutilate, don't eat yellow snow, dry clean only yada, yada, etc..., etc... END LEGAL DISCLAIMER I won't join the yahoo group to post ebay announcements because of two reasons. It is my understanding, and I could be wrong about this, that one has to be an IMCA member in order to post (or at least IMCA membership is preferred), and, for reasons which I will not elaborate,I have no intention of joining the IMCA. Second, the idea of a whole list devoted to ebay auctions sounds awfully silly to me. I know how to get to ebay and how to check for meteorite auctions and I know how to bid and sell on ebay. Everyone else whois reading these wordsknows how to do these tasks as well andI really don't see the need for a separate list devoted to things which Iand others already know how to do. And, well, I guess there is a third reason. Given that somelist members seem to enjoy participating in mud-slinging, libelous posts, threats and accusations, childish behavior and general intolerance of personality/cultural differences among others, Ihave no problem with comparatively innocuous and at least in some way meteorite-related ebay ads. Besides, apparently Art doesn't mind either. Now... I recently got in a bunch of those 1 x 1 inch boxes that some of us use to house micromounts, the ones with the foam pads. I normally sell them for .50 each but for list members they are.35 each, any quantity, plus a small shipping charge. Also, beginning tomorrow evening EST and lasting for several days, I will be selling some meteorites and supplies on ebay. I really don't know what some of what I haveis worth, so I will start all auctions at .01 and let the free market decide. These include a huge 619 gram individual of NWA 869, a 383 gram Odessa, a slice of Valera (the cow killer from Argentina), a crusted Pultusk endpiece, display/storage cases, a lot consisting of 5 meteorite books and 5 meteorites, and a huge collection of maybe 40 or sospecimens, complete with storage box and cases. Maybe even some cutting and polishing equipment (have not decided on that yet). Some auctions are underway already and some won't start until later but they are all only 3 day auctions. MetCollector comes to you as an email attachment, and if you order it off-ebay, it will only cost you $45, because I save on the ebay fees then. If you are interested, please be sure to read the ebay ad for technical specifications - people having XP or Windows 2000 and Access have no problems using the database (the only exception is Steve A., who can't get it to work - hint: maybe some other owner of the program could step in there and help him, I am quite positive it is NOT incompatibility but some misconception on the human side of the equation). There is NO list policy banning the announcement of ebay auctions on this list. It was agreed some time ago that the word "ad" should appear in the subject line so that list members not wanting to read advertisements did not have to even open the email. Check the list policies and you see that I am correct. http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing_list.shtml Just because some list members HATE ebay does not mean they have the power to ban ebay ads. They should direct their efforts to more important list problems such as vulgarity and flame wars. So post away Michel. I would love to know when your ebay ads appear. It looks surprisingly nice at 10x and 30x in a stereomicroscope with a fresh black and white crystal-like matrix in which is embedded a white chondrule that takes up about 1/3 of the specimen. Re: [meteorite-list] AD vs. SALE or AD SALE
Perhaps this can be of some use. Rather than dealing with how to moderate the list, this relates to the actual mechanics of whatever marketing is permitted by the moderator's rules in effect: Assuming the restrictions or lack of them relating to selling, as applicable, it would be helpful to distinguish between SALE and AD in the title. SALE: Items being commercialized at seller determined preferential prices or exclusively (at first) to the list. AD: Items being commercialized in general where listmembers don't have an edge, especially Ads on eBay, a commercial website, etc. (except a commercial website with a real sale exclusive to the list members). This way, the benefit goes two ways for those dealing with sales, which theoretically benefits the the whole list. And ads are easy to sift through as some prefer. A little give and take on both sides could be a healthy business practice that might remove some rusty feelings? thoughts? Saludos Doug Dawn Mexico

Dear Sick Meteorite Friends, We have lots of flu going around and the weather is rather, well, Christmas-y I have my favorite colds and flu season Chicken soup recipe with meteorite as the secret ingredient for your dining and healthful pleasure. Start with a half pound of carrots clean and slice, throw in pot Chop 1/2 large onion.. throw in pot chop 1/2 cup celeryyou guessed it. any other vegetables, left overs..follow above trend. Throw in a couple pounds of deboned chicken thighs, and let the pot cook for an hour, so the carrots cook good, lots of pepper, little salt, celery seed, garlic powder, a little red pepper, make it hot. Cook slowly for a while. When you get tired of waiting, throw in some whole-wheat egg noodles and start the count down. when noodles are just about done, now's the time to throw in an appropriate amount of Dean's Bessy's little secret spice particles from your favorite desert. Chow down! The garlic and onion have allicin in them, a natural antibiotic that doesn't remove good bacteria that synthetic antibiotics do. The chicken has it's special health attributes as well. Hope you all are not sick but if you arethe soup is good and the meteorites add that festive holiday touch. May be accompanied by my grandmothers favorite onion sandwich for a double whammy on the colds and flu. Get well soon! Dave F. John List, MY vote: Well said John. Concise and to the point! The adds, eBay and otherwise,DO relate to our subject. But there's a miserable bunch of spam that doesn't, and I hate to admit that this email from me is closer to the latter than to the former. Sorry. The problem with the separate Yahoo eBay list is that most of us have inboxes overflowing with garbage (and the meteorite list, junk and all, is some of theGOOD stuff). But I'm not shopping for another site to visit to get the rest of the story; instead, I need a way to simplify the inbox. As for eBay, I go straight to eBay and look at the "closing today" category. (As a result, I miss some "Buy Now" opportunities. I only hear about them on the list). Further, some of us old dogs aren't even looking for new tricks. We feel pretty proud just doing the things we know. I've learned my way around this list, website management, eBay, and even feel like I know some of you that I've neveryet met! I've got no problem with the concept of the eBay list, but I haven't even seriously considered going there. If I represent any significant sector of this readership, THAT may be a problem. Here's my idea: Let's keep the eBay METEORITE announcements here, and all the METEORITE adds, and send the female dog, whine, and personal attack sessions that have no METEORITE info, availability, questions, stories, cautions, etc., to some other location ( I wouldn't even need to know the location--).THAT would simplify my inbox! [meteorite-list] Evidence Mounts of Earlier Asteroid Annihilation
http://www.dallasnews.com/texasliving/stories/121503dnlivextinction.1673c.html Evidence mounts of earlier asteroid annihilation Meteorite fragments, metal from Antarctica may boost theory By ALEXANDRA WITZE The Dallas Morning News December 14, 2003 SAN FRANCISCO - Scientists have come up with new evidence that a giant space rock slammed into Earth and killed off most of its species not once in history, but twice. Schoolchildren can relate the story of how the dinosaurs and many other creatures went extinct after an asteroid or comet hit the Earth 65 million years ago. But an even greater die-off occurred 250 million years ago in which as many as 90 percent of all species on Earth were snuffed out. In 2001, a group of researchers made headlines when they argued that this extinction, too, took place when a comet or asteroid smashed into the Earth. Now, the scientists have reported new proof of a cosmic collision - tiny fragments, unearthed in Antarctica, of what they say is the killer rock itself. If confirmed, the finding wouldn't be just the smoking gun linking the mass extinction to an extraterrestrial impact; it would be the bullet itself. The new work, reported last month in Science and elaborated upon last week at an American Geophysical Union meeting, hasn't met with universal acceptance. Other scientists say it's hard to imagine how pieces of a space rock could survive for 250 million years, rather than weathering away as meteorites often do. It's mind-boggling to think that they could have survived 250 million years in those sediments, says Frank Kyte, a geochemist at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1998, Dr. Kyte reported finding a piece of the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs in a core drilled from the bottom of the North Pacific Ocean. Over time, he has convinced most other specialists that the fragment is, indeed, a chunk of the doomsday rock. Something similar may have just been found in 250 million-year-old rocks from Graphite Peak, Antarctica. Gregory Retallack, a geologist at the University of Oregon, collected the rocks in the early 1990s, looking at the geologic record preserving the boundary between the Permian and Triassic geologic periods. Soon after, Dr. Retallack reported finding quartz grains in those rocks that had been marked by the shock of an extraterrestrial impact. He proposed that a collision had taken place 250 million years ago, but he never convinced many other researchers that he was right. Things changed in 2001, when a team led by Luann Becker, now at the University of California, Santa Barbara, reported finding molecules called buckyballs in 250-million-year-old rocks from Meishan, China. The soccer-ball-shaped buckyballs contained extraterrestrial gases, Dr. Becker's team argued, which suggested that an impact had occurred. Since then, Dr. Becker's team has gathered more evidence to support the impact theory. The recent Science paper describes the discovery of about 40 meteorite fragments from the same Antarctic rocks studied by Dr. Retallack. Chemical studies of the fragments show them to belong to the family of meteorites called chondrites, says Asish Basu, a geochemist at the University of Rochester and lead author on the paper. The scientists also say that blobs of metal found in the rock may have been formed by an extraterrestrial impact. Other researchers have argued that similar blobs found in the Chinese rocks may have condensed out of the vapor of an impact cloud. Finally, at the San Francisco meeting last week, his team introduced a third line of evidence - small glassy drops that also could have been produced during the searing heat of impact. But David Kring, an impact expert at the University of Arizona, says that all three lines of evidence can be explained without invoking an extraterrestrial impact. For instance, the meteorite fragments could have been a sprinkle of small meteorites like those that regularly bombard the planet, a possibility that Dr. Basu says he has ruled out. Why would they be concentrated right where Retallack found shocked quartz? he adds. Perhaps the biggest question is how the meteorite fragments managed to preserve so well over 250 million years. But the Antarctic rocks contain layers of clay that could have encapsulated and preserved the meteorite bits, argues Dr. Basu. There are special geologic circumstances in which they could survive, he says. So far, the team has found no hint of iridium, a relatively rare element that appears in extraterrestrial rocks. Finding a worldwide layer of iridium helped clinch the impact hypothesis for the dinosaur extinction. But the space rock may have been low in iridium, or geologic forces may have churned up the Antarctic rocks enough to dilute the iridium signal, Dr. Basu says. The questions may be resolved relatively soon. Dr. Retallack is in Antarctica now, collecting more
