Hi Adam and team,

Congrats on your successful trip.

We can not even try to describe one of the meteorites because it is so
bizarre, smells like another contest!

Hoping you publish a picture of this soon so everyone can take a stab at
it. It should be fun, and great new content for the list.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Mojave and Sahara Teams are Both Back

Dear List Members,

The Mojave and Sahara teams are both back safely and in time for the
holidays. We want to thank everybody for their patience in regards to
us
answering our emails. We also want to thank those who bid on our
auctions
while we were away. We are now caught up with shipping for those who
have
been waiting patiently.

A lot of firsts happened on both expeditions.

The Mojave trip was the first time we had a chance to seriously check
out
the dried out lake beds, what a thrill for all of us. You members who
live
down there are in a beautiful part of this country. We wish we lived
closer
and could only imagine the fun. We actually enjoyed some success with
the
finding of what we believe to be a new cold find with three like
meteorites.
We are submitting samples next week. It looks like an un-metamorphosed
W1
chondrite with a very fresh fusion crust and interior. It was an
excellent
adventure for Steve Drummond who found his very first meteorite ever,
congratulations again, Steve!

The Sahara expedition produced the most fantastic material we have seen
come
out of one place. This is the first time a scientist went in the field
to
Northwest Africa with a group of collectors for the purpose of acquiring
rare meteorites. Dr. Irving, a former NASA scientist and current
research
scientist with the University of Washington decided it was time to check
out
this region that produces such excellent research material. He was not
disappointed and having a scientist along goes a long way in adding
credibility to the NWA situation. List member, Jason Phillips joined
the
expedition and demonstrated great value with his meticulous observations
and
note taking, something that should be done on every expedition,
congratulations on a job well-done Jason.

Everybody is happy about making it back in one piece and with, what we
are
all calling, the mother load. We are already dreaming of Tucson and the
spring time expeditions. The second part of the treasure hunt has just
begun as we are preparing this material for study. We can not even try
to
describe one of the meteorites because it is so bizarre, smells like
another
contest! If somebody were to tell us all of the features contained in
this
one meteorite, we would have taken them for crazy. I guess we will have
to
show it in Tucson after it is studied to find other believers that such
a
thing really can exist.

Wishing Everybody Happy Holidays and the Very Best,

Adam and Greg Hupe
The Hupe Collection,

[meteorite-list] OT--Victorian Time Machine

2003-12-24 Thread Francis Graham
Mark Ford wrote an interesting piece about a
telescope between two mirrors as a sort of Victorian
Time Machine, using the infinite mirror effect.
Mark, what book did you get that from?
  It got me thinking.
Human beings need about a tenth of a second to know
if anything is happening. If a light goes off, to see
it off, in comparison with another light that goes
suddenly off, you need about a tenth of a second
between them.
If two mirrors are 1 km apart you'd have to look
back to the 30,000 th reflected image to see the light
still on while the light is off, by a tenth of a
second.
How many images you can see back depends on the
observers aspect. This is why when you use the
infinite mirror effect at home you can't see all the
way to infinity, but your head seems to get in the
way. It's best not to have a telescope between the
mirrors, but look through the scope at a flat diagonal
mirror between the mirrors. A tiny diagonal mirror of
3 mm size in comparison with two mirrors 10 m in size
would get you near 30,000 images.
You also need to cut the light quickly. Bulbs are
too slow. Maybe an electric arc with a nanosecond
surge protector, as can be purchased. Deliberately
surge, and in a nanosecond the arc is off. Get a very
bright source; you are looking at 30,000 km. of
reflections.
So using two infinite mirror effect mirrors as a
time machine to look back one tenth second and see
one light on after it is off is just barely do-able,
it would seem, using some big mirrors and a nice big
field on a dark moonless night, and careful alignment
to insure perpendicularity (the curvature of the Earth
would have to be accounted for).

Yes, but if each mirror can only reflect back 99% of the incoming light (most
high end telescope mirrors do worse) the image will become impossibly dim
long before the 30,000th reflection.

[meteorite-list] Mars Express Update - December 24, 2003

2003-12-24 Thread Ron Baalke

ESA News
http://www.esa.int

24 December 2003

Mars Express status report ...

At 09:30 CET today [0830 UTC], the Mars Express orbiter was 200,000 kilometres
from Mars and 156,000,000 kilometres from Earth. The orbiter is on its final
planned course for Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI).

The spacecraft will hit its intended MOI 'bull's eye' point, 414 kilometres
above the Martian surface, to within an accuracy of six kilometres.

The retargeting manoeuvre performed by ESOC Mission Control on Saturday, 20
December, was so accurate that the additional 'fine-tuning' manoeuvre scheduled
for 23 December was judged to be unnecessary and not performed.

Mission Control is currently placing the spacecraft in its final configuration
for MOI. The fuel tanks are being heated and the latch valves checked in
preparation for a 34-minute main engine burn, due to place the spacecraft into
Martian orbit in the early hours of Christmas morning.

All non-essential equipment is currently being turned off to minimise the
possibility of the spacecraft entering 'safe mode'. This process is due to
conclude around 12:00 CET [1100 UTC] when the spacecraft's Solid State Mass
Memory is switched off. No further commands are due to be sent to Mars Express
until after MOI.

Flight Director Michael McKay said, From this point the tension really starts
to grow. We don't have a lot more to do except watch and wait. The time within
which we can do something reduces very rapidly.

But if anything unexpected does occur then we would be ready to jump in and
recover the situation, applying all the professionalism and skill of the ESA and
industrial teams gathered here at ESOC Mission Control.

Mars Express status report ...

At 12:00 CET today [1100 UTC], the Mars Express orbiter was 169,000 kilometres
from Mars and 156,167,000 kilometres from Earth.

The orbiter is now in the final configuration for Mars Orbit Insertion. No more
commands are being sent to the spacecraft until after its capture by Mars.

Both the Mars Express orbiter and the Beagle 2 lander have a velocity relative
to Mars of 2.8 kilometres per second, increasing under the influence of Martian
gravity.

At 12:00 CET, the two spacecraft were 2300 kilometres apart, and diverging at a
rate of 6.5 metres per second.

Mars Express status report ...

As of 2200 CET [2100 UTC] on 24 December, Mars Express is 66800 km from Mars and
the mission is proceeding as planned. ESOC Mission Control data on the velocity
of Mars Express show that the pull of Martian gravity is continually increasing.

This gravitational influence is as predicted, and serves as an independent
confirmation that the spacecraft is on its planned course. It is the force of
gravity that will place Mars Express in orbit around Mars at 0418 CET [0318 UTC]
on Christmas morning, following the end of the 34-minute main engine burn.

As of 0200 CET [0100 UTC] Mars Express is 23700 km from Mars. At 0231 CET [0131
UTC] Mars Express is scheduled to commence a half-hour slew manoeuvre that uses
its reaction wheels to line up its main engine for Mars Orbit Insertion.

The manoeuvre will mean the spacecraft's high-gain antenna is no longer pointing
at Earth and so telemetry will be lost until 0900 CET.
