[meteorite-list] A note from E.T.

2004-04-01 Thread edwinthompson
Hello list, for years several friends in the world of meteorites have been forwarding
the "cat fights" to me. Without being present on the list I can still remember the
good ole' days of Michael Casper fame and this guy who came out of nowhere after
buying Ray Meyer's collection for a start-up meteorite business, built his business
into something that inspired many to get on-line with Space Rocks and then disappeared
into obscurity and the world of coins from where he came, as did David Bowers and Ray
Meyers and several other collectors. Over the years I've watched a lot of changes, no
matter how tough, they have all been good. I can remember when there were only 6
meteorite dealers on the planet. I can remember 15 years of begging Berbers to keep an
eye out for rocks from the sky on their trips back to Algeria and Mauritania and Libya
on camel trails to get more fossils to sell at the markets in Morocco. Little did I
know that that Zagora in the 1980's or that first 138 kilos of El Hammami Mountains
laid out in front of me in the desert in November of 1997, would turn into this
wonderful flood of amazing material for all of us to share and enjoy. Little did I
know that the first e-mail I received from Dr. Candace Kohl at my office in 1992 on my
new IBM 486 computer would turn into this e-market we have today (back then only
government employees and institutions even had email). I remember Glenn and Margaret
Huss helping me build my slide collection for the meteorite lectures that I did three
times a day, three days a week, every week, forty eight shows a year for 12 years from
Seattle to San Diego to Tulsa Oklahoma, Salt Lake City, Denver, Tucson and El Paso. It
was a hard grind but somebody had to get out there and build my customer base and
nobody else was going to do it for me. Besides, I just couldn't see stepping on the
toes of those few dealers that were making their livings by putting an advertisement
in Sky and Telescope magazine, etc. Good guys have left us, in the science and in the
hobby, hopefully good people are following in their foot steps. But with the great
change has come an amazing opportunity for all of us to benefit from this time in
living history. We have the chance to collect and preserve a mass of educational
material for people now and a thousand years from now to enjoy, share, study, lust
after and learn from. For all of us this science and hobby is for the fun and pleasure
of learning and observing. Collecting these rocks from space and studying them is a
dream come true for all of us, a tactile experience of passion for the mind and the
soul.
Years ago, a book dealer who used to display in Tucson said, "are all meteorite
dealers pirates?". He was fondly joking about the way we would all cheat lie and fight
for the first chance at his books on meteorites and tektites. I thought about it for a
minute and said "yes, I guess we are, we sail about looking for the next bounty and we
all try to beat the other guy to the next treasure, there is no market structure, just
sell as you can when and where you can. We lust after these stones as if they were
gold and jewels" And he said " yeah and that's not to say anything about all those
knives in the back!". We both laughed at the truth of it.
So when my most prolific message forwarding friend lost his job and consequently lost
his Internet access to the list, I found myself missing all of the fun, all the cat
fights! A wise and wonderful motivational speaker Steve Chandler who used to be a
sports writer in Tucson has many times said in his books and lectures " Don't get mad,
get better". So in the name of fun and science and for the benefit of collectors,
students, scientists, teachers, curators and public and private collections everywhere
and for all time, keep up the good work everyone. Keep talking and fighting and
arguing and laughing and hunting and lusting for more meteorites. Keep looking for the
next treasure out there, keep spending your dollars and keep making trades, keep
innovating new ways to beat the other guy to the bounty. We will all come and go, for
all of us the end of the trail is the same. But these collections that we are building
will go on. These specimens are out of the weather and into the hands of curators both
amateur and professional. But someday we are all gone and most of these rocks will
eventually end up in the hands of science and museums. So all that we do now, good or
bad, ends up as good, as long as the specimens never disappear and as long as every
specimen is well documented and labeled. John Wasson once said to Ruben and Warren and
I, "What about the student a thousand years from now?". Think about that people, what
we do now effects people a hundred years from now and a thousand years from now. There
is a finite amount of material out there. We are in a blossom of historic discovery
right now, we are living history that will fill the book

Hi all,
For those list members who have not had the pleasure of meeting
ET in Tucson or his traveling road show, this is one of THE original
meteorite dealers. Talk about NWA ET brought out El Hammami
through the mountains on sweating camels way back when - way
before Dean Bessey (arguably "The King of NWA") ever smashed
out his first Bessey Speck.
ET was the first dealer from whom I bought meteorites when I
started collecting and has always, especially in the beginning, been
a major source of material for me as a dealer as well as being generous
with information. He is also a most pleasant individual to "hang" out
with at any show and conversations really do tend to run as deep as
his words of wisdom presented below.
Best wishes, Michael

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list sign out

2004-04-01 Thread Michael L Blood
Hi Pierre-Marie & All,
Well said, BUT there are 3 MAJOR problems with your proposed
solution:

1) Art is good enough to sponsor this list, but HARDLY ANY LIVING HUMAN
would have the time to screen every post! This list is set up to function on
automatic.

2) While Art has outlined very clear and sane rules, he is very patient in
allowing room for a "self correcting" forum to allow people to straiten
out when they get out of line. Only a hand full of people have ever been
even suspended and only a few have been banished. And believe me,
they ALL blatantly violated rules over a period of time to manage that.

3) Even when Art does eject a chronic offender, if they have no scruples
or respect for self and others they can simply re-register using an ongoing
string of email addresses and continue to "contaminate the water." (an
example of this took place in just the last hour or so).

So, the most effective method BY FAR of dealing with people who
attack and name call and use obscenities is to 1) ignore them under
any and all circumstances and/or 2) write them OFF LIST if you feel
you MUST RESPOND. Any response on list is like trying to put out a
fire with buckets of gasoline! (3- Praying for them won't hurt, either).
Of course, you can also assume the attitude expressed by ET, and
which, on SOME occasions I have done - enjoy the "dog fight" for what
it is - humans acting out their weaknesses sometimes it can be
viewed as truly comical. However, I find that difficult when things
get "nasty," - especially when such dynamics can lead to contributors
such as Bernd leaving the list, but even then there is a magical solution!

Best wishes, Michael

RE: [meteorite-list] SALE: REALLY COOL METEORITE

2004-04-01 Thread mark ford

Hi,

Having just bought and received one of Deans thin sections and it's
corresponding (quite fresh) 205g NWA meteorite, I thought I would report
my observations :

I have to say the thin section is a good size and of a good standard,
it is flat and of proper thickness (Looks great under mag). If I had to
make one comment there is a very slight over hang of materiel over one
edge, but why should that matter?

I am impressed with it and would buy again!

(I am not taking sides in this debate, but thought I would report on my
experience with the items).

Cheers,
Mark Ford

[meteorite-list] AW: New Mars Meteorites (DAG 1037, NWA 2046, SAU 130)

2004-04-01 Thread Norbert Classen
Hi Ron, Eric, and List,

Another correction has to be made regarding SaU 130. According
to my information the TKW of this find is 278 grams. SaU 130 is
comprised of four individual stones, with the 116 grams stone
being the largest of the group. Just thought I should pass this
along.

Ah yes, and before I forget to mention it - I have a specimen
of DaG 1037 in my collection, and to me it's pretty obvious that
DaG 1037 is another pairing of the DaG olivine-phyric shergottite
grouplet. It should be regarded paired with DaG 476, 489, etc.,
and it's surely no "new" Martian meteorite.

All the best,
Norbert

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list sign out

2004-04-01 Thread Jim Strope
I think you have hit upon the prime reason for the deterioration of this
list with your first point. It is also the major reason I never recommend
this list to new collectors. As it has been said before by others, all of
our hobbies, what ever they may be are supposed to be a source of enjoyment
and escape from the trials of everyday life. This list should be a source
of education and enjoyment not a stressful experience.

Your second point is the perfect solution, a moderated list in which emails
are not released until they are approved as not containing infractions of
the rules. Now some would call this censorship but I would point to the
fact that there is currently a list of guidelines that everyone is supposed
to adhere to. http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing_list.shtml The
problem is that they are currently ignored and not enforced. A good
compromise to hands-on moderation of the list would be the strict
inforcement of the current rules.

Just my two cents.

Hello, Rosie and the list,

that´s really great, who will be the next? The list have now lost

The first pieces were terrible, I have one 100 grams piece in the
riker-box, and it´s pure shale and dust now, it´s one of the first
pieces came tothe market after the found.
The more new ones purached from Finmet are quite stable, don´t
know exact, what´s the method Ivan uses to satbilise them, but
they seem to stay in a good condition. I have had a polished end-
cut on my desk several months without any marks of rust.
The price of Dronino is quite low, so to me it seems worth to
buy a piece, it´s a quite interresting one. But you have to check,
you are buying a stabilised piece, not one of the first catastrophes...;-

Most of the people on the list probably never have

the day Robert

happen the whole
time. The man who sold Robert the Esquel was actually
on his

How many of you

Hi
I bought a egg size whole Dronino on Ebay a few months back. Meteorite was in nice condition. I have done nothing special to it, sits on the shelve with the others. So far no problems at all. I live less tha a  half mile from the ocean in Maine, the salt air causes me problems with others but so far not this one.

Hi Edwin and all,

Good to see you on the list here. I am sure we can learn a few things (if not a lot)
from your past experiences. Like a number of people on the list, I have had the honor
of dealing with you in the past and even with in the last few months.

While on the subject, another list member (if he is still on the list) Philip M.
Bagnall is an old timer and certainly has much to offer. In the past he had a group
called the, Society of Meteoriteophiles which was based in the United Kingdom. Before
Meteorite Magazine, there was another magazine called Impact. I joined this society
late in 1991 and was able to subscribe to the magazine, which at that time carry much
needed information about meteorites and meteorite collecting. Philip Bagnall (for
those not familiar) wrote the book " The Meteorite and Tektite Collector's Handbook" a
practical guide to collecting at that time (before the internet was hot).

There are many other great people of the past who have done so much for collecting and
as mentioned Blaine Reed is one of them who many of us are indebted to. Not to still
the wind out of Edwin's sail here as I for one am very glad to see him aboard.

It might be fun to revisit the past and tell a little about what was going on and who
and so forth. Guess it is why I like to write about Nininger here on the list. Well
nuff said and look forward to your posts Edwin!!

Hi Tom and all,

While Nininger was certainly responsible for a number of Texas meteorites, Talking to
the past curator of the Moning collection, quite an impressive number of Texas
meteorites were found by Oscar Moning. He was the Nininger of Texas Meteorites so to
speak.

A post on the list about Travis County (and a reference to the archives of Meteorite
Magazine!) listed one of these most impressive finds. One that if it had not been for
Mr. Moning would probably still be lost and oxidizing.

perhaps someone that has access to the disk from the Catalog of Meteorites might be
able to zip you off a list of specimens from Texas without a great amount of trouble.

[meteorite-list] Fireball Over Australia

2004-04-01 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,9158323%255E3102,00.html

Great ball of fire! No April Fool's joke
Louise Crossen and Peter Morley
The Courier-Mail (Australia)
April 2, 2004

AUTHORITIES are still in the dark about a mysterious fireball
that appeared over Winton on Wednesday night - although some
sceptics are claiming the spectacular light show was an early
April Fool's Day joke.

Winton Mayor Bruce Collins said a few tall tales were already
doing the rounds.

"Everyone has got a story about where they were when it happened,
and there have been people who thought the whole thing was just
an April Fool's Day joke," Cr Collins said.

"But I saw the tail end of it myself, and it was real all right."

Resident Neal Elliot said he had been walking when "a ball of
fire fell out of the sky" about 7pm.

"A young girl came running out from one of the houses, her face
all white and her eyes popping out of her head. Everyone came
spilling on to the street, just looking up at the sky.

"I knew it was something from outer space - it was just unreal."

Winton police sergeant Wayne Lynn said an explosion rocked the
town minutes after the light display.

"We thought the world was coming to an end," Sgt Lynn said.

Winton sheep grazier P.J. Elliott said his mouth was so wide
that "if a plain turkey flew into it the bird would go straight
down without touching the sides".

"Whatever it was, it scared the living daylights out of me, "
Mr Elliott, 30, said.

"I was so shaken I thought about tying dogs to my bedroom door
that night.

"But they might not have been much help. When I saw the fireball
I was about 11/2km from home and I could hear those mutts
howling in a most peculiar way."

There was speculation the mysterious light display was caused by
a piece of space junk, but University of Queensland astrophysics
lecturer Dr Michael Drinkwater said it was more likely to have
been a fast-moving meteor.

"This is what we call a fireball - basically a small meteor
moving at thousands of kilometres an hour," he said.

"The bright head, red glow and vapor trail are typical of a
rocky meteor."

He said the explosion heard by locals was likely to be a sonic
boom - a series of shockwaves caused by the enormous speed of
the meteor.

"The noise doesn't indicate it hit anything - it probably burnt
up in the atmosphere," Dr Drinkwater said.

[meteorite-list] Double Whammy Link To Dinosaur Extinctions

2004-04-01 Thread Ron Baalke

Double whammy link to extinctions
By Paul Rincon
BBC News
April 1, 2004

The chances that asteroid impacts and huge bouts of volcanism coincide
randomly to cause mass extinctions may be greater than previously
imagined.

UK researchers conducted statistical tests to determine the probability
of such catastrophic events happening at the same time in Earth history.

They found massive releases of lava and space collisions should have
overlapped three times in the last 300 million years.

Details will be published in a future issue of the geological journal
Lithos.

The work has been done by Dr Rosalind White and Professor Andy Saunders
of the University of Leicester.

The probabilities they calculated assumed there was no causal link
between the two phenomena - that impacts from space did not set off the
volcanism.

Smoking guns

Flood basalts, as the term suggests, are formed by massive outpourings
of lava from beneath the Earth. Hundreds of thousands of cubic km of
material can be spewed on to the surface in short geological
timescales.

These eruptions have, like space impacts, been blamed for some of
Earth's mass extinctions due to the environmental changes they may
trigger.

The Leicester authors contend that because impacts and flood basalts
occur more frequently than mass extinctions, it is unlikely the two
phenomena bring about mass extinctions on their own.

However, mass extinctions may be triggered when the two events occur
together, they argue.

There is evidence of both phenomena happening at the same time 65
million years ago, when the dinosaurs disappeared from the fossil
record. The impact that created the 180km-wide impact crater at
Chicxulub in Mexico is generally thought to have played a major
part in this extinction.

But some scientists think the flood basalts known as the Deccan
Traps in India are an alternative "smoking gun". The gases released
in this volcanic event would have resulted in major climate changes.

Impact trigger

Firstly, the Leicester researchers determined the probability that
a flood basalt would coincide with a Chicxulub-sized crater.

They found the probability of this happening at least once over a
period of 300 million years was 57%.

Once the researchers reduced the size of the impact slightly, the
probabilities increased sharply.

For craters exceeding 100km, the probability of at least three
co-occurrences between flood basalts and impacts was 46%. For
craters exceeding 60km, the probability of three or more was 97%.

The researchers point out that impacts and flood basalt volcanism
have been implicated in three major mass extinctions in the past.

Some researchers, such as Professor David Price, of University
College London, argue that asteroid impacts can themselves bring
on catastrophic volcanism.

Professor Price says there is geochemical evidence to suggest an
impactor started the Siberian trap flood basalts, which are
associated with the end-Permian mass extinction 251 million years
ago.

"I wouldn't be very convinced by the robustness of any statistical
analysis when you're dealing with just half a dozen events in the
last billion years," Professor Price told BBC News Online.

'Kill mechanism'

He also points to evidence uncovered by Professor Mike Coffin, of
the University of Texas at Austin, which shows the Ontong Java
Plateau - a submarine flood basalt in the western Pacific Ocean
thought to be the world's largest - was initiated by the impact
of a 20km object from space.

The Leicester researchers say the idea of impacts causing massive
volcanism is interesting, but no causal link has been proven.

"In the case of the Ontong Java Plateau, we would expect such a
large impact to have left lots of signs in the geological record,
but none have been found," Dr White said.

Professor Tony Hallam, of the University of Birmingham, commented:
"The idea that [flood basalts and impacts] could be purely
coincidental is rather a negative one - a null hypothesis - but it
strikes me as quite reasonable."

Dr White and Professor Saunders propose in their paper that the
"kill mechanisms" associated with flood basalts or impacts by
themselves are not sufficiently powerful to cause the worldwide
collapse of ecosystems - a point disputed by many other scientists.

RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list sign out

2004-04-01 Thread Charles Viau
This is just my 2 cents, but the content of this list is so bothersome
lately that I feel that it is the precursor of its demise. Let's face
it; any entity that tries to govern itself without enforced regulations
just does not work any more in this electronic society. The net has
changed forever. I certainly do not have the credentials like some who
post to this list, nor have I been here for the time that they have,
however I do have a suggestion.

This is the premier meteorite board on the net. Perhaps, it should now
be treated with the respect it deserves. Thousands of professionals and
amateurs alike visit and post to it. There are people here from NASA,
all the great colleges and universities, scientists, most major
dealers... and of course the casual person just looking for information.
I agree that a moderator that donates their time and resources cannot
justify active moderations. Without Art, this list would not exist, so
how about a plan for the future:

Art moves the list to a web platform. There are some great, secure web
based message board apps available out there. The board charges dues to
people who post to the list. They are assigned individual passwords.
Lets say, an unqualified sum of $5.00 per year.

The list maintains free read-only access for everyone.

The dues pay for the web related expenses and the services of a
full-time moderator that Art can hire who filters the content to
meteorites only. Any personal attacks, offensive post or spam, you lose
your password, forfeit your dues and are never allowed to post again.
Period. Other content deemed inappropriate, moderator gives warnings
and if it continues, ditto.

I think that if this is done, the list will flourish and some of the
people that have left (and missed) will come back.

Again, just a suggestion, and I do not know how Art feels about that, so
perhaps he could respond with his opinion.

Regards,

CharlyV

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list sign out

Hi Pierre-Marie & All,
Well said, BUT there are 3 MAJOR problems with your proposed
solution:

1) Art is good enough to sponsor this list, but HARDLY ANY LIVING HUMAN
would have the time to screen every post! This list is set up to
function on
automatic.

2) While Art has outlined very clear and sane rules, he is very patient
in
allowing room for a "self correcting" forum to allow people to straiten
out when they get out of line. Only a hand full of people have ever been
even suspended and only a few have been banished. And believe me,
they ALL blatantly violated rules over a period of time to manage that.

3) Even when Art does eject a chronic offender, if they have no scruples
or respect for self and others they can simply re-register using an
ongoing
string of email addresses and continue to "contaminate the water." (an
example of this took place in just the last hour or so).

However, I find that difficult when things
get "nasty," - especially when such dynamics can lead to contributors
such as Bernd leaving the list, but even then there is a magical
solution!

Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Neuschwanstein main mass found

Hi all,

a mediate rusted specimen with a weight of 5,460.10 grams was found in March
2003
after snow melting period on Austrian territory in the alpine mountains.

Scientists are now discussing the name of the meteorite.
Like the difference between "plutinos" and planets here it is the same.
Difference between "Austrian" or "German" meteorite. This is reasonable as
the recently
found (present) main mass of 5460 grams was found on Austrian territory.

You will read more on this topic in the next few days.

Stay tuned !

Dear Charles and all,
I would like to respectfully disagree - strongly.
The list has worked just fine FOR YEARS - yes, we have had to put up

This reminds me of politicians who always want to make amendments
to the constitution. It doesn't matter whether I agree or disagree with the
position, amending the constitution is almost always a very bad idea at
best. Leave the damned thing alone - it is the basis of the greatest country

this list is not perfect. But let's don't go dorkin' with it!
Besides, it is Art's baby and no one but Art can do ANYTHING with

2004-04-01 Thread Michael L Blood
Dear Charles and all,
I would like to respectfully disagree - strongly.
The list has worked just fine FOR YEARS - yes, we have had to put up
with some real nonsense, BUT THERE IS A DELETE BUTTON.
This reminds me of politicians who always want to make amendments
to the constitution. It doesn't matter whether I agree or disagree with the
position, amending the constitution is almost always a very bad idea at
best. Leave the damned thing alone - it is the basis of the greatest country
known throughout history - and no, this country is NOT perfect - just as
this list is not perfect. But let's don't go dorkin' with it!
Besides, it is Art's baby and no one but Art can do ANYTHING with
it. To all our benefit, Art has ALWAYS demonstrated a non-reactionary
position toward the list. (THANK YOU, Art!)
Best wishes to all, Michael

I see that there have been 45 visits and no one bid the opening

Yes, M + Galaxie = strange but not strange!!!
Next: FunkyMonkey Meteorite!
About time for me to auction off another Meteorwrong display kit, and

[meteorite-list] Spirit Finds Multi-Layer Hints of Past Water at Mars' Gusev Site

NEWS RELEASE: 2004-093April 1, 2004

Spirit Finds Multi-Layer Hints of Past Water at Mars' Gusev Site

Clues from a wind-scalloped volcanic rock on Mars investigated by
NASA's Spirit rover suggest repeated possible exposures to water
inside Gusev Crater, scientists said Thursday.

Gusev is halfway around the planet from the Meridiani region where
Spirit's twin, Opportunity, recently found evidence that water used to
flow across the surface.

"This is not water that sloshed around on the surface like what
appears to have happened at Meridiani. We're talking about small
amounts of water, perhaps underground," said Dr. Hap McSween, a rover
science team member from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

"The evidence is in the form of multiple coatings on the rock, as well
as fractures that are filled with alteration material and perhaps
little patches of alteration material," McSween said during a press
conference at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

The rock, called "Mazatzal" after mountains in Arizona, lies partially
buried near the rim of the crater informally named "Bonneville" inside
the much larger Gusev Crater. Its light-toned appearance grabbed
scientists' attention. After Spirit's rock abrasion tool brushed two
patches on the surface with wire bristles, a gray, darker layer could
be seen under the tan topcoat. The rock abrasion tool ground into the
surface with diamond cutting teeth on March 26. Then, after an
examination of the newly exposed material, it ground deeper into the
rock two days later. A lighter-gray interior lies under the darker
layer, and a bright stripe cuts across both.

Dr. Jeff Johnson, a science team member from the U.S. Geological
Survey's Astrogeology Team, Flagstaff, Ariz., said the stripe "seems
to be a fracture that water has flowed through, potentially with
minerals precipitating from that fluid and lining the walls of the
crack."

He and other scientists stressed that the interpretations are
preliminary. "The team is, as always, trying to find time to digest
these observations while also preparing for the next day's
operations," Johnson said.

Spirit's alpha particle X-ray spectrometer checked what chemical
elements were close to the surface of untreated, brushed, once-drilled
and twice-drilled patches. "Miracles, miracles, miracles. We have a
lot of work to do," the instrument's lead scientist, Dr. Rudi Rieder
of the Max Planck Institute, Mainz, Germany, exclaimed about the
results. For example, the ratio of bromine to chlorine seen inside
the rock is unusually high and possibly a clue to alteration by water.

The final experiment on Mazatzal was to scrub the surface with the
rock abrasion tool in a pattern of five circles arranged in a ring,
with a sixth circle in the center. Besides creating a rock-art daisy,
this task by the engineers of New York-based Honeybee Robotics, as
well as JPL, produced a brushed patch big enough to fill the field of
view of Spirit's miniature thermal emission spectrometer, said Dr.
Steve Ruff of Arizona State University, Tempe. The tan outer surface
appears to have a strikingly different mineral composition than the
dark gray coating exposed by the brushing, but more time is needed to
complete the analysis, he said.

McSween proposed that the light outer coat, dark inner coat and bright
veins could have resulted from three different periods of the rock
being buried, altered by fluids and unburied.

While scientists await transmission of additional data Spirit has
collected about Mazatzal, the rover will be making its way toward the
"Columbia Hills" about 2.3 kilometers (1.3 miles) away. Spirit left
the rock and drove 36.5 meters (120 feet) early Thursday.

Opportunity set a one-day driving record on Mars on March 27 by
covering 48.9 meters (160 feet) toward a rock called "Bounce Rock"
because airbag bounce marks show that the spacecraft hit it on landing
day two months ago. "We're looking to break that record again very
soon with longer and longer drives," said JPL's Chris Lewicki, flight
director.

Before moving on across the plains of Meridiani, though, Opportunity
will complete an investigation it has begun of Bounce Rock. The rock
is unlike any seen on Mars before, said Dr. Jim Bell, lead scientist
for the rovers' panoramic cameras. "There are some shiny surfaces on
this rock," he said, describing them as "almost mirrorlike."

The two rovers' 18 cameras have now taken more than 20,000 images.

Hello Folks,
Fred Hall here, meteorite collector, dealer and cartoonist. I've taken a year off from drawing meteorite related cartoons because of the threat of a law suit towards the Meteorite Exchange (not for any cartoons, however.) I've been thinking of starting up again. I drew meteorite cartoons for the now defunct mag Voyage! for two years and then for Meteorite Exchange for one year.
One of my favorite sections of the Rocky Mountain News is the comics. Sometimes I don't enjoy certain comics, but I realize that I have my own sense of humor, it is not all encompassing.
Mark's cartoonist is a famous artist (in the cartoon world) and he knows that not every toon he draws is going to be a hit, some may even upset a small percentage of folks. SO WHAT! No artist can please everyone, nor should they ever try! Bill K., if you are still on this list, Get A Life! Get Real, OR Get Lost!

Come on,

Nobody can really understand why this guy finds the cartoon offensive?
Especially coming from someone who has never been to Park Forest !
Im a local too, a half hour drive. I look out my door and see million dollar

How are things in Wichita? Isn't there a serial killer running around there?
Hmmm... sounds like some serious crime going on there.
Ive hunted Park Forest many times since it fell. All I met were great
friendly people.
No problems at all.
Would it have been much to make a public apology?
Surely it would have taken alot less time than it took to write up the
cartoon.

[meteorite-list] All of this stuff

2004-04-01 Thread ChrisRouse

Hello all -
Some of you sellers know me, as I've bought from you over the past years. Others don't know me, of course.
I've never posted before. But now - really, folks - I'd just like to pick up some info about meteorites. I'm just a collector who wants to know more. I've so enjoyed seeing Bernd Pauli's messages over the past few weeks.
To be honest, I did enjoy all of the to-and-fro with Matteo a bit. It was a hoot reading his fractured English! But now things seem to have gotten out of hand. People who want to bicker should feel free to - privately. All of this posting to the entire list suggests generals trying to rally troops to their side. I'm not quite ready to unsubscribe, but I'm a half-step from it.
Please, people: I can't believe that I'm alone in this. Bush vs. Kerry is one thing, but Mark vs. Bill is another. How about some new NWA info instead?
    Best wishes to all (sincerely),
    Chris Rouse

[meteorite-list] Frozen Meteorite Finds...MUST READ !

2004-04-01 Thread j . divelbiss
Dear List,

I've always been fascinated with the concept that rocks in space are usually in a
frozen condition when in their natural state in space. For the most part that
changes when they fall to Earth and become meteorites. That is ...while they are
in space they are often frozen due to their average distance from the Sun, the
coldness of the vacuum of space, etc. until they fall to Earth.

We have other examples of finding and maintaining frozen meteorite samples from
the ice fields of Antarctica, and the famous fall of the carbonaceous CI(Tagish Lake)
that fell into snow on a frozen lake in Canada...and was picked right away by a
witness who fortunately had the idea of freezing them right away. Then there is
the concept of frozen "carbonaceous dirt" balls possibly making up our comets is
being evaluated right now by one of NASA's probes.

Recently I was surfing the net for more information about meteorites in a frozen
condition and I reviewed several good sites about Antarctica, Tagish Lake
and the like. At the same time I also came up with another interesting link that
may have some merit when looking for new sources of meteorites...as in frozen
ones. I'm somewhat skeptical but the facts seem to support the theory presented.
I've posted an interesting link on finding frozen meteorites that you all should read.

http://www.spacenews.netfirms.com/news_stories/04_88723.htm

Any feedback would be enjoyed by this connoisseur of pristine frozen meteorites.

Hi all,

I've thought about that process a lot. Frozen in space, well not frozen but colder
anyway and going through the ablation process so intensely that it never heats or
cools internally. The ice cube fresh out of the furnace that just lost mass as it was
explained to me. Fascinated me from the first time I heard it.

[meteorite-list] new martian meteorite DaG 1037

2004-04-01 Thread Ing. Christian ANGER
Hi all,

I recently got a sample of the new DaG 1037
As you all may know, yesterday's announcement of the MetBull 88
brought up this new mars.

Great thing ! It has features which you don't have in other Dag 476 etc.
meteorites

It is a spectacular Martian Meteorite with glassy - almost translucent
appearance!
This is the center piece - the missing link - of the DaG Shergottites! - It
seems to origin from the exact zone where the asteroid has hit the surface
of the Red Planet!
Erich sells it at www.mars.li !
He states that prices will increase although it is a big meteorite.
Who knows Erich knows he means (serious) what he says.

best regards from Austria,

Christian

PS:

Neuschwanstein main mass finding report was made on April 1st ;-)

[meteorite-list] Meteorites and Children's Smiles

2004-04-01 Thread Jason Phillips

Hello List,
I decided that this is the most appropriate time to
tell a wonderful story from my African expedition in December with Grep Hupe and
Dr. Tony Irving.

One afternoon we were visiting with a very
nice family looking at some of the meteorites that they had for
sale.  One of the meteorite specimens they had displayed some great
eye appeal, ok it was really more WOW appeal.  Well the three of us
were outside using the sun as a more natural light source to try and see if we
could determine what this specimen was.  We stood out among the local
people and all the children wanted to come around and see what we were
doing.  Some of the young boys recognized that were looking at ROCKS, and I
am sure they thought we were rather crazy.  Well this group of boys decided
to pick up rocks off of the ground and they were using the top off of a broken
glass soda bottle to examine their rocks a little more closely just as we were
using a magnifying loop to examine our ROCKS.

I guess what this story says is that sometimes
when you stand out from the crowd it is important to be careful what you are
doing because others may try and be like you.  Or it may just be a great
example of a future planetary geologist learning that not all rocks are from
earth.

Take Care,
Jason Phillips

I moderate two forums lists. One is open-ended as
Meteorite-list. (no restriction on posting, but forum ethics are meticulously
detailed). When there are apparent violations by participants,  the
moderator cautions the offending party off -line. If the caution is
ignored he/she is shifted to the 2nd forum which is restricted (reviewed and
posted at the discretion of  the moderator). This latter option
occurs most often when complaints such as has occurred on this list become
acute. For certain, however, when rules of dialogue are posted and reiterated
periodically, the forum(s) enjoys the enlightening exchanges and
  seldom suffer loss of membership.

Rosie, and remaining List,
Rosie, you only said what alot of us felt, that took courage and I , and
I'm sure many, many, others respect you for it. If Bill felt he had to
fight a battle for reasons only he could explain.. ( possibly what he
felt was racism ?) , he's smart enough to know he's lost the war, and I
hope he realizes that it's not smart to plant bombs in your own
backyard. If the List falls apart , it won't be your fault anymore than
it was Marks. It won't even be entirely Bills fault, there have been
worse squabbles than this on-list before. We have to straighten out this
mess by trying really hard not to let personal attacks and dealer wars
carry on to the list. It's our responsibility, part of the conditions of
being members That's all. We've just about all done it from time to
time, myself included. But at the cost of loosing any more of the List,
I think it's time to chill-out and learn from all of this. "Can't we all
just get along?" One of the best quotes of the decade!! Best Regards,

Agreed  - and there would have been zero bickering tonight, had private messages remained private.  But there is none among us who cannot be embarrassed by having private messages broadcast to the list by a coward with an agenda.  It's the reason private-message-posting is forbidden by list-rule #3.   Blame for bickering is sometimes 50-50...but then again sometimes it's 100-0, and it does no good to try to FORCE it to even out, to take blame from where it should be and put it where it shouldn't.

[meteorite-list] met-list

2004-04-01 Thread joseph_town
You know. I've been here less than a year {the list} but I really looked at things and
listened to everyone with the awe of a child, at first. I listened with respect and
awe as a student. I'm 54 years old but the Park Forest thing was really special to me.
It was new. I dragged furniture and appliances around this area for a lot of years and
know a lot of people here personally. I have no vested interest. I'm no cop or
politician. I only wanted everyone to know that this is a pretty harmless place. If
you want to battle about crime stats look em up to your hearts content. I pointed out
that in 30 years here I had no problems. It's just the truth. I'm sick of repeating
it, but I will continue as I am challenged. I'm as stubborn as anyone. If you have
preconceived notions, fine. Don't talk to me in a negative way because I know better.
You can however heckle all you want OFF THE LIST!! No way I'll take the heat for the
real issues here that have driven people away and there is no way I'll ever leave by
my own choice. I came here to learn and have learned a lot. I look forward to the
positive as most of us do.
