Re: [meteorite-list] MLBLOOD?
Greetings listees, Surely someone on this list knows of a list member, meteorite collector, or even someone in which a Michael Blood metlist post had been forwarded to, from ROMANIA? This where the MBLOOD virus/worms are originating from. They are from a person in Romania who uses a IP of cb.ess.ro. That stands for Eastern Space Systems in or near Bucharest. If you know of such a person, could you please notify this individual that their PC is infected? It's the only way it's going to stop. [meteorite-list] Need ideas for numbering collection
Hi List, I've been wanting to create a numbering system for my collection. Right now I'm just using the specimen name with the gram weight. Believe it or not, I actually have a few specimens with the same weight! So I need to come up with something more versatile. The few ideas I've come up with or have seen aren't very attractive. I guess this sort of thing will always involve compromise though. I would like to hear what you do for your collections. Contact me off list if you don't want to post publicly. Happy collecting! [meteorite-list] NWA/Sahara maps
Hi List, Are there any regional maps depicting NWA Sahara (and others?) on the same map? I've found some material online, but they're small scale maps that don't show the big picture. I know there are uniquely named falls/finds through out Northern Africa. I'm mainly interested in a visual showing the boundaries that would determine whether an unclassified specimen would be called NWA vs. Sahara (or any other catch all names that may be in the same part of the world). Thanks for any help! Mark Bowling Vail, AZ __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Very old Pultusk woodcut
Hi everybody While in Copenhagen I bougt 2 very old books,(1870 and 1872) both of them containing chapters on meteorites. One of them has a woodcut showing the Pultusk strewnfield. And there is also a colorplate, showing a fireball in Knyahinya Hungary 9. june 1866 If anyone want to see the pictures, just drop me a line, and I will mail them to you. The books will be for sale later, if anyone interested. They are in danish language. [meteorite-list] Need ideas for numbering collection
I actually have a few specimens with the same weight! So I need to come up with something more versatile. Hello Mark and List, If I get that right you are talking about several specimens of *1* meteorite - say three Allendes or 4 Odessas that all have the same weight. They may weigh the same but will probably look different (shape, dimensions, presence or absence of fusion crust, etc.). Photographing them with their respective identification labels is one (first) step. Numbering them is also very helpful: Allende-01, Allende-02, Allende-03, etc. I also add short descriptions (i.e., occurrence of chondrules, sizes of chondrules and where they are located or other striking features that help telling them apart like large, oval, 4 mm chondrule in the lower left part of the slice, five chondrules of equal size forming an arc, etc.). These descriptions and photos are archived on two different computers (notebook + main computer) - both in my Microsoft ACCESS databases, Microssoft WORD documents, and Adobe Photoshop. Maybe some of these ideas are helpful. Best wishes, Bernd __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Need ideas for numbering collection
I am a begining collector, so I would like to know what others are doing. I am giving each meteorite an accession number, starting with M001. Tektites are Txx I am recording what I have in a spreadsheet with the following column headings: Accession Number Meteorite Name Class (Iron, Stone, CC, etc.) Type (Coarse Octahedrite, Ordinary Chondrite-Olivine Bronzite, etc.) Group (IAB, CV, etc.) Petrologic Type (Og, 3, etc.) Shock Weathering Slice or Fragment or Whole Size Mount (Micromount, Bag, Ryker box, etc.) Location of Fall Date of Fall (if known) Date of Discovery Label Photos (do I have photos of this?) Articles (do I have copies of articles on this item?) Chrondrites (0-10 in tems of quality or interest) Interesting (0-10 - how interesting is this item) Obtained When Obtained From Price Notes Not all columns make sense for all times of items, but it is adaptable. I have changed/added a bit since I restarted a year or so ago (I built a small collection about 20years ago). Suggestions welcomed! Re: [meteorite-list] Need ideas for numbering collection
Hi Mark and all, Besides using Bernd's excellent ideas (especially putting the list in several places for safety), using a color code could also help to keep down with too many letters and identifying marks for your specimens. Helps after your collection gets into the thousands ;-) Small colored dots or squares can help with the identity of certain types of classes you have along with a number. Photography seems to be an important means of identification to me. Listing items in a photo catalog. Items could even be listed using the weight in the naming of the specimen in the picture, listed in the photo catalog. One thing that members can do is have a system to identify their specimens (weights are a very good identifiable feature) so in the tragic event that something happens to the person collecting the specimens, others and family members can make some sense out of what they have in the collection. Otherwise it could be months or years to figure it all out, if at all. Collections represent a substantial investment to have so it only makes sense that they be well identified for future care takers who might want them in their collections. Also important for family members who may decide to dispose of the collection later. All my best! --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites minador wrote: Hi List, I've been wanting to create a numbering system for my collection. Re: [meteorite-list] NWA/Sahara maps
There are no boundaries to either the NWA area or the Sahara area. Sahara refers to meteorites for which the finders are intentionally withholding the geographic coordinates. These cannot be placed on a map unless somebody can convince the finders, mainly the Labennes, to release the data. NWA refers mostly to meteorites originating in the marketplaces of Morocco. Most of these have either no coordinates or uncertain coordinates. A few may have good coordinates, but it is left as an exercise for the reader to figure out which they are; I can't say. Again, a map is pretty much useless. So, what you seek does not exist because it isn't possible. jeff At 04:25 PM 7/10/2004, minador wrote: Hi List, Are there any regional maps depicting NWA Sahara (and others?) on the same map?
