[meteorite-list] OT - Old Soviet Joke About Free Speech (was "GWB and Meteorites")
The discussion about Mike Farmer and his comments about President Bush reminded a Russian friend of mine, who grew up in the Soviet Union and then spent the time after 1991 living in the Ukraine, which wasn't governed much differently than the Soviet Union, of a joke shared among close friends during Soviet times. An American businessman was chatting to a Soviet official over an exchange of vodka after negotiating a trade deal. After several shots, they got a little chummy and the American businessman politely mused that, the Soviet Union desperately needed freedom of speech. In fact", the businessman stated, "In the United States, if I don't like what the President of the United States is doing, I can stand on the steps of the White House and call him a "SOB" and nothing will happen to me. Don't insult us", replied the official, passing the American another shot glass of vodka, "We also have freedom of speech in the Soviet Union. I can stand on the steps of the Kremlin and also call the President of the United States an "SOB" and nobody will do anything to me." Best Regards, Paul Baton Rouge, LA __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Chicago STeve, Yup. I found three pieces of one at Primm with the official name of Roach: http://www.bol.ucla.edu/~gessler/aerolites.htm (Sorry for the bad photo). Alan said it looked like it had fallen a few days before we picked it up. I would say that I recovered 1/2 to 2/3 of it. Spent days looking for the other piece(s) to no avail. Re: [meteorite-list] VCI + membranebox
Dear Greg, List; Instead of twisted paper, the local "buy it all here" type of store has cotton balls for next to nothing. If one or two cotton balls in a box isn't enough, they sell them in the large bag full. For a very inexpensive display box, the same notable store types sell plastic sectioned boxes with see through lids for a few bucks. Get one and load it with cotton balls and put the meteorites in the little nests of cotton balls. My favorite is in the 2 inch by two inch square section size, boxes have around 24 or more sectioned areas, there's display for two dozen smaller meteorites... Not as classy, but very affordable for the beginning collector...or the new seller of meteorites who needs a less expensive display case as one tests the stormy waters of meteorite sales. Specimen can be placed in a reiker mount box when it is sold at point of sale, or let the buyer get a reiker mount box from you too! Lots of crabby folks sitting round for the last three day weekend of the summer, I'd say. Re: [meteorite-list] Re: More Unsubstantiated Allegations
John, Adam, and Greg, this thread went to far on all of our sides, it is time to step back and enjoy a nice Sunday (with exception of Greg, who is still very much in harms way). None of this helps any of us, and as usual, I get a little too excited about it all, when in the big scheme of the world, this little list means nothing. I will take a break, relax, and am going to Panama to enjoy a nice vacation with my wife, away from politics and meteorites soon. I have a ticket to Denver, but am not sure I will attend, as I am literally exaughsted from the non-stop travel lately. So all of you who are politically and meteoritically charged like I am, take a break, and enjoy life. Re: [meteorite-list] Ramblings
Dear list and all attached, First, thank you Mike for your concern. Yes, the eye of the hurricane is just about over us here in Lakeland as I type. So far I still have power but it has been flicking on and off for hours now. I do see a neighbors roof to their carport blown off behind me but that is all I can see from inside the house. To make this "meteorite" related, my meteorites are still dry. Now, on to replying to Mike's post: Mike writes- > > By the way > > How is the "we aren't dealers" spiel still working out? > > and the adventure stories about a couple of guys who have been on 3 > > meteorites hunts? Still, you are doing a good job of > > hyping yourselves, I myself could'nt handle so much self congratulating. > > Mike, I was in Morocco for two weeks the same time you were in Australia. You are not the only one who likes to travel and travel often. We just don't put ourselves on the pedistal about every trip or plant our faces in front of a camera on Bourbon Street while there. No need to show passports as just about everyone we know is very aware of how much we travel, no self-congratulating needed, just plain hard, honest work (and the adventure is fun too!) Mike, why don't you take all of your nervous energy and write about your adventures. I am sure people would like to read them in Meteorite! instead of your typical unprofessional manner here. Take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself why you are really pissed off at the world. Honest competition is a good thing, embrace it or be run over by it. You should worry less about others and more about yourself, you may do better. AGAIN ADAM, what did I do in Texas? answer or dont make such stupid statements. What is in the press? I am really lost on this one, since I saw the meteorite in the police station, and was home that night? Care to elaborate? Adam, you have a real habit of making charges, then failing to answer what you are talking about. Anyone know anything about Monahans I don't? Adam wasn't in meteorites at that time, so I am clueless on this one. Museums? name one that wont trade with me, Ill bet you cant. What scientist busted me stealing? Name please? Adam, you brought these points up, now tell us about them if you have anything other than your accusations. [meteorite-list] RE: Mike Farmer
You should stick to what YOU know Mike, and that isn't politics, and it certainly isn't the political leanings of this list or this nation. Sit back, re-read the hate filled filth you spewed. The only thing you did was impact your income, and your reputation in the minds of people who used to support you. Stupidity can do that to you sometimes Mike. You want an honest debate about politics, thats fine, but the way you did it, the place you did it, and how you did it was wrong, and you'll pay a price for it business wise. You have been non-stop here? I seem to recall your eradic behavoir has gotten you banned from the list at least once, which I sure will happen again. This is a metorite list, not Mike Farmers Meteorite List. There were collectors long before you Mike, and there will be long after you. Re: [meteorite-list] GWB and Meteorites
Thank you Francis, there are thousands of arguments against Bush, and thousands for him. It is up to every American to vote this year, it is critical on either side, because even though Martin posted the majority of Americans support Bush, the last 6 months poll numbers blow that out of the water. This will be the closest presidential race in history. So every vote counts, whichever side you are on, and anyone who does not vote, should keep their mouths shut. As a man who travels every month to other parts of the world, (something the Bush administration has made extremely difficult for Americans) I see the reality, the hatred that the rest of the world has for us. You would think by watching Fox news, that the world supports us, you would be wrong. I feel like we will soon be living in a prison, trying to protect ourselves from the "freedom haters". What a crock of shit. Watch this hilarious (but oh so true) flash video. It cracks me up. http://www.motherjones.com/commentary/fiore/2004/07/07_201.swf I also think that the rest of the world is watching this election more than ever. I was in Australia only a 2 weeks ago and all anyone wanted to know was how the election was going. Dear List: One of the ironic things about Mike Farmer's exchange is this: here we are in the 21st century and the only way to get new moon rocks is for people like Mike Farmer to collect them in the desert. Should we not have research missions to the moon by now? While G.W.B. has made some talk about this, what is being funded? The Chronicle of Higher Education has deemed GW Bush's administration one of the most anti-science administrations around. Much of his core constituency denies Darwinian evolution and modern cosmology, for example. While the latest batch of planetary probes (Cassini, the Mars Rovers, Galileo) have produced a treasure-trove of information, those initiatives began in prior administrations. I post to Farmer's defense, and on-topic: I think we can do better in an administration when it comes to promoting scientific progress in the planetary sciences, and many other sciences. I will probably vote for Kerry. Just my two cents. And it's topic-relevant, so no apologizies for this single, humble American citizen's opinion.
