[meteorite-list] Article describing meteorite fall in Jamaica in the year 1700

2005-09-26 Thread chris aubeck
Dear list,

After my recent request for information regarding a possible meteorite
fall in 1862, I found one report which apparently has not been
collected elsewhere.

Source: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society XXX, No. 357,
July-September 1718, pp. 837-838.

Article: A letter of the curious naturalist Mr. Henry Barham, R. S.
S., to the publisher, giving a relation of a fiery meteor seen by him,
in Jamaica, to strike the Earth...

Barham describes his observation of a falling fireball in the year
1700, about three miles north-west from St. Fago de la Vega. He
approaches a group of people south of the savanna who are admiring the
recently broken ground where they have seen a fireball come down.
Several deep holes, smell of sulphur, etc.

I just thought someone might be interested.

Best,

Chris

[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - September 23, 2005

2005-09-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Looking over Tennessee Valley - sol 606-613,
Sept 23, 2005:

Spirit completed a campaign of using the tools on its robotic arm to
examine the feature Cliffhanger. Spirit scuffed the soil using its
wheels in the area around Cliffhanger, and then observed both the
scuffed and undisturbed soil. In addition, Spirit imaged the moons
Phobos and Deimos at night. Spirit also acquired part one of a stereo
panorama.

Sol-by-sol summaries:

Sol 606 (Sept. 16, 2005): Spirit performed untargeted remote sensing and
took images overnight of Phobos and Deimos.

Sol 607: Spirit performed remote sensing and used the microscopic
imager, alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, and Moessbauer spectrometer on
the scuff feature of Cliffhanger.

Sol 608: Spirit began a long Moessbauer spectrometer campaign on the
exterior of Cliffhanger.

Sol 609: Spirit continued the Moessbauer spectrometer campaign.

Sol 610: Spirit once again continued the Moessbauer spectrometer
campaign. The rover also proceeded with a panorama of Tennessee Valley.

Sol 611: Spirit used the Moessbauer spectrometer in the interior of
Cliffhanger. Spirit then used the microscopic imager and alpha particle
X-ray spectrometer on the exterior of Cliffhanger. Spirit also took
overnight images of the moons.

Sols 612 and 613: Spirit is on a two-sol plan, consisting of microscopic
imager work and a 2.5-hour drive toward Hillary to obtain a better
look over Tennessee Valley. This new drive position will set up Spirit
for the second position to create the stereo panorama. Plans for sol 613
call for Spirit to perform untargeted remote sensing.

As of the end of sol 613, (Sept. 23, 2005), Spirit has driven 4,949
meters (3.08 miles).

The villages in the radius of about 60 km witnessed the heavenly body

[meteorite-list] ESA Selects Targets for Asteroid-Deflecting Mission Don Quijote

2005-09-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.esa.int/esaCP/Pr_41_2005_p_EN.html

N° 41-2005:

ESA selects targets for asteroid-deflecting mission Don Quijote
European Space Agency
26 September 2005

Based on the recommendations of asteroid experts, ESA has selected two
target asteroids for its Near-Earth Object deflecting mission, Don Quijote.

Don Quijote is an asteroid-deflecting mission currently under study by
ESA's Advanced Concepts Team (ACT). Earlier this year the NEO Mission
Advisory Panel (NEOMAP), consisting of well-known experts in the field,
delivered to ESA a target selection report for Europe's future asteroid
mitigation missions, identifying the relevant criteria for selecting a
target and picking up two objects that meet most of those criteria. The
asteroids' temporary designations are 2002 AT4 and 1989 ML.

With this input and the support of ESA's Concurrent Design Facility
(CDF) experts, the Advanced Concepts Team has now completed an extensive
assessment of suitable mission architectures, launch strategies,
propulsion system options and experiments.

The current scenario envisages two spacecraft in separate interplanetary
trajectories. One spacecraft (Hidalgo) will impact an asteroid, the
other (Sancho) will arrive earlier at the target asteroid, rendezvous
and orbit the asteroid for several months, observing it before and after
the impact to detect any changes in its orbit.

Industrial studies are now about to start; it will be down to European
experts to propose alternative solutions for the design of the low-cost
NEO precursor mission. This will be the first step towards the
development of a means to tackle asteroid impacts - one of the few
natural disasters that our technology can prevent.

A near miss?

While the eyes of the world were on the Asian tsunami last Christmas,
one group of scientists were watching uneasily for another potential
natural disaster - the threat of an asteroid impact.

On 19 December 2004 MN4, an asteroid of about 400 m, lost since its
discovery six months earlier, was observed again and its orbit was
computed. It immediately became clear that the chances that it could hit
the Earth during a close encounter in 2029 were unusually high. As the
days passed the probability did not decrease and the asteroid became
notorious for surpassing all previous records in the Torino and Palermo
impact risk scales - scales that measure the risk of an asteroid impact
just as the Richter scale quantifies the size of an earthquake.

Only after earlier observations of the object were found and a more
accurate trajectory was computed did it become clear that it would not
impact the Earth - at least not in 2029. Impacts on later dates, though
unlikely, have not been totally ruled out. It is extremely difficult to
tell what will happen unless we come up with a better way to track this
or other NEOs and if necessary take steps to tackle them.

Most world experts agree that this capability is now within our reach. A
mission like ESA's Don Quijote could provide a means to assess a
threatening NEO and take concrete steps to deflect it away from the Earth.

But every good performance needs rehearsing and in order to be ready for
such a threat, we should try our hardware on a harmless asteroid first.
Don Quijote would be the first mission to make such an attempt. The big
question was: which asteroid and what should it be like?

Looking for the perfect target

The NEO population contains a confusing variety of objects, and deciding
which physical parameters are most relevant for mitigation
considerations is no trivial task. But the NEOMAP experts took on the
challenge and in February 2005 provided ESA with their recommendations
on the asteroid selection criteria for ESA's deflection rehearsal.

People might wonder whether performing a deflection test, such as that
planned for Don Quijote, represents any risk to our planet. What if
things go wrong? Could we create a problem, rather than learn how to
avoid one?

Experts world-wide say the answer is no. Even a very dramatic impact of
a heavy spacecraft on a small asteroid would only result in a minuscule
modification of the object's orbit. In fact the change would be so small
that the Don Quijote mission requires two spacecraft - one to monitor
the impact of the other. The second spacecraft measures the subtle
variation of the object's orbital parameters that would not be
noticeable from Earth.

Target objects can also be selected so that all possible concerns are
avoided altogether, by looking into the way the distance between the
asteroid's and the Earth's orbits changes with time. If the target
asteroid is not an Earth crosser, as is the case with NEOs in the
Amor class (which have orbits with perihelion distance well in excess
of 1 AU), testing a deflection manoeuvre represents no risk to the
Earth. Other considerations related to the orbit of the target asteroid
are also important, especially the change of orbital velocity that is
required by the spacecraft to

OT Re: [meteorite-list] : Munich show - hotels

2005-09-26 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Marcy, list

this year the day before the Mineralientage the Systems is ending, a
larger IT-fair and parallely to the mineral show there will be a cosmetics
fair, so better book as early as possible.

There are two possibilities for accomodation:
The village Feldkirchen ,closely situated to the fair ground
(accessible by bus), where also the Friday evening beer place is,
or in the city center around the Central Station, Karlsplatz, Marienplatz,
where many cheap hotels and pensions are to be found for those, who will be
fed up with the old ugly stones to do some sight seeing and shopping, the
tube is going from there directly to the fair (and on Friday evening a
suburban train back from Feldkirchen).

In general everything around 50Euro or below for a room (note that some
charge per person, some by room) with breakfast is cheap for Munich.

Let's see.
Marcinhho, in the vicinity of your beloved IBIS, there is a Holiday Inn,
last year they had some specials at the fair's season below 50Euro. Hmm, but
this year not (twin room 59,50 per person, triple 40 per nose).

Hyenas they are in that hicksville, living only from the fairs - all other
hotels I checked in Feldkirchen 80-120Euro per room.

So back to town:

Last year I heard some were staying at the hotel Senefelder:
http://www.hotel-senefelder.de/index.html

Others at he Creatif Hotel Elephant (I guess each elephant would be more
creative in finding a better name):
http://www.munich-hotels.com/

A voilá, here I found last time the cheapest accomodations in the very city
center:
http://www.munich-info.de/hotels/lists/zentrum_de.html

Sorry it's only in German, search for your own (I'm very buzy), if you have
any problems, feel free to contact me.
But I'm at home only tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and then gone for 3 weeks -
I'm sure, that somebody else, who is German-speaking from the list will
assist you too (Svend? Ingo? Hulk starrockers? Hanno? Christian? Alex?)

Click on Hotels (= hotels) and Pensionen (pensions).

About the quality of the individual places, I don't know nothing, as I'm not
wealthy enough to lodge in fancy places of my hometown.
Last year I found a pension in last minute, which hadn't even one star, but
was o.k. - clean, room with bathtoilet, tv, breakfast buffet - 50Euro. (Ask
Razvan, I don't want to tell it here, as he wants to stay there again, but
hasn't reserved his room yet).

And again, for those, who are coming by plane, don't take a cab to the city
center, it's a huge rip-off and will cost more than 50Euro.
Take the suburbian (8 stripes from the blue ticket with stripes ~ 8Euro).

Much success!
Martin

2005-09-26 Thread Axel Emmermann
Dear Dirk and list,

Thank you for the praise and the attention but I would not say that I was
left behind with a meek thank you.
There was no financial reward but I was rewarded in a number of ways. Please
judge for yourselves:

I received a personal gift from Captain John Young, one of the (if not the)
most seasoned astronauts who went to the moon TWICE. It hangs proudly on my
living room wall.
In the frame next to it is a personal letter from the Director of the FBI
with an earnest and sincere thank you. Next to that hangs a frame with a
Belgian flag that has flown in space by space shuttle Atlantis in 1992.
An asteroid has been named after me (#15513 - Emmermann).
I had the honor of meeting one of the most prominent NASA researchers and
leading authority world-wide in the field of life on Mars twice. Dr. Everett
Gibson came to Antwerp and gave a speech before my club (Antwerp
Mineralogical Society). That is a moment that I, and all the members of our
club, cherish for the rest of our lives. Getting to know this friendly and
knowledgeable man is perhaps the greatest reward I could wish for.

I think I was well treated by NASA A piece of the moon would have been
a nice gesture ;-)) but still I think that things like that belong to the
public and should not be possessed by one man. Even the brave men that went
up there to collect those lunar samples do not have a specimen (although I
believe that legislation has been passed to allow them possession of a moon
rock. I'm not sure)

Your appreciation means very much to me.

About the great stress he suffered in this ordeal.
Well, the stress will be greater in 2009 when Roberts gets out of prison.
Not that I worry a lot. I don't scare easy but still... it makes you wonder
;-)))

Axel can provide to the list more information about the
article that he wrote, that did not make the newspapers.
It is quite a story of cloak and dagger.

Especially when you realize that I didn't have all the facts at the time
;-))) That story is the ony writtenfrom my perspective.
The FBI is not eager to share inside information about its investigations
and a LOT happened behind the screens. I got some of the puzzle pieces in
hindsight and from a friend who was involved in the affair. I 'd rather not
divulge things like names or organisations that were indirectly involved in
the case. People have lives and a right to privacy but otherwise you're free
to ask me anything you want to know.

Axel should be considered a US National Hero.

Now you make me blush ;-)))
I've been called that a few times but believe me, I'm not a hero. Just a guy
with enough principles to be civilized. Most of us are... It's just that
only a few get the chance to show it.

Now to get us back on topic: Back in 2001, one of the newspapers (I think it
was the London Times) estimated the value of ALH84001, which was among the
stolen samples, to more than 30.000.000 US$. Is that anywhere near
realistic?

Best regards

Axel

most seasoned astronauts who went to the moon TWICE. It hangs proudly on
my

living room wall.

That is a moment that I, and all the members of
our

club, cherish for the rest of our lives. Getting to know this friendly and
knowledgeable man is perhaps the greatest reward I could wish for.

I think I was well treated by NASA A piece of the moon would have been
a nice gesture ;-)) but still I think that things like that belong to
the
public and should not be possessed by one man. Even the brave men that
went

up there to collect those lunar samples do not have a specimen (although I
believe that legislation has been passed to allow them possession of a
moon

rock. I'm not sure)

Your appreciation means very much to me.

About the great stress he suffered in this ordeal.
Well, the stress will be greater in 2009 when Roberts gets out of prison.
Not that I worry a lot. I don't scare easy but still... it makes you
wonder

I 'd rather
not
divulge things like names or organisations that were indirectly involved
in
the case. People have lives and a right to privacy but otherwise you're
free

to ask me anything you want to know.

Axel should be considered a US National Hero.

Now you make me blush ;-)))
I've been called that a few times but believe me, I'm not a hero. Just a
guy

with enough principles to be civilized. Most of us are... It's just that
only a few get the chance to show it.

Now to get us back on topic: Back in 2001, one of the newspapers (I think
it

was the London Times) estimated the value of ALH84001, which was among the
stolen samples, to more than 30.000.000 US$. Is that anywhere near
realistic?

Best regards

Axel

Dear Axel and List,
As some of you may know, Axel Emmermann was the
person responsible for aiding in the recovery of the
stolen NASA Lunites and other meteorites stolen by
Thad Roberts and gang at the JSC.
He was never reward by NASA or the US Government
with a piece of the moon or much of anything other
than maybe a meek thank you.
I want to Thank and Reward Axel, on behalf of the
meteorite community and this List, for his many hours
of hard work and sweat, not to mention the great
stress he suffered in this ordeal. I will donate to
him some Lunar material.
If anyone else wants to follow up with their Lunar
Reward please come forward.
Thanks to all and especially Axel. Axel can provide
to the list more information about the article that he
wrote, that did not make the newspapers. It is quite
a story of cloak and dagger.
Axel should be considered a US National Hero.
Thank you. Best Always in LIFE, Dirk Ross...Tokyo

[meteorite-list] Need Denver Photos

2005-09-26 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

I'm writing a rush piece on the Denver show for the upcoming issue of
Meteorite. The deadline is this Thursday. I didn't get much of a
chance to take photos this year, and wish I had more images to
contribute to the article.

If anyone has photos they would like to submit for inclusion in
Meteorite please send me a link, or email samples. They'll need to be
hi-res digital files. Pics could be of: meteorite people, meteorites,
the big social events, even some of those old cowpokes in Teddy's Bar
would be pretty interesting : )

Proper photo credit will be given, of course.

If you think you might have something suitable, the sooner the better
please.

Thanks,

Geoff N.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD - Do you want a rare and importantMetachondrite ?

2005-09-26 Thread M come Meteorite Meteorites
I see many not look what is it a special
meteorite...probably you not have understand but NWA
1058 its the first oldest acapulcoite in the world,no
others its similar. We have found complete condrules -
not relic - in the matrix, never seen in others
acapulcoites. $150/gr. its a special price, in my site
the price its many many over. Ah, the other
acapucloites I have - NWA 1054 and 1052 - its W1 S1,
many fresh, and not only this, we have found a new
iron-nichel posphide into NWA 1054. Before to speak
read what it is written us in the text.
