[meteorite-list] price per gram on mali

2007-10-16 Thread steve arnold
Good morning list.Just a thought on this new mali
fall.I have seen thru different meteorite dealers on
both sides of the ocean, that the price per gram on
this new fall is really low.Uusally new falls start
out high and go thru the roof in the
beginning.Everyone is out to get it right away, than as
time goes on it goes lower and so forth. But this fall
is starting very low.A $1.25 per gram,$2,$2.50,$3 per
gram and so on.There must be alot of this fall. But the
question is: WHY IS IT STARTING SO LOW?Nothing has not
even been determined yet what it is.Again any thoughts
from the list?

[meteorite-list] WG: price per gram on mali

2007-10-16 Thread Martin Altmann
My apologize,

I shouldn't have written that, was inordinate, sorry.
I was disappointed, cause I was thinking, that now after the uncomely
struggles about Carancas were finally settled, Steve starts again to bomb
the list with his mails...
But he was quiet for a long time, so it was unfair to react so harshly.

Trouncing please in private mails, keep the list clean.

Martin

(Corinthians aren't only a football team...)

PS: Indeed like almost all Maghreb falls, that new one is extraordinary nice
and theoretically, seen the superb pieces, can't express it else: dirt
cheap.
A good buy for the beginner as well as for the classicist, also regarding
the long run.
Perhaps one should wait a little, until more will be available, to pick out
the very best specimens - but not too long, as the very best museum pieces
will sell first - remember that nowadays you won't find cheap large and
excellent Bensours, clean Zags and the very best of the best Amgalas anymore
(or at least not so cheap),
and in my eyes, it really doesn't matter, whether the most excellent
examples of such a fall cost 1.5$ or 3$/g,
as they will be among the best specimens of one's collection, your whole
life long, and it is simply impossible to get such fine stones of any other
falls in other countries for such little money.

No, we haven't any for sale. That's no AD.

[meteorite-list] re. Munich Show 2007 TRIP PLAN

2007-10-16 Thread PolandMET

Hello
To make Our life easier I have prepared "trip plan" for incoming Munich
Show.
There are 3 pages of hall A4, A5 and A6 with dealers name that have (or they
should have) meteorites or related items that is in our interest.
It is easy to print in Internet Explorer or in Your text editor like MS Word
(I tested it in OpenOffice 2.2 only)

There is plan of each hall with marked tables of each dealer who declared
that he have meteorites for sale.

I use search engine for Meteorite word from links that Martin send before.
I hope this will help.

Re: [meteorite-list] re. Munich Show 2007 TRIP PLAN

2007-10-16 Thread Martin Altmann
Thanks Marcin,

that's what I call a service!

Have to make some remarks.
Don't expect to much, meteorites came to attention as sellable goods in the
recent years, so that also such dealers, who have only 2 or 3 specimens or
only indochinites, listed meteorites in their assortment, when they
registered for the show. In worst case, they are some esoteric dealers, with
some Mekong River irons or some Campo-pendants at 10fold prices.

Another observation I made is, that many dealers from Morocco are bringing
only a very few selected nicer pieces with them and not the loads and boxes
like 3 or 4 years before. Not only because the supply shortened, but also
because the normal chondrites sell worse than their fossils and minerals.
Last year I saw the first Moroccan selling not NWA, but Sikhote :-)

On the other hand, several well known meteorite people are sharing their
tables with other dealers and are not listed in the dealer's directory.

Please hand in your booth number to Marcin, that he can add you to the
plans!

Best!
Martin

Re: [meteorite-list] Carancas, Peru Meteorite Could Be 10 Tons

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Farmer
Matteo, they have no plans to recover the meteorite.
It sits, today one month and one day under sewage
water. What do you think a fragile high-metal
meteorite will look like after that? Peru is a
disgrace. I offered to fund the excavation, I was
ridiculed, called a thief (by the same police who sold
me pieces then robbed me) and a scam artist and had to
flee the country. Carancas will not be dug up in time
to save it, the few puny pieces my friends and I and a
few others managed to save are all that is out there.
This meteorite has already been classified, and
submitted to the nomcom, and expect information
shortly when it is released for me to provide.
The Carancas fall will go down in history as a
disgrace for Peru, since they trashed their first
confirmed meteorite fall, leaving it in dirty water
now for months. Their scientists are more concerned
about their own notoriety, not the meteorite. The
government and police all want their hand in the
money-pie, that is why they stopped us from excavating
and trying to save the meteorite, they were being cut
out of the potential profit to be made from it by the
locals. It is surely one of the most corrupt places I
have been, sad to say, but I have never been squeezed
nearly this hard even in more than 40 trips to Africa.
Most of the time, money demands in Africa, Burkina
Faso, Lesotho, etc were $10 or $20.00 not the
thousands demanded of me in Peru.
Michael Farmer

corrupt the police are in Desaguadero.

price ("...starting so low"). Easy, I (for one) was able to obtain it for an

It is as simple as that.

Good luck getting that special piece for your collection.

Re: [meteorite-list] re. Munich Show 2007 TRIP PLAN

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Farmer
Martin, I can't wait, finally an escape from Tucson's
never-ending heat this year. Of course, I have seen
only a few days of it, but that is enough, I long for
Sweden's cool 24 hour days!
I will be in Munich, sharing some space with Moritz
and Achim Karl. Expect to see a few goodies, not much,
but I can bring things to order. The strenght of the
Euro vs the pathetic state of the US$$ will make my
goods very cheap I think! We will be bringing Lunar
and Martian meteorite coins, anyone can pick your
number pairs right now, and we can hand deliver in
Munich.
Anyone else wanting anything in particular, now is the
time to email me so I can prepare it.

2007-10-16 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello Mike and List,

The crust is very similar, but after cutting the different ones at the same
time Friday (photo I posted showing all three together), There are some
major and not so major differences. You would have to see a polished face in
person by hand and a microscope.

Best regards,

I would say that the fact that there is more than 100
kilos and every Moroccan has some helps. I know that
many kilos will be in Munich, my friends are bringing
hundreds of stones. I can't wait to see them, then
perhaps can see the difference between them and
Bassikounou that photos can not show.

[meteorite-list] Scientific Value of Carancas Crater Research

2007-10-16 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

After repeatedly scrutinizing the available crater pictures of the
Carancas crater and trying to find out what is so exciting about
it, I've come to the conclusion that it looks pretty much like the
terraced walls of several lunar craters - for example: Tycho or
Copernicus.

While it would be (or: would have been) extremely important to
retrieve the main mass at the bottom of the crater as quickly as
possible, it may also be a serious mistake not to document, study
and examine each and every detail of this "crater-forming" event!

Carancassically,

Bernd

Hello Everybody,
Something wrong is going on here, I guess who is
selling cheaper will regret how much he missed, this
is a great meteorite if we talk about a rock from
space, do not talk about crater smoke This new
(fall/find) is better than for ex carancas which is
selling for $100, does anybody here knows the TKW? why
to say 100 or 100t, do someone here weighed it? Or
just talk blablabla, (there's more than 100k )do not
try try to correct a mistake and say anything in order
to get a smile, or do not lie to get very cheaper from
a person who is really poor and afraid to lose his
1000 boxes.
A meteorite fell on July; june... 2007, who saw it,
and where is the huge fire ball passed over adrar(
Algeria) last year, you'd say , Bassikounou, I say no!
Bassi didn't take this way, Maybe this one ??!! what
about the weathering grade? is this fresher than some
gorgeous Bassi's peices ? no. the very small peices
are shown in the begenning together with the larger
ones, that not happened with Bassi and Amgala.
For you steve, Tell me the fact please, who told you
that this meteorite is similar to Bassi ? when did you
discover it ?
Greg, did you send a sample to be identified and share
the results with us? I saw you used the name of
CHERGACH, I was told Magtaa Lafrayss, which location
is correct? Mali or Algeria ?
something wrong is going on here, try to find out a
solution to this puzzle.
That's ma thinking,
Thanks

Re: [meteorite-list] price per gram on mali or Algeria a fall or a find!!!!!

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Farmer
Hence my advice to Steve to wait until these questions
are resolved.
Less than 10 kilos of Carancas made it out of the
crater unspoiled. The rest, up to 10 tons by
scientific calculations, it under sewer water for more
than one month, meaning DESTROYED for most purposes,
and Peru wants it as a tourist attraction, so I would
not hold my breath waiting to see the main mass of
Carancas on ebay anytime soon.

Re: [meteorite-list] price per gram on mali or Algeria a fall or afind!!!!!

2007-10-16 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello Aziz,

I have heard the two different names referring to the Mali material also. Is
the material found in both "regions" or was it seen entering the atmosphere
in both areas (the bolide)? Remember when Amgala was first named, and then
another name also refers to it (Oum Dreyga). Well, this happened because the
material was found in both of those areas and that is why you will find
Amgala/Oum Dreyga and both names are accepted for that one.

As far as sending a sample of the Mali meteorite in, the answer is no
because in an earlier email you had stated that you or someone you referred
to had sent the sample in. I only had a limited amount of material and all
was too nice to cut except the smaller piece I cut for comparison reason to
show List members. Someone asked to buy that piece for their collection so I
accommodated them. Which Moroccan sent in the type sample so we can expect
the results.

Thank you,
Greg

[meteorite-list] Digital microscopy on the cheap

2007-10-16 Thread Darren Garrison
Having not been able to find reviews of USB digital microscopes like this one:

http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.php/pName/usb-digital-microscope-with-13-m-pixel-resolution-video-clips/

I decided to bite the bullet and buy one and do my own testing. Mine arrived
today, and I have just started to play with it. The results are, as expected,
not comparable with what you would get spending several hundred to a few
thousand on a mid- to high end microscope and CCD camera, but they are pretty
good for something costing just 70 bucks.

Here are a couple of samples. Some or all of them have had some post-processing
work done in an image editing application. This chondrule is in an NWA 869, and
seems to have had an eventful history. First it became what I call a "Pac-Man"
chondrule, which might have been caused by collision with another chondrule
while still soft, or might have been caused by a blob of metal accumulatiing in
a drop and then seperating. Then it became bullseye chondrule. Then, at some
point after that, it seems to have been distorted or broken again, displacing
the two edges of the bleached rim.

This photo is the best I've managed before, the full resolution of my flatbed
scanner at 1600 dpi:

http://webpages.charter.net/garrison6328/usbmicro/chondrule_flatbed.jpg

This is the USB microscope at the mid-range of it's magnification:

http://webpages.charter.net/garrison6328/usbmicro/chondrule_partmagnification.jpg

And this is the full range of the magnification:

http://webpages.charter.net/garrison6328/usbmicro/chondrule_fullmagnification.jpg

This is just one of many chondrules that I plan on visiting in my slice of NWA
987:

http://webpages.charter.net/garrison6328/usbmicro/chondrule7_tweaked.jpg

More photos to come later.

Re: [meteorite-list] Scientific Value of Carancas Crater Research

2007-10-16 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Bernd, List,

You are right about the "terraced" look of the
Carancas crater! It seems to show best in the earliest
photos; I suspect some dirt from the rim has cascaded
down the walls in the intervening days.

True "terracing" only occurs in large impact craters.
After formation, the walls of the crater become unstable
(because they're so steep), and gravity causes them to
collapse. These landslides create a "blocky" appearance,
forming steps down to the crater floor. It's more common
in large older craters.

I believe the "terraced" appearance of the walls of
the Carancas crater is due to the rocky strata in the soil
being broken by the explosive excavation of the crater.
The "terraces" seem to "step back" at the 30 degree angle
of the crater walls.

The INGEMMET summary characterizes the geology
of the region as Cenozoic limestone and mentions relatively
weak stones: "sedimentary rocks (molasses or red beds:
siltstones, shales and slates)"

There appear to be some "blocky" stones in the pictures
of the fresh ejecta blanket. Mike Farmer talked about "blocks"
of hard dirt landing on rooves. It's possible the two are the
same (weak stone, hard dirt).

Mike thinks there's a one-ton stone in the crater and the
Canadian scientist Peter Brown is talking about "a ten-ton
monster," while I really doubt that there's anything much
to be found in the crater. I've been told by someone who
was there that the Carancas stones are extremely weak, that
by "pressing two together in one hand, you can crush [them]
to dust."

That does not sound like material that would survive any
substantial impact force. Whether the event was equivalent to
1 ton of TNT, 5 tons (seismic reading), or 15-20 tons (as
Peter Brown suggests) doesn't matter if they're that weak.

Yes, this IS a crater worthy of study. And with every
passing day, that seems less and less likely to happen.

Bernd

Yes, that may "unfortunately" be right. Much or most of it
may have been vaporized or been reduced to dust and what
has been collected may be comparable to what has been found
around Barringer Crater (Coone Butte) where any search for
the main mass down in the crater has so far remained futile!

.. sayeth Bernd who meanwhile owns two small but

Hello Aziz,

I have heard the two different names referring to the Mali material also. Is
the material found in both "regions" or was it seen entering the atmosphere
in both areas (the bolide)? Remember when Amgala was first named, and then
another name also refers to it (Oum Dreyga). Well, this happened because the

There really is no reason for Moroccan (or north African) meteorites to come
on the market without having been studied and classified.
Not anymore.
Dr. Hassna Chennaoui of the University of Casablanca is fully qualified and
accredited to do that. I am sure it would be very simple and easy for anyone
in Morocco to send a sample to her, and, since this service is not very
well-known yet, she will probably give you a response much faster than the

Hi Walter,

There would be no borrowing of "numbers" since it would have a name
assigned. The Moroccans who post to this List and have offered some of this
material to members have indicated they had sent in a sample. As Anne
stated, this is the most perfect time for the Moroccans to step up and
contribute to science. I can't think of a better thing to do instead of
leaving it to us foreigners to do it for them. They have the resources now,
I strongly suggest they use them for the good of science and themselves.

[meteorite-list] Lake Titicaca Meteoorite fall in Peru????

2007-10-16 Thread LITIG8NSHARK
Good evening, Mr. Gregory,

I did receive the two photos you sent me following my winning bid of your
eBay auction.

I would note that the second photo you sentthe one which shows you
climbing out of the crater with a few plastic bags for your "photo op"; and
which
you have posted to your latest auctionis disconcerting, to say the least.
That crater has been the recipient of human waste, among other things--if I
am properly informed. The fact that you climbed down into the crater-waste
without appropriate protection speaks volumes about your professionalism in
the science of meteoritics.not to mention your omnipotence.

The photo of the crater you forwarded; which coincidentally you have
apparently unilaterally named ("Lake Titicaca"), is not as advertised. The
optical
quality is quite poor, in fact--I find it difficult to believe that it is
1,200 dpi(one thousand, two hundred dpi) as I requested and, which is
significantly less than the quality you advertised as possible to send. In
all
honesty, my three year old, 5 meg., camera would have taken a cleaner picture.

Further, your eBay ad's suggestion that the photo you ultimately e-mailed me
was removed from your original eBay ad (yes, I saw the ad before you removed
the photoapparently concerned that some "ingenious" person might
actually copy the photo) in order to maximize it's quality with your Photoshop
software, is falling on deaf ears.

Yes, I won your auction for next to nothing..unfortunately, was worth
even less. So, to respond to your e-mail inquiry: Do I like the photos? I'm
not fluent in enough languages to tell you that "NO, I AM NOT HAPPY, I FEEL
TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, AND YES RANDY, I AM A LAWYER...FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH."

No worries my friend, I'm not going to sue youOn the contrary, I happen
to respect the Meteorite List members with whom you were fighting before you
did us all the favor, and resigned your subscription. So NO, anticipating
your next query...I will NOT represent you!

PS The idea that you would charge $50.00 shipping, for a one gram specimen
of any meteorite you might sell on eBay, is truly repugnant. Shame on you,
Sir.

Best regards,

Paul Martyn

Re: [meteorite-list] Scientific Value of Carancas Crater Research

2007-10-16 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, All,

The notion that an impactor survives somehow
to lurk beneath the floor of a crater is a pervasive and
common notion that seems to have "the power to
cloud men's minds" and keep them digging and drilling.
Daniel Moreau Barringer, owner of the Meteor Crater,
exhausted his life on the crusade to "mine" the meteorite,
drilling as deep as 1400 feet into the floor of the crater.

A piece on the remarkable drilling efforts
Barringer undertook in the crater, by James Tobin:
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~afs/feb97_1.html
"The work at the Arizona crater would continue
for more than two decades, even beyond Barringer's
death in 1929. But, even by the time of his 1909 paper
there had already been 28 holes drilled into the floor of
the crater. Fourteen of these revealed nickel iron oxide
material at various depths below 450 feet. At the same
time the numbered shafts at the crater had already reached
into the forties. Add to this the dozens of trenches
and pits being dug almost constantly into the ejecta
blanket and this becomes a staggering project."
It's a long and fascinating article.

Tobin himself is convinced that some meteoritic masses
remain below the crater floor. In another fascinating article:
http://www.meteorite-times.com/Back_Links/2005/February/Jims_Fragments.htm
"...it is clear only a few percent of the original mass
remains. Most of the asteroid was indeed vaporized,
later condensing to form the billions of small spheres
found in the soil around the crater. Barringer and Tilghman
knew about the spheres from the beginning of their
work. But, thought them to be tiny droplets that streamed
from the burning asteroid as it plunged through the
atmosphere. Even as evidence mounted that the asteroid
could not have survived intact, Barringer found ways
to think it was there."

In 1938, even Time magazine had an opinion on the
formation of Meteor Crater! Here's a fascinating look at how
little was known of craters, meteorites, and impacts back then:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,931100,00.html
Here's what they thought the mechanism of crater
formation was: "the monstrous cluster [of meteors]
plunged into the desert, converted underground water
into steam, hurled huge gobs of earth and stone skyward
to fall back into the crater." This in an article about
investors that were still scheming to recover the "millions
of tons" of precious meteorite buried under the crater.

Yes, that may "unfortunately" be right. Much or most of it
may have been vaporized or been reduced to dust and what
has been collected may be comparable to what has been found
around Barringer Crater (Coone Butte) where any search for
the main mass down in the crater has so far remained futile!

.. sayeth Bernd who meanwhile owns two small but
representative pieces of that noteworthy meteorite ;-)

Figure 14. Ubinas eruptions in May 2006 ejected
volcanic bombs, seen here in their impact craters. A
2-m-diameter bomb (top), struck ~ 200 m from the
crater. A crater containing a large, partly buried,
smooth-faced bomb is seen in the bottom photo.
Numerous bucket-sized angular blocks appear on the far
side of the impact crater. Two geologists stand
adjacent a ~ 2-m-long block that ended up on the
impact crater's rim. The bomb fragments were of
andesitic composition. Top photo from Salazar and

Re: [meteorite-list] Peru Again!! Ubinas, Peru volcanic bomb block crater- Smithsonian Institution-INGEMMETstudy

2007-10-16 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Dirk, List,

The picture of the 2-meter "bomb" shows there
no distinction between an impact pit (which is what
this is) and a true crater, formed by an explosion.
The shape (but not the size) is the same for both.
The object's mass is up to 10 tons, but the velocity
was low, probably no more than 100 m/sec (depends
on how high it was tossed out of the volacano). A
"pit" is a low-energy event; a crater is not, but the
shape's the same.

The geometry of the pit or crater is very close
to that perfect conical shape of the mathematical
crater models with their 3:1 width-to-depth. But since
it's the energy that determines the crater, you could
have gotten the same crater that was produced by
ten tons at 100 m/sec with 100 kilos at 1000 m/sec,
or 1 kilo at 10,000 m/sec.

It's a picture like this that demonstrates the true
silliness of the idea that a "ten-ton monster" is hiding
in the Carancas crater. The URL's a picture of a
ten-meter crater (OK, pit) with a ten ton impactor
sitting in it. Does it look to you like it's hiding? I think
we'd have noticed a ten-monster in Carancas... if it
was intact!

[meteorite-list] the mali meteorite

2007-10-16 Thread steve arnold
Well with all the discussion going on about this new
meteorite,it is nice to see the ball rolling
finally. It was stated that it takes time to classify a
meteorite? Most of the time it is true. But I remember
park forest being classified in less than 2 months. But
with all these kilo's arriving on everyones door step
worldwide,it will be interesting to see what it really
is.Like I saw in an earlier post,I guess at Munich
alot will be cleared up about this new fall.I also
decided to save my pennies on this till we know
more. After great advice from many listee's (and
thanks).I decided to buy a 286 gram sikote-alin from
jim strope instead.By far the best SA'S out
there. Thanks again jim on a great deal. But once the
smoke clears,I look forward on getting a piece of this
new stone.

Hi Sterling and List,
Sterling has hit the nail exactly on the head! No or
little impactor was left in the crater. They will
still finishing messing up the Carancas impact crater
anyway or the rain will finish it off, either way it
is likely gone
Happy always to read your posts. I was lucky to
just find these photos tonight while searching for HE
bomb craters in Osaka.
No satellite imagery data has been located of the
Carancas impact crater following the event, too bad.

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Farmer
If you had any clue as to the horrible emails this guy
was sending me, you would not get involved with this
crackpot.
I have received more than 10 to 15 emails per day for
the last two weeks, either threats, insults, or
invites to be his friend and work with him. There are
definitely some screws loose up there.

[meteorite-list] Carancas vs. Canyon Diablo?

2007-10-16 Thread Rob Matson
Hi Sterling,

I am little perplexed why you persist in comparing the Peru
event to Meteor[ite] Crater, when the two events share very
little in common other than an extraterrestrial origin. The
energies involved are many orders of magnitude apart; without
pulling out a hand calculator I would guess that Park Forest
was a closer match to Carancas than Canyon Diablo.

For me, there is nothing about the dimensions of the impact
pit (I refuse to call it a crater) that precludes a significant
mass of meteoritic material buried within. Yes, this mass is
likely in many pieces, but I don't see how the collective can
avoid weighing less than a metric ton.

You seem to believe that hitting the ground was somehow more
stressful to this meteoroid than hitting the upper atmosphere.
If so, that would be a first.

Best wishes,
Rob
