Re: [meteorite-list] another new argentina fall??

2008-04-19 Thread mexicodoug

I wrote:

So far there are two institutions who want to analyze the meteorite. I
think they are:

* Centro Austral de Investigaciones Científicas, CONICET, Argentina
* Another University group in Spain

Just to confirm, that is the correct Argentine group, and the Spanish
hoping to convince the Astronomical Association to send samples for
analysis is:

Instituto de Ciencias del Espacio (CSIC), Barcelona, Spain

I mentioned that a famous Uruguayan astronomer ad Solar System
dynamicist, Gonzalo Tancredi, [in quotes because he is conqueror of the
King of the underworld himself, Pluto - no disrespect intended, but I
am ignorant of his positive contributions to real science, which I
would need to know to remove the quotes], now wants to go on an
expedition and probably wants material for scientific purposes. He
pasionately led the successful charge withn the IAU to kick Pluto out
of the Planet Club.

I should have added that some of his motivation is because he is
working on some theory that this new April 6 fall is part of a
recurring meteorite shower, and he references a 1959 Czech fall
(Obviously the H5 Pribram, 7 April 1959 for which an orbit was
determined) and a -18 magnitude 2002 Bavarian-Austrian bolide from 6
April 2002 (Type Classified as H5 at the time, though no specimens had
been recovered, by some astronomers based on a similarity of the bolide
to Pribram, with the argument that the orbit was determined precisely
also and was so similar to Pribram)...but then:

Whether you want to take this seriously or think statistics (remember
the Birthday Problem?) would argue otherwise, this is actually the
theory of Halliday, et. al. and others who have investigated the idea,
for example:

NEUSCHWANSTEIN AND PRIBRAM: SOLITAIRE METEORITES OR MEMBERS OF A STREAM?
Geophysical Research Abstracts, Vol. 5, 11512, 2003
(where D. Heinlein was the third author)
[the conclusion of the latter was that Neuschwanstein, the Bavarian
(German) meteorite had a sufficiently indistinguishable orbit so that
it could be considered the same a member of the same meteoroid stream.
Sadly for proponents, Neuschwanstein was classified as an EL6 in the
Meteoritical Bulletin, after being recovered finally, so luckily the
idea to bolide it as an H5, too ;), lost the earth under it. The idea
that there is an April 6-7 meteoroid stream, though, is apparently
alive and kicking.]

Also:
* the Berduc meteorite looks like a relatively friable chondrite with a
gray matrix.
* the Berduc meteorite witnesses thought it was coming from the
Southwest (~225 degrees Azimuth) and heading towards the Northeast (~45
degrees azimuth)with Berduc being nearly the furthest NE along this
line.
* Other astronomers mention that Tancredi called Neuschwanstein
Austrian. While we might frown upon this, in his defense, the view was
quite
impressive from Austria where observations were taken, as it turns
out, just like Berduc from Uruguay...

Best wishes and great Health,
Doug

Hi Sonny, Not that much more news other than I already posted unless
this is of help. It is a very large fall though only small fragments
are being reported:

* These are the approximate coordinates of the 700 gram piece reported
by the Agricultural Engineer Gabriela from the Nursury. Sorry if they
are off by a couple of meters:

31 Degrees 54'38.68 South
58 Degrees 19'50.76 West

* It is clear that hundreds (more like many thousands) of pieces fell
in the surrounding population of Berduc in the Entre Rios municipality.
Several in Berduc (hundreds of meters from the Nursury where the
largest piece was found) complained of their roofs being pelted with
a hail of tiny black rocks.

* One residence in Berduc spoke about their experience (her name was
withheld by the report), I'll paraphrase the woman who had about 25
grams of fragments with fusion crust, for you:

We felt an illumination and it surprised us, but, we didn't pay that
much attention, it might have been a car to it and kept watching
television.

But the thing is, a little while later, we felt the piece [hit]. I
would say um, one... right away...I'd say about five minutes just after
the illumination; we looked out the windows and we didn't see any
clouds, no lights, no vehicles, nothing.

Like who would throw rocks? We went outside and turned on the outside
light. Well, we didn't want to go outside, we stayed inside, one always
avoids doing that at night. We thought was was that? but we stayed
inside well, kept watching television and we were there along while.
Then we left it like that, we didn't hear anything else, we did nothing
but we were left with that thought- what could that have been?

Well today in the morning right when we got up,

[meteorite-list] Meteoritical Society Membership

2008-04-19 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi List!

I have a quick question about Meteoritical Society
membership. I forked over my $110 to join back on
April
6th or 7th, and I got my confirmation email from them
on April 8th. I haven't heard anything since then.
I emailed the person responsible for membership issues
a few days ago, but have heard nothing.

Does it usually take this long to process a
membership?

I'm eager to get access to the online journal and
start
doing some serious reading up. I've already consumed
every meteorite book I could find, so I'm chomping at
the bit for the MS to process me.

Am I just being impatient?

It has only been a few days, so yes you are :-)

I would imagine some graduate student somewhere is working on it and well,
having been a graduate student myself

In my case, when I sent my check a few years back, It was nearly a year and
only after several emails did I my membership actually become official.

Hope your case doesn't turn into my case :-(

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteoritical Society Membership

2008-04-19 Thread Norbert Classen
Hi Mike M., Hi Mike T., and All,

Oups, now I hope that you didn't get my email wrong - I actually enjoy MPS
(Meteorites and Planetary Science) more than any other publication, and I'm
sure Bernd and Walter are feeling the same. Each and every issue is like a
high-class book on meteorites, and related subjects. Sure, these are
scientific articles, and I don't get everything what is written in there.
But it's the very best publication out there, and it's just a bit sad that
MPS is some issues behind, right now (and that's not allways the case!).
Now imagine, 12 great books on meteorites and planetary science each year,
plus some specials - that's not that bad for their modest annual dues, if
you ask me!

Mike T.: you will have to wait one full year until the most recent MPS
articles are freely accessible online. If you think that this is a
reasonable timeframe you're surely not as impatient as I am ,-))

Mike M.: Besides the subscription of MPS which is included in the annual
dues for Meteoritical Society membership there are quite a few other reasons
why you might want to join. The MetSoc is responsible for naming meteorites,
and for publishing the Meteoritical Bulletin, for example, something we
really all should be supporting if it's within our budgets. Actually, what
would our hobby be without the very existence of the Meteoritical Society?
It's the science which makes meteorites interesting - without that science
they would be just, ehm, ordinary rocks that have fallen from the sky, and
we hardly couldn't tell a lunar from a HED, or a chondrite from a desert
varnished wrong...

Some good reasons to consider joining and supporting the Meteoritical
Society, right?

All the best,
Norbert (Member of the Meteoritical Society since 2006)

Hello Mike,

The Meteoritical Society is the society founded by Nininger and Leonard
and publishes scientific journals, including as a footnote, the
Meteoritical Bulletin. The MB is where meteorite classifications are
approved by the Nomenclature committee of the Meteoritical Society. The
former head of the NomCom is on the list (Dr. Grossman), and many list
members are also members of the Met Soc.

The benefits of joining? You get MAPS, the journal of Meteoritics and
reduces rates on another.

As for 'representatives' on the list, well some are here,

check out their website on www.meteoriticalsociety.org and you can see
who ...

Hi Folks,

I was just being impatient it seems! :)

I got my confirmation and membership number today! :)

One word describes how I feel right now - GEEKJOY!

LOL!

Aaaahh, now I get to dive in (completely over my
head),
into the harder science of meteoritics!

(If I'm not back in 6 months, call out the National
Guard to look for me!)

After reading some of the quaint theories present in
the dated (but wonderful) Out of the Sky by
Nininger,
I am thirsty for some newer and more sound theory.

For example, one of the theories presented in Out of
the Sky (not Nininger's theory, he was merely
reporting it),
is that the craters on the moon were not formed from
meteorite impacts, but from gas bubbles escaping from
below the lunar surface, and the craters are
solidified
remains of the bursting bubbles - left in a
plastic-like
surface that has since hardened! ;)

Hello Mike,
The Meteoritical Society is the society founded by Nininger and Leonard
and publishes scientific journals, including as a footnote, the
Meteoritical Bulletin.

As for 'representatives' on the list, well some are here,
check out their website on www.meteoriticalsociety.org and you can see who
...

Best wishes, Doug

[meteorite-list] Call for Articles for the August issue of Meteorite magazine

2008-04-19 Thread lebofsky
Hello Again:

Thank you to everyone who responded to our question about the Meteorite
magazine DVD. I have responded to a few of you, but owe many others
personal responses. We are hoping to get to work on this over the summer
when our copy person, Richard, is out of school and has more free time.

We are just finishing the proofs of the May issue of Meteorite and that
means we are starting to compile our list of authors for the August issue.
However, we still need more articles!

A number of you have promised articles, so it is now time to uphold your
promises. Our deadline is May 19, just a month away.

If this is too soon, there is always mid-August for the November issue!
Just let us know.

As we said in our last Call, articles should be on the order of 1,000 to
2,500 words (longer ones may end up as 2-parters) with 4 or 5 pictures.
Also, don't forget, if you have read a relatively new (less than about 2
years old) book, think about writing a review article about it.

Thank you for your continued support of YOUR magazine.

[meteorite-list] Scientists Participation on the List

2008-04-19 Thread Walter Branch

Hello Everyone,

I have noticed that recently, we seem to be getting an increase in posts
from meteoriticists, the scientists who study and provide us with
information about these rocks we love so much. In fact, I can't remember a
time, perhaps many years ago, when scientists participation in list
discussions was greater.

I would like to say thank-you to those scientists who have contributed to
list discussions. I am sure (at least on this issue) that I can safely
speak for us non-scientists list members when I say we really appreciate
your contributions here on the meteorite central list server.

Hope to see more (gentle nudge) posts from the scientists in the future!
