Re: [meteorite-list] OT: RISKS OF NUCLEAR POWER
This reminds me of the irrational fears people have over the "body scan" when going through airport security. The amount of harmful non-ionizing radiation from the scanner is significantly less than the radiation from their upcoming flight. According to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP), the exposure from the 40mm wavelength scanners is approximately equal to 2 minutes of high altitude flight. Re: [meteorite-list] "Great News" to eBay sellers.
There is probably a reason for this. I have seen sellers listing multiple items using "Buy It Now" for, say, $.99 .. and then charging $50 for shipping. That way the final value fees for the seller are greatly reduced. So, I guess eBay got fed up with these loop-hole tactics, as if eBay/Paypal Inc. doesn't make enough annual revenue anyhow. So.. sellers, especially those that charge actual shipping and ship heavy items, will suffer the most as a result of this policy change. This is so classic...additional fees within any third-party exchange ultimately limits the exchange itself (excuse me for my OT comment here, but this is also the model in statist taxation...sorry, but I couldn't resist...it is directly parallel.) Ultimately, the 'law' of un-intended consequenses will come home to roost, and eBay will recognize the impact, or not. Re: [meteorite-list] "Great News" to eBay sellers.
No matter what, eBay will always find a way to take more money from the deal. I charge exactly what it cost to ship meaning I lose due to PayPal fees. Now eBay wants a chunk. This is getting ridiculous. Buyers complain every time the post office raises their fees and this is reflected in the points system. EBay wants you to use their shipping but they cannot handle international. They are not happy unless they change the system every month. They make it sound like great news but it always seems to end up costing the seller more. The scheme, which has been named the "All-sky Fireball Network" will allow researchers to triangulate observations of space rocks to try and figure out where they're going to land, making them easier to recover. It's entirely automated -- computers scan the images received to try and work out which objects are meteors, and then send any positive results to Nasa, which puts them on the web. The network currently consists of just three cameras -- in the US states of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Nasa's William Cooke, head of the agency's Meteoroid Environment Office, hopes to expand that to 15 cameras across the eastern half of the US, and is talking to schools, planetariums and science centres to host them. "If someone calls me and asks 'What was that?' I'll be able to tell them," he told Singularity Hub. Other meteorite monitoring systems exist, particularly over the less-populated western half of the US, but the Fireball Network is the first that's completely automated, using optical recognition technology to identify the flaming signature of a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere (or the occasional spider). Eventually, it's hoped that the various meteor-monitoring networks could link up to cover the whole country. It's not a warning system -- once a meteor is detected it'll likely be too late to alert any nearby residents. But data from the Fireball Network will be used to improve the shielding used on spacecraft, as well as being kept as a record of every large meteoroid to burn up over the US. It'll also help researchers track more of them down. One of Cooke's assistants told Nasa's Science News: "Most meteorites fall in the ocean, lakes, forests, farmer's fields, or the Antarctic…and the majority of those meteorites will never be found. But our system will help us track down more of them." __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

But our system will help us track down more of them." __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] OT- TEPCO Press Release
Excellent post. It's about time the qualified professionals at TEPCO released a verifiable synopsis of what actually happened at the Fukushima installation. They included a quantitive report for their complete system. Those buttheads in the media and the anti-nukers will still demagogue this incident for their own self interest. But, the fact remainsthe operators and the plants performed magnificently under the most severe physical circumstances that could be imagined. Now, maybe the press will turn its attention to the horrendous loss of life and property caused by the real dangersearthquake and tsunami. You are a character Ryan, you sent me a different email after you took out the part about saying you have my address and you saying you were glad you saved it. Then you are saying that I am editing and forging emails. No, no, no Ryan Pawelski, you removed your text, but I already responded to your comment about having my address. This is what I responded to earlier, where I asked you, Ryan ,"Is that a threat?" , so then you take that portion out and send it to the Met List. It would be best if you stop writing me and stop writing the list and you should have just kept your fingers off the keys and minded your own business and then you wouldn't have gotten into this discussion, now would you. -Original Message- From: Brian Cox Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 1:28 PM To: Meteorite-list Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: 8.9 Quake in Japan, 10 meter Tsunami,Hope Dirk and others are ok (I asked you here Ryan) Is that a threat?? [meteorite-list] MESSENGER On Autopilot for Orbit Insertion
http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/news_room/details.php?id=160 MESSENGER Mission News March 16, 2011 MESSENGER On Autopilot for Orbit Insertion MESSENGER is now on autopilot, faithfully executing a detailed set of instructions required to achieve its historic rendezvous with Mercury tomorrow night. At 8 a.m. Tuesday, all attitude re-orientations planned to control the probe's momentum accumulation and adjust its trajectory were successfully completed. MESSENGER turned to point its high-gain antenna back to Earth for the final stretch of continuous data monitoring until just before the start of Mercury orbit insertion. The operations team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), in Laurel, Md., has monitored on-board commanded vehicle re-configurations and has sent pre-defined ground commands to establish configurations for the burn. The science instrument suite has recorded the last set of data for the cruise portion of the mission, and all instruments have been turned off. Although not in an operational mode, the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer has been left in its stand-by mode to ensure thermal stability of the delicate cryogenic cooler. The instruments will be tuned back on as part of orbital commissioning beginning on March 23. "The navigation team is reporting that there has been little change from the previous targeting estimates, so the spacecraft is on the glide-slope for final approach to Mercury," says MESSENGER Systems Engineer Eric Finnegan. MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) is a NASA-sponsored scientific investigation of the planet Mercury and the first space mission designed to orbit the planet closest to the Sun. The MESSENGER spacecraft launched on August 3, 2004, and after flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury will start a yearlong study of its target planet in March 2011. Dr. Sean C. Solomon, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, leads the mission as Principal Investigator. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory built and operates the MESSENGER spacecraft and manages this Discovery-class mission for NASA. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

The GNP is large enough for a 4% flat sales tax on all stock market sales to increase government income. Slow future speculation. Eliminate income tax. Cut costs for the IRS. And put money back in the pockets of the lower classes. To stimulate growth in our economy. As an additional note for the homophobes out there. I've had friends and a relative that worked for Faux and I know that each morning they are given "Talk Points" and told to try to stay on point to try and grind down the viewers into believing every bit of yellow journalism they can spew out. There's a reason that most intelligent people call it the "Unfair and Unbalanced network" and also call it "Faux Noise Channel" and "FUX noise" it's a worthless cesspool of right-wing conservative propaganda written to rot the minds of those that are transfixed by the smell of imbeciles like bill O'Really, sean hannity and glen becKKK. Thank you Dr. Ryan of Falling Fusion, but I beg to differ since you are the one that wrote to me and started on your diatribe about disliking my politics. So, in typical republican fashion you have twisted the truth all around to fit it so that you make yourself sound better. See, Faux Noise has taught you something. Let's see who believes me and who believes you, since if you want to play this game. I'm all up for it! Good afternoon Brian, Folks, Brian, your politically oriented diatribe is entirely inappropriate for posting to the Met list, is disrespectful to those who may have equally legitimate, differing opinions, and shows both your ignorance and your intransigent character. Your First Amendment argument is perhaps better suited for the courtroom, next time someone sues you for defamation. Paul Martyn, Savannah, GA In a message dated 3/16/2011 12:24:51 P.M. [meteorite-list] (AD) Way Off Topic...I'm selling Gold Nuggets on Ebay
Well...this is way off topic, but since this is my very first AD of any kind to this list, I think I'm good for one shot here considering all the other abuses. :O) I just want to say that I began a couple weeks ago selling off my natural gold nugget collection on ebay. My seller name is "deanazay" . I'm selling 4 nuggets each weekend. Sorry, but I'm selling only to people in the USA. The history of the nuggets I'm selling...I bought these nuggets off of ebay 4 or 5 years ago, using the money I got after selling the fine gold I dredged up in the Yuba Rivers in northern California. Its a lot easier to sell natural nuggets than the melted down bullion I made from the fine stuff. I bought gold nuggets from all over...California, Nevada, Idaho, Georgia, Alaska and Australia primarily. I've acquired sizes from 1 gram up to 8 grams. Got some river worn nuggets as well as nice cryatalline nuggets. I'll probably be selling nuggets for the next couple months at least. Have a looksy if interested. Thanks. http://shop.ebay.com/deanazay/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 George Zay __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

At 5:17 pm, while the water level in the reactor reached the top of the fuel rod, we have restarted the water injection with the valve operation. At approximately 6:14 am, March 15th, the extraordinary sound was confirmed near the suppression chamber and the pressure inside the chamber decreased afterwards. It was determined that there is a possibility that something extraordinary happened in the suppression chamber. While sea water injection to the reactor continued, TEPCO employees and workers from other companies not in charge of injection work started tentative evacuation to a safe location. Sea water injection to the reactor is still under operation. *Unit 3 At 6:50 am, March 14th, while water injection to the reactor was under operation, the pressure in the reactor containment vessel increased to 530 kPa. As a result, at 7:44 am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 occurred (abnormal increase of the pressure of reactor containment vessel). Afterwards, the pressure has gradually decreased (as of 9:05 am, 450 kPa). At approximately 11:01 am, March 14th, an explosion followed by white smoke occurred near Unit 3. 4 TEPCO employees and 3 workers from other companies (all of them are conscious) have sustained injuries and they were already dispatched to the hospital by ambulances. *Unit 4 At approximately 6:00 am, March 15th, an explosive sound occurred and the damage in the 5th floor roof of Unit 4 reactor building was confirmed. At 9:38 am, the fire near the north-west part of 4th floor of Unit 4 reactor building was confirmed. At approximately 11:00 am, TEPCO employee confirmed that the fire was off. At approximately 5:45 am, a TEPCO employee discovered a fire at the northwest corner of the Nuclear Reactor Building. TEPCO immediately reported this incident to the fire department and the local government and prepared to extinguish the fire. However, during an inspection at approximately 6:15 am, TEPCO staff found no signs of fire. Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station: Units 1 to 4: shutdown due to earthquake *The national government has instructed evacuation for those local residents within 10km radius of the periphery. *As the radiation dose at the site boundary exceeded the limitation, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 occurred (Extraordinary increase of radiation dose at site boundary) at 9:58 pm, March 14th and at 0:00 am, March 15th. *Reactor cooling function was restored and cooling of rectors was conducted. As a result, all reactors achieved cold shutdown: Unit 1 at 5:00 pm, March 14th, Unit 2 at 6:00 pm, March 14th, Unit 3 at 0:15 pm, March 12th, Unit 4 at 7:15 am, March 15th. * (Unit 1) As it is confirmed that the temperature of the Emergency Equipment Cooling Water System *1 has increased, at 3:20 pm, March 15th, we stopped the Residual Heat Removal System (B) for the inspection. Subsequently, failure was detected in the power supply facility associated with the pumps of the Emergency Equipment Cooling Water System. At 4:25 pm, March 15th, after replacing the power facility, the pumps and the Residual Heat Removal System (B) have been reactivated. * (Unit 4) As it is confirmed that the pressure at the outlet of the pumps of the Emergency Equipment Cooling Water System*1 has been decreased, at 8:05 pm, Ma

It also makes sense on the grounds that the label is placed on the meteorite in such a way that you can read the number more comfortably this way than turning the meteorite and reading the number the other way around... First thank you all for your nice comments. Gary, I thought the same thing but I would not trust their typewriters. You can see for example that they used the letter "I" instead of the number "1" for that specimen: http://www.thetricottetcollection.com/img/img_met/1-5_SikhoteAlin_SAS.jpg Or maybe the "8" is stretched because of the soft sticker. Moreover, it seems that all early numbers are very large masses. [meteorite-list] February issue METEORITE
Friends, a brand new February 2011 issue of METEORITE just arrived at the doorstep. ‘Good stuff’, as a friend of mine says, and excellently put together by the editors Derek Sears and Robert Beauford. Of the many brilliant and entertaining contributions I may point your attention to the article on The Remarkable and Primitive NWA 5717 by our esteemed list member Darryl Pitt. Not only does the text include a thorough description of the most intriguing lithology and petrography of this super rare type 3.05 chondrite, but also contains breathtaking macro and electron microscopy photos of the exterior and special features of this meteorite. I still haven't read the Tale of Bonita Springs H5, the 'Meteorite under the Mango Tree' by Kevin Kichinka, but looking forward to do so. Hats off to the editors and authors of this issue. Cheers Svend P.S.: Concerning the current OT-discussion I may add that my thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese people. While mourning the deaths of perhaps as much as ten thousand souls from the initial quake and subsequent tsunami, and with a previously densely populated coast now totally devastated, leaving hundred thousands homeless, it appears comprehensible that some consider the current reduction of the disaster on Fukushima in western media and politics as out of proportion. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] 8.9 Quake in Japan & ZIRCONIUM
This would all have been a mute point had the reactors been designed to separate the fuel rods by gravity in case of power loss. With cooling water fed by gravity with enough stored to last several days. Most reactors it seems use the same bad design. The water has to be pumped in. However due to this disaster it will lead to newer and safer designs. Almost ALL reactors use ZIRCONIUM as the metal for the fuel rods and other various parts for the reactors. ZIRCONIUM ignites easily and CAN NOT be put out by water. Water just feeds it and produces hydrogen & oxygen (We already know about what THAT does). I've been listen almost non-stop to FNN and CNN and I've yet to hear anyone talking about this fact. While there are a few ways to put out a zirconium fire, as long as the fuel rods themselves stay "hot" they really don't stand a lot of chance of putting the fire out. Smothering a zirconium metal fire with salt is one way to do it. The salt melts over the burning zirconium and encapsulates it. Even with a relatively small amount of zirconium, it takes a LONG time for it to smother and cool to safe levels. Personally, I'd like to hear some of the nuclear engineers speak to this on TV. FWIW- ZIRCONIUM is used by the Navy and Airforce in many incendiary bombs. It burns so hot and furious that it burns right thru the steel on heavily armored tanks and burns thru the cement used in bunkers. Zirconium is the wildcard that everyone is overlooking here. If the zirconium catches fire, it WILL melt and burn its way thru anything. Try Googleing ZIRCONIUM METAL and WESTERN ZIRCONIUM in Ogden, UT and see for yourself. It's nasty stuff when it ignites, but it's also the most corrosion resistant metal known. -Barrett __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Caused the Daytona Beach Rogue Wavein1992?
Hi Mike, Chris, List, Personally I think Chris hit the nail on the head when he said "But realistically, a 10 meter object that was moving at hypervelocity all the way to the sea, and near shore, would have produced a massive fireball, rivaling the Sun, would have left a long lasting dust debris train, and would have been witnessed by thousands of people." I'd assume that a large event like that would have also shown up all all sorts of monitoring points from satellites and/or radar to seismic stations too. Hi Chris and List, I agree. As the eyewitness account reads, it's impossible for such an object to create a large wave. However, if the account was in error about the size of the object, then perhaps it becomes a little more possible. What about the velocity of the object? Let us suppose that it retained a good bit of it's cosmic velocity when it struck the water. Would an object about 10-30 feet in diameter, travelling at a high rate of speed (say, 1km per second), generate a large wave? I would think that the speed at impact would play a role in the effects once it hit the water. I think the underwater landslide theory is more plausible. I was just surprised to see an account about a "meteorite" in this story. Hi List, All of this talk about the tsunami in Japan reminded me of an event that happened here in Florida in 1992, that may have a meteorite connection. On July 3rd, 1992, a 20-foot rogue wave appeared out of nowhere (calm weather) and washed ashore on Daytona Beach, damaging many vehicles parked along the beach and causing scores of minor injuries - thankfully there were no fatalities. This event was big news down here at the time, but has since faded into obscurity. I did some digging on the event, to satisfy my own curiosity and I came across an account that includes a possible meteorite fall. Here is a quote from an eyewitness who was a boater that was offshore at the time - "...the boater came forward with the information that, shortly before the time of the wave, he was in his boat about eight miles offshore. He watched as a distant object approached across the sky toward the ocean at a high rate of speed, and crossed the bow of his boat at an angle with a "whoosh" (his word). Shortly after, a giant swell made his 41-foot sailboat handle like a large surfboard. Various news sources state that the meteorite, as it is now being called, was anywhere from a meter to 10 feet across. The boater who wished to remain anonymous, gave the professors enough information so that they are hoping that the Navy will retrieve the object, which is presumed to be lying in about 70 feet of water off the Daytona Beach coastline, with plenty of coordinates for locating it." (source : http://www.science-frontiers.com/sf084/sf084g12.htm ) Does anyone remember this "meteorite" event? And, did anyone look for the object? I know 70-feet of water is not exactly prime meteorite-hunting territory, but one has to wonder what happened, in light of the eyewitness account.
