Hi Stuart and list Written below the photo is that every day there are intrusion of meteorites like the one of the photo. It does not say that the photo is from the new fireball. Also mention the source as elpais.es , which is a newspaper form spain. Re: [meteorite-list] Large Fireball observed on 6MAY2010 in Argentina
Hi Actually the law refers to NEW finds and falls, so any meteorite find or found before December 2007 can be exported (with a few exceptions like Campo del Cielo as there is a provincial law that protect Chaco meteorites). About the new one, I was in contact with people from San Juan. It was seen aproaching earth with a Southeast direction near the Sierra de Pie de Palo, but no sound was hear nearby. In case of a confirmed fall in this case, it will be a new fall and so no export will be alowed right now (although I'm still working to try to change this). best regards Eduardo -Original Message- From: impact...@aol.com To: countde...@earthlink.net, drtan...@yahoo.com, meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com, meteor...@meteorobs.org Date: Thu, 6 May 2010 15:39:25 EDT Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Large Fireball observed on 6MAY2010 in Argentina Quick reminder: As of January 1, 2008, No meteorite, new fall, old fall, newly found,...etc, may be exported from Argentina. The incident occurred in the District of Fiambalá Juan Manuel Salas, department Tinogasta, located about 350 kilometers west of the provincial capital, where his neighbors say that about 22 of that day fell from the sky a ball fire followed by a luminous trail. The neighbors felt that this is a meteorite and that its size would not be larger than a soccer ball. Standard Olmedo, who lives in that area, said Ancasti told FM that he filmed with his cell phone and managed to drop to locate the stone. Olmedo, who at the time of the phenomenon was with his son, said past the 22 on Monday was struck a bright light that shone from behind. Turning I saw falling from the sky a red ball, trailing light strongly, he said. According to the woman, she arrived with her son to the place of the fall, where they discovered a stone that he still flashes. Hi A new lot of almost 100 auctions is running right now. To see them all just go to http://shop.ebay.com/smfmeteorites/m.html Nice photos so you are welcomed to see them even if you don't want to buy As usual a wide variety of meteorites. Some highlights are: COVERT. last available slice (unless you want to buy the main mass) Amerikanite - Colombianite. A nice transparent specimen. These use to be considered tektites but recently tested to be terrestrial so now they are pseudotektites Benguerir. 17.8g fragment with a large crusted area. This came from my collection specimen, It has a natural? fissure and I split it with my hands. Starting at $0.99 I can't believe it still have no bids! Kem Kem 33, another of the very limited numbered Kem Kem. this one splitted by M. Casper over 10 yeras ago, with a nice fusion crust. Both halves included in the auction. Allende, a nice 46g end piece, and also smaller specimens, your choice. Many groups, localities, falls, small, large. You will find something here. [meteorite-list] Ebay ending tomorrow. Very low prices. AD
Hi I think I never seen so low prices the day before one of my auction ends. quick link here: http://shop.ebay.com/smfmeteorites/m.html?_nkw Some extremely rare meteorites this time, only one available so this is your only chance (at least from me): Hinojal, Chajari, Palca de Aparzo, Nogoya, Cuenca del Tiburon, Cat Mountain. Last month there was a discussion about Kem Kem. One of the specimens in the auction is Kem Kem 15. Michael Casper realized that this one was different than other Kem Kem and put a different name on it. Less than 30 Kem Kem meteorites were labelled with a number and most of them are gone, so if you want have a specimen go ahead and bid, is a 47g specimen cut by half so ready to be studied and is still at $0.99!. One more hint to make a good buy here. One of the auctions that did not start at $0.99 was mistakenly priced, next time will be 50% more expensive. I will not say which one. Just find the bargain and get it. If you just want to see the photos, go ahead, and if you want to bid on any of them great!. Hi Martin and Andre That's not right. The Argentine law specifically mention NEW finds and falls. I'm not fully sure about, but due to the new legislation, where Argentinean meteorites are handled like artefacts, they aren't allowed to be exported anymore. It is hard for the Argentinean curators and scientists, but I fear, they will have to do without meteorites as consequence of the new law. Or better to say, from now on, they rather have to purchase new material, because the most cost-effective way, the swapping and trading is now blocked. Even if there shall be a possibility to acquire special permits (?), I doubt, that anyone of the main suppliers of important meteorites, not to mention the private collectors, would be willing to occupy himself with all that paperwork. I think this was also the main reason, why so few only gave meteorites on loan to Andrzej's exhibition - cause with the new Polish export prohibition, they weren't sure, whether they would get their pieces back or feared the red tape. Don't know about the actual situation in Poland - we'd love to trade meteorites with Polish museums, like I did sometimes in past and where all were happy - and now we have more amazing material than ever, but I don't know, whether that is still possible at all. Another terrifying aspect, aside the main problem of the breaking down of the number of newly recovered meteorites - how harmful improper laws created without expert knowledge are for meteorite science and the institutional and national collections. Re: [meteorite-list] Southern America museuns meteorite trades
Hi Martin Campo del Cielo is a special case. There is a provincial law from 1970 that protect all the meteorites from Chaco province. Although some part of the Campo del Cielo strewnfield (about 5%) is in Santiago del Estero province, when you get to customs you have to prove that they were collected in Santiago province before December 2008, or in Chaco province before 1970 something really hard to do. Only the very old Campo specimens already exported before 1970 are OK. About pre-dated new finds, well there is always the chance that you can be caught in the lie. Not exactly a pre-dated, but think in Berduc. Some started to sell them as Arroyo Malo and were disacredited as soon as it was published. I guess a lot of people loose money there as now they can't legally resell them and have in hands illegally exported Berduc meteorites. There are a few Argentine meteorites actually under analysis, really collected before the law (actually their analysis started before Dec. 2008) but any new old find is questionable. On the other hand, a newly found La Criolla specimen can be easily be passed as an old one from that fall. Unless somebody catch the hunter at the moment of find it is hard to prove it was not found 5 or 10 years ago. Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Kem Kem, the original generic name before NWAs, Northwest African meteorites
Hi When buying Casper's inventory there were quite a few specimens marked Kem Kem, but also some single pieces marked Kem Kem # (where # were different numbers up to about 30), most of them cut by half. So my conclusion is that most of the specimens are the original Kem Kem, but when something looked different, it was named differently by Casper. As with all meteorite finds, looking the same does not mean to be the same, but unless you want to test every rock you have to live with this. They were found around the same time of the Saharas 99xxx. I can't be sure that all of them came actually from Kem Kem area, or were transported pre-NWA. Hope this clears up a little this matter. best regards Eduardo -Original Message- From: Brian Cox searchingfor...@sbcglobal.net To: Rob Wesel r...@nakhladogmeteorites.com Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 00:49:20 -0500 Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Kem Kem, the original generic name before NWAs, Northwest African meteorites Hi Rob, Thanks for opining. Re: [meteorite-list] Speaking of illegal Meteorites...
Argentina is getting harder in meteorites too. Look at this news from 2 days ago (sorry, spanish only): http://www.unoentrerios.com.ar/noticias/nota.php?id=1841 Two Uruguayans were caugth trying to smuggler meteorites from Argentina to Uruguay. They look like Campos. I heard there is an investigation right now the selling of illegal meteorites on-line (Campo del Cielo, Berduc and Santa Lucia), including web pages and auctions. Justice here is slow, very slow, it may take years, but their files don't dissapear. Don't be surprised if we have investigators next Tucson looking for the ones being sold there. By the way, here is an article (also in spanish), made by a lawyer, about the law. page 1 http://www.astroentrerios.com.ar/site/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=160Itemid=70 page 2 http://www.astroentrerios.com.ar/site/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=160Itemid=70limit=1limitstart=1 page 3 http://www.astroentrerios.com.ar/site/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=160Itemid=70limit=1limitstart=2 Eduardo -Original Message- From: Greg Catterton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Sat, 6 Dec 2008 16:10:47 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Speaking of illegal Meteorites... I am thinking that there will be a increase in Campo prices due to the new laws. Another illegal meteorite, Berduc... It is widely available for sale on places like Ebay and a few dealers also offer it online. Not too long ago someone from the Metlist offered it in a rather discrete fashion - if anyone tried to save the video clip like I did, you know what Im talking about - it was also offered at the Bonhams auction. I honestly think that the legal status doesnt matter to most private collectors, it only really effects the dealers who would aquire it to sell it. Myself, as mainly a collector feel that nobody would come kicking in my door for owning a sample of this new canadian fall, Berduc or any other meteorite that is not aloowed to be exported... there are too many bigger issues to deal with. --- On Sat, 12/6/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] Speaking of illegal Meteorites... Argentina is known to come down hard on illegal fossil dealers at Tucson recently. Is there going to be a shortage of Campos this year at Tucson since the new laws came into effect in Argentina? If so, are we going to see a huge spike in their values? I don't know how much Campo material has moved each year for the last decade or so, but it has to be a very large amount. A strong Supply has kept the prices relatively low in the near past, but if all that is all of a sudden cut off, wow... Re: [meteorite-list] Largest fall in the world?
You are missing the largest witnessed fall: Campo del Cielo. The main mass alone is largest than the tkw of Sikhote-Alin. Although pre-historic, it fell in a very populated area. It MUST had been seen by thousands of persons. Although no written documents of the fall (obviously being prehistoric), transmited legends of all the indians of the surrounding areas are consistent with this fact, mentioning falling rocks and fire from the sky. Re: [meteorite-list] Argentine Campo Investigation
Martin The problem is not just a reporter calling, is that there is a judicial process now. And the new law is not to be considered as it is about NEW FINDS AND FALLS only (December 2007). The problem here is that ALL meteorites from Chaco province (including Campo de Cielo) are protected by a provincial law since 1993. So only Campo del Cielo meteorites that left the Chaco province before 1993 can be legally sold. If justice starts investigating deeply on this there will be a real problem here for dealers and collectors Eduardo -Original Message- From: Greg Catterton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2008 18:52:01 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Argentine Campo Investigation I would not worry about it, as a US resident you are covered under US law, and if Im not mistaken the grandfather laws will cover any exports prior to the ban taking effect. Re: [meteorite-list] Argentine Campo Investigation
Norm There is about 5% of the strewn field on Santiago del Estero province. Not many samples were really recovered there. Of course the ones in my collection are from Santiago del Estero. When you export mineral specimens from Argentina you have to declare province of origin. If a dealer can not trace back a specimen to a legal export of Campo del Cielo form Santiago del Estero province (or one from chaco before 1993), the problem still remains. Maybe Eric will get out of problems saying who sells the specimens to him, but in one part of the chain someone will be in trouble. The new law now covers ALL finds from Argentina, including newly recovered campos from Santiago del Estero province. And the new law is not to be considered as it is about NEW FINDS AND FALLS only (December 2007). The problem here is that ALL meteorites from Chaco province (including Campo de Cielo) are protected by a provincial law since 1993. It did not hit a well, it was found in a hole. Just wrong translation Eduardo -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2008 15:42:26 -0400 Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] April 6, 2008 witnessed fall-clarification Addendum, Hi Listees, I got this question privately. As strictly a news messenger, here is what I think: It hit a well? Wow! Actually, the word well is probably best translated as simply a hole (which is well, a natural well). I don't think the human constructed variety, though the other fragment(s) on the roof seems to indicate heavenly target practice. Probably, the 700 g specimen made a small tunnel in the peat or wet soil of the nursury grounds impact hole of the plop in the mud type. Seems the 700 gram piece tunneled a (fore)arm's length into the ground - so probably the hole was made by the rock. But this is tentative news. It could be all wet, and the suspected meteorite probably was, too. Best wishes and Great Health, Doug == OK, but don't you wish you were the 29-year old specialist (this is the word used to describe him in the article), coordinator of the Astronomical Association there? Sorry for my terrible English:  http://www.wikio.es/ciencia/astronomia?wfid=52312711  Armed with a magnet, some flashlights, sample tubes, a GPS locator, a computer, laptop with the land's topography and celestial objects, four members of the Astronomy Association went out without much hope to comb the ground. It's a version much less Hollywoodesque of Agent Mulder of the X-Files, he laughed.  The celestial object that turned night into day last Sunday already has a name: meteorite. We're speaking of a meteoritethe size of a fist, 700 grams, in a well of a nursury in Colonia Berduc., in the Department of Colon, together with another five smaller pieces of three cm that were on the roof and in the shade The confirmation, in a completely informational report came with the excited voice of Mariano Andres Peter on the other end of the phone.  Peter is the coordinator of the Entrerriana Association of Astronomy, the entity responsible for the searching and finding of a heavenly body that fell Sunday night in the Argentine province of Entre Rios. It has to do with a black burnt stone and very pulverized., a rock with a very fragile makeup and iron, that reveal it to be a meteorite for its high level of magnetism, explains Peter. As well, the Entrerriana Astronomical Association will study the fragments in the llaboratory to provide a final verification.  The fragmentation of the celestial body en pieces, the enormous ground to cover, the topography of the swamplands, estuaries, and forests over which it fell make it a huge stroke of luck. We could've taken days, weeks, months or years, Peter realizes. In light of this, he considers that the find in less than 24 hours is a stroke of luck.  The description, according to this 29-year old expert, explains why the incandescent object the size of a car that the locals saw in the sky broke into pieces before arriving on the ground. It is a very fragile material that could've fragmented in hundreds of pieces in different Argentine provinces he suggests.  A judge from the municipality already has found that these meteorites- of some value in the National market- only can be used for investigation and scientific dissemination. So, the helicopters, mass media, and a group of astronomers have already bashed into the the lives of the rural residents of Villa Dominguez, Colon, and San Salvador, frightened by the very odd news.  Best wishes and Great Health, Doug         -Original Message- From: Armando Afonso [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wed, 9 Apr 2008 12:36 pm Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] April 6, 2008 witnessed fall  Not for me, Doug.  I don´t need translations, since my language is latin, too.  That thing of the allien language was a joke towards the high intelectuality of many of the specialists.:-)  Armando Afonso (no L, please)    - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]  To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com  Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2008 6:07 PM  Subject: [meteorite-list] April 6, 2008 witnessed fall    Hi Listees,    No one mentioned this?    Apparently the meteorite that was reported and fell Sunday night in Argentina is already confirmed by several pieces. Keith and List The bad treatment of the InnSuites is not only to meteorite dealers, is to all the dealers that are not friend of the organizers. After the show, I recevied a letter telling that my reservation was cancelled, because the comission didn't like my display and specimens. I talked to some dealers and this happended to many dealers, and not only meteorite related. The show closed one of the hotels and they need the best rooms to put their friends. All the explanation of displays, quality, etc is bullshit. They ask dealers to have the contracts ready one week before the show closes, then confirm it, and then once you are not in town they send a letter by post mail (not a fast e-mail, not a phone call) kicking you off without opportunity to find a new location. I even talk with Marty Zinn the last day in Tucson and he did not mention a word about this!. After some e-mails, they offered to give me a new chance... but in the 2nd floor, which I answer absolutely NOT. Hi There is a new stamp of the Campo del Cielo meteorites. The block has a stamp of the Chaco meteorite, the main mass of Campo del Cielo. Also pictured in the block is a drawing of the Campo del Cielo Fall. The most amazing thing about this stamp is that the Chaco photo is IN 3- D!. THIS IS THE FIRST STAMP IN 3 DIMENSIONS: http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/stamp.jpg I have available some sets which include: * the block pictured above * a pair of glasses to see the 3D effect: http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/lentes.jpg * a promotional cover for the stamp: http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/folleto1.jpg http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/folleto1b.jpg * and a booklet with the history and description of Campo del Cielo as good as information of the stamp. This is very nice as some of the photos of the booklet ARE ALSO 3D http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroext1.jpg http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroext2.jpg http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroint1.jpg http://www.meteorites.com/stamp/libroint2.jpg The set is U$S 4 each+sh Shipping cost is U$S 4 for 1 to 4 sets, and $10 for 5 or more sets payment can be done by paypal: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Note that the photo and the other 3d pictures seem to be out of focus as you need the 3d glasses to see the 3 dimensional effect. Re: [meteorite-list] showing off your collections
Last February after Tucson show I was able to visit two collections: Bob Cucchiara and Jason Peter Utas. It was an amazing experience. I had a great time in both visits and I would like to thank them and their familes. Each collection is different and to see other's treasures is amazing: Bob and his hundreds of beauty specimens, Jason and Peter with their amazing big Irons and their Californians dry lakes discoveries. I also visited Matt Morgan and Oscar Turone homes in the past and I hope to have the chance to see more collections in the future. About my own collection, I had several visitors, including some well known meteorite friends as Sabine Valange and Zelimir Gabelica. Of course anyone that came down here (Buenos Aires) is invited to see it. Re: [meteorite-list] What else do you collect?
I started collecting stamps and seashells when I was a small kid. Then when I was 12 a friend of my father (a micromounter of minerals) gave me my first fossils and minerals. I was amazed with the fossil seashells and ammonites, as one of my most loved seashells were the nautilus. For several years fossils were my main interest, then I turned to both minerals and fossils. I also like archeology. For the last 20 years Ive been trying to get some representative items of worldwide different cultures. And about 12 years ago I discovered the meteorites. My seashell collection is still at my parents house, but did not add anything in the last 25 years. Stamps collecting was dropped several years ago (except for some related with minerals, fossils, meteorites and mineral collecting/deposits/mining I like). I have a cabinet with about 300 archealogy pieces (rarely add something new here). And now my three main collecting areas are: Minerals, Fossils and Meteorites Lets start with Minerals: I have over 11000 Micromounts with about 2500 different species, a fluorescent collection of 300 specimens with over 150 different minerals, and another 2000 specimens displayed in 12 cabinets including one with about 150 different pseudomorphs. I especially like Sulfides, Fluorites and the Phosphate / Arseniante / Vanadate group. About fossils, I have 7 cabinets with over 600 fossils, and lots of drawers, totaling about 1500 more fossil remains, especially cephalopods (amonites, nautilus, etc). And finally my most recent collection: Meteorites. In the beginning they were included in my mineral collection, and about 6 years ago I start building a separated collection which now consist of about 340 meteorites, with over 300 different ones including 100 different falls and 100 different not sahara/dag/nwa finds. I have them in 3 cabinets in a humidity controlled room. Eduardo -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary K. Re: [meteorite-list] Unbelievably late package - my story
Walter Sorry to hear that I was at Denver on 9/11, and had to ship 5 boxes with stones (up to 20kg each) back to Argentina. I was afraid that they will be lost, but fortunately all arrived safe, even more, they were some of the faster shipments I had. They took about 3 weeks for a surface shipment. Normally takes 1.5 monthes to a record of 5 monthes to arrive. This record one arrived 2 monthes after I made a claim, so it seems it was delayed in some of the post offices and when the claim arrived to that office the box was found and sent. Re: AW: [meteorite-list] Elementary school presentation tips?
I gave a lecture for my kids school (also at age 8). I started with a nightime story, a kid going to bed, then suddenly in the middle of the night a crash sound, breaking noises and when he turned the light off his room window and ceiling was broken (you have to put some suspense telling it). Then tell the story is true, it happened a couple of years ago in Park forest. Kids loved this starting and start go put a lot of attention (at least in the next minutes) Don't forget to mention mars and the moon meteorites (if you can show them theese meteorites much better). A video of Peekskill (or another fall) is a good idea. If you have a pallasite slice don't forget to bring it (in a membrane box it is safe). Girls love gems from space. And of course, the theories of life caming from space with carbonaceous meteorites, and especially the mass death of the dinosaurs are highlights that can't be missed. At that age kids love to discover things, so they will like anything new. good luck Eduardo -Original Message- From: Dave Mouat [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Martin Altmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 09:46:01 -0800 Subject: Re: AW: [meteorite-list] Elementary school presentation tips? Dear Gary and fellow Listees There has been a lot said about the topic of presenting to young kids. Humor, imagination, enthusiasm, the right level (not over their heads but not under either), good speaking skills (if you're concerned about this part, write notes and practice with someone). Martin's suggestion of giving them little specimens is a good one. Years ago, I offered to talk about comets and meteorites/meteors to a 4th grade class. A certain ex-dealer sold me about 25 small Gibeons for a really good price. I put them in little glass jars (10 or 20 ml), handed them out. I brought some large irons with a window polished and etched, a large chondrite, a large slice of Albin. The 4th grade class went nuts, however, when I made the comet (dry ice, water, syrup, dirt). Placed the pyrex jar in front of a fan, made sure the kids were more or less behind the comet, poured warm water into the mixture. Have a good time with this!! Dave Martin Altmann wrote: 5. Gary: I have been doing this with kids from elementary school up through college for some time. Everyone does this differently since we all have different backgrounds and expertise. Don't be afraid to say that you do not know the answer. This is better than giving them bad information. I am an asteroid scientist so I know a lot (but not everything) about asteroids and a lot less about meteorites. That is a part of why we do what we do: to learn more. 1. Keep it fairly simple (but be prepared for some good questions). You might start out by asking them simple questions about what is in the Solar System. Good chance to feel them out. At this age they may know about Cassini and other recent missions or they might not know there are nine (or 10) planets. 2. Make connections: show pictures of asteroids and meteors. Explain asteroid, meteoroid, meteor, meteorite. 3. LET THEM HOLD THE STUFF (if not too fragile or valuable). If you have an iron (best because it is different), hand it around with an equal-sized meteorwrong. It makes a point. Most other meteorites look like rocks so it is difficult for young kids to relate to these coming from space. 4. Have fun, get excited: you may get a few converts to science (or at least an interest in meteorites). Hope this helps. Larry Quoting Gary K. Re: [meteorite-list] Term Main Mass +add
I made some internet search and found the following definition of main mass at http://www.meteoritekit.com/glossary/ Main Mass The Main Mass refers to the total pre-atmospheric mass of a meteoroid or the largest known fragment of a meteorite. thats the strangest definiton of main mass I ever read! In my opinion, the main mass is the largest fragment or piece collected after a fall/found of a specific meteorite fall. If you cut it, each of the fragments came from the main mass, and the largest of them is now the main mass... unless a the 2nd larger specimen of that fall/find is larger than all of the fragments, then the main mass is gone forever. So the main mass is the largest fragment of the largest specimen collected if it's still the largest known piece of that fall/find. Going now to desert meteorites, if you are 100% sure that two specimens came from the same strewnfield, and they are paired, then only one of them should have a main mass. In paired DAG's, for example, where you know where they were collected, only one of the pieces should be the main mass (so, several DAG numbers, one main mass). In most of the NWA, as they are bought from nomades this is almost impossible to be told, so each NWA number have it's own main mass. Of course the meaning for a collector of having a main mass from a NWA and one from other locality is not the same. This year I was able to obtain the first main mass from a Fall in my collection (according to my definition). It was a 1.4kg specimen of Arbol Solo, fall on 1954, Sept 11. The TKW until last year was 899g. Now it went to 2.3kg. Now the add, I will have a few specimens taken from the main mass at Tucson. Less than 150g was cut and no more will be cut from it (preserving the main mass in my collection). Most of the rest of this meteorite is locked or lost. If you want to see them just stop at my room. Eduardo -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Date: Fri, 20 Jan 2006 07:13:13 + Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Term Main Mass Since you are collecting opinions I'll give you 2 of them, my 2 cents worth so a penny each. First the cynical one - Buyers like to own main masses, sellers like to sell things. The looser the defination of main mass the more there are to sell. Buyers are happy, sellers are happy. Second my personal defination. If a stone isn't at least 1/2 the total mass recovered from the fall it isn't a main mass. Since the total mass recovered from the fall is unknown for NWA meteorites none of them qualify. That defination eliminates 98% of the so called main masses, Norton County being one of the few qualifiers. Buyers won't like that defination because it makes main masses virtually impossible to own. Sellers won't like it because it removes a sexy selling label. But it makes it easy for me to put together sales pages. I have never owned a main mass by my defination and have therefore never listed a meteorite as a main mass at my web site. It is my personal defination which I don't expect to see adopted in the meteorite community, but it suffices for me. -- Eric Olson ELKK Meteorites http://www.star-bits.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

You have 30 days to leave feedback, but the other part can't see the feedback he received until he put his feedback or the 30 days end. So no way of retaliate. Then you can make a comment on the feedback received just as oyu can on e-bay. This system is much better than the one of e-bay. Most of the minerals listed have a cubic crystalline structure, but that does not mean that the minerals have cubic form in the meteorites. For example, when I mentioned that I found cubic crystals of magnetite in my nantan specimens, that surprised me a lot, as magnetite, although cubic have a cubic structure, usually is found as octahedrons, not cubes. I have terrestrial crystals of magnetite from over 20 locations, but cubic from only 2) Most of the minerals described in meteorites have no crystal form, they are just massive, so no CUBIC FORM. best regards Eduardo -Original Message- From: drtanuki [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com, Bernd [EMAIL PROTECTED], Harald Stehlik [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2005 10:06:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: [meteorite-list] Cubic forms of meteoritic minerals Winners Announced Pt.1 Dear List, I had many replies from members of this list. Re: [meteorite-list] OT: cubes and their history? Contest with Prize!!!
Hi Dirk and list I have in my collection two Nantan specimens with cubic crystals of Magnetite (I make an x-ray diffraction on them so I'm 100% sure) I had a 300g specimen in my collection for about 7 years, one day after about 2 years, I picked it up and it split in two!, in the fracture, almost 50% of the new surface was covered by very sharp cubic microcristals, some of them somewhat iridiscent. I gave a sample to a friend who made the XRD and confirmed it was magnetite. About 2 - 3 years ago at Tucson show a chinese dealer was selling very rusted nantan specimens, I checked em all and one of the pieces had lots of those cristals on the shale. I don't know if this count for you as they are not in the meteorite itself but in the rusted shale part. But as I consider Hoba shale, and Santa Catharina as meteorites then for me this are cubic crystals in a meteorite. List, The NBS (Nationial Bureau of Standards) US maintains the universal standard cubic centimeter as well as all standards, metric and US standards in their very precise, expensive and highly guarded collection. Most likely many other countries have their own Standards collection. The history of the use of a cube dates at least to 4000 B.C.? or earlier in Egyptian culture...in the form of dice? and building blocks; but was not only unique to their culture. Early Chinese also had their standard cube by at least 2000 B.C. The idea of the cube probably came from observing natural cubic pyrite or other minerials with a cubic habit. The first use of the cube associated with meteorites perhaps was by the Japanese in Antartica. Caveat: I may be incorrect. Quiz: Do cubic forms exist in meteorites and in which minerials? RE: [meteorite-list] Collecting Habits
Hi I have different collecting areas. One is a systematic. I try to have different types. This include varieties (i.e in diogenites a green like Tatahouine and a white like Bilanga). On this ones I prefer falls but a rare find is OK too. A second one is a private collection which includes specimens from my country (Argentina), and falls/finds related with my birthday. Of course this make some pieces to be in 2 or 3 areas, like Acapulco which is in the systematic collection but also fall in my 13th birthday. In the two above I prefer end-pieces, if possible with crusted back. A third one is meteorites with history. Examples are Morasko (find when digging in a war), Oued-el-hadjar (broken in a wedding), Winona (found in stone cist), car smashers, killers, and of course the typical historical ones like Ensisheim, L'Aigle, Siena (this one still missing in my collection), etc Finally the odd collection: I like meteorites with natural holes. I have A nice Sikhote-Aline (like many collectors have) but also a Nantan, a Henbury, a Nuevo mercurio individual (from King collection)... and a Moldavite! If you have a different one for trade let me know. (I don't collect not natural holes like the iron slices with holes made by missing troilite inclusion). Eduardo - Original Message - From: Walter Branch To: Meteorite Mailing List Sent: 10/20/2003 6:45:42 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Collecting Habits Hello Everyone, I have been thinking of the different ways to collect meteorites (e.g., type, class, location, etc.) and I was wondering if anyone would care to describe their collecting specialties or subspecialties. The reason I ask is because I have gotten interested in a sort of unusual specialty area - the find or fall consisting of a single specimen. TKW is not an issue as it would be paired with no other specimen. An image comes to my mind of a single, lonely meteorite, a common chondrite, out on the plains of the midwest US (for example) sitting there for hundreds if not thousands of years, just waiting to be found by anyone. Maybe it was looked and wondered about scores of times by many a passerby or maybe just ignored. Anyone else have this interest? I would be interested in hearing about others collecting interests.
